Should CU go to the 3-4????

If CU can land some solid DE's this cycle would CU go to a 3-4 D? I'm quite certain we would! With all this speed CU now has from the linebacker spots. Would it be too far fetched to see it this year or next? Could CU use Hypolite/Nicolas as NG's, Brace/Garee SDE, Jones/Obi/Herrod WDE? Then have Sipili,Mohler,Katoa,Burton with Major as the utility? Just a hunch here but I could also see Rippy being moved to FS w/ his size and speed too.

I was just thinking about that the other day... I don't think it would work w/ all of the spread offense trash.

No - Ron Collins, D-Coordinator. Don't remember what defensive sets he ran as DC at Cal, or whether or not he has experience with a 3-4 scheme.

Since Collins never coached at Cal, I doubt that he ran anything there.

The 3-4's strength is as a run defense. With college teams using more passing now days the 3-4 is not as popular. It is more difficult to get pressure on the QB out of the 3-4.

No. IMO, Base 3-4 schemes are really only sucessful if you have enough speed at D-Line to occasionally drop into coverage for zone blitzes. Read that sentence again and realize how screwed up that sounds.

Bring back Hank!!! I love him!

:stupid:

i think hank is a damn good DC. i was dissappionted that hawk did not keep him on staff.

that being said, i cant say that im dissappionted with the CU D the last two years given the circumstances. i do believe that keeping hank on staff would have been a wise move given the improvement the D had made under hank in his two years in boulder.

not a complaint about hawk. just a thought/wish. nothing more. nothing less. :smile2:

Oops, that should be Boise St. Not sure why I was thinking Cal.

I dunno. You can disguise your 4th rusher pretty well, get some good angles and mismatches with the o-line or rb's. Need athletic, fast linebackers. Look at what SD and Dallas have been able to do. I can't think of many college teams who employ the 3-4, though. However, it can be effective against the run and the pass.

You're probably thinking of Helfrich, Dirt. As far as Mike Hankwitz goes, he was not only a quality coach but a quality human being who cared about his players. I think the current staff is made of similar stuff but would love to see Hank back in town. Actually the 3-4 Panther defense is what McCartney brought with him from Michigan. It was what Bo ran in Ann Arbor. Requires a Beast at Noseguard two big 4 & 5 techniques and a blindside Alfred Williams type DE/LB and a Kanavis-style strong-side LB/DE. If you've got those things as well as a great Mike backer some kamikaze safeties and two lock-down corners, you've got yourself a great and intimidating D.

That's what I'm saying! CU could with Two solid NG's, Huge SDE and fast, then have a rangy player..ala Alfred, super fast LB's would scare any OL cause they'll seldom know where the 4th one's comming from! As far as CB's who doesnt need lock down, shut down corners? Our safety's are the molds of a rover sized hybreed LB/FS and then have SS with premium speed We have a KILLER "D"!!!

The 3-4 can be an awesome defense. We would need a real anchor in the middle (consume 2 blockers), a couple of DE's who play the run well, and lot's of athletic LB's. We have some of that now, and some more coming in. Not sure we have the mack-truck-in-the-middle (Goree, perhaps). Lucas plays well against the run, but how will the others do? LB's - check. CB is a work in progress.

And don't you usually run a cover-2 with a 3-4? Need safeties who can cover deep and get to the ball (Walters is fine, Dykes had his moments, young guns are still an unknown).

I dunno....maybe. Would be nice to see some hybrid sets on D, though.
