Ga. House Passes Resolution Urging NCAA to Adopt College Football Playoff System

ATLANTA (AP) -The Georgia House voted 151-9 Friday in favor of a resolution urging the NCAA to create a playoff system for college football.

"The only major sporting event without a playoff system to identify its true champion that I know of is NCAA Division 1 football," said state Rep. Quincy Murphy, D-Augusta.

Georgia was ranked fourth in the BCS entering the last week of the season, behind Missouri, West Virginia and Ohio State. When Missouri and West Virginia lost, Georgia did not rise to second behind Ohio State but dropped to fifth in the BCS. Southeastern Conference champion LSU vaulted from seventh to second.

The Bulldogs went on to rout previously undefeated Hawaii 41-10 in the Sugar Bowl.

The resolution, which now goes to the Senate, calls the BCS system "the greatest disappointment of the 2007 college football season."

"The only sensible way to determine a national champion in any sport is to develop a playoff system that allows teams to meet on the field," the resolution reads. "The fans of college football deserve a true national champion to be crowned after winning the title on the field of play and not in a popularity poll."

There has been growing momentum in Georgia for a playoff system since the Bulldogs' convincing victory over Hawaii.

Michael Adams, the president of the University of Georgia, proposed an eight-team playoff system last month to determine the NCAA's national football champion. He said the current system is "undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."

I hope this resolution is somehow binding.

Kinda whiny considering Georgia proved unable to win its own division.

Echoes of the 2001 huskers (except for the part where nebraska went to the title game, and the part where they got their butts handed to them...come to think of it, it's a terrible comparison).

They do have somewhat of a point. It was kind of funny how the BCS fell apart in the last 3 weeks of the year and they had to jump up LSU from 5th to 2nd in an attempt to get a meaningful game set up.

OSU obviously was not even close to the best team. UGa probably would have kicked their asses. USC and WVa also locked much better then teh buckeyes. We ALL would have benefited from some better games if their had been a playoff.

Was Georgia whining a few years ago when one of its biggest rivals (Auburn) got shut out of the BCS title game? No. Sour grapes.

I refuse to feel sorry for a team that didn't even win its own division.

I agree. If you can't win your own division within the conference then STFU! Not even sure they could have beaten little 'ol Kansas or Mizzou.

Whiny beyotches...

I think you should still be able to be considered for the national championship game if you don't win your own conference or even your own division of a conference, because it's very possible that the 2 best teams in the country could reside in the same division. Let's say OU and Texas each won all their games other than when they met, and there were no other 1-loss teams out there. Does that mean the loser of the RRSO shouldn't be able to play in a rematch for the national title? Of course they should be able to.

Nice scenario - I could support that if a situation such as that could arise - but UGA did not even come close to that scenario this season. I would be more sympathetic if they had played in their conference championship but they didn't - and it wasn't because they lost to the other best team in the country. Nope - Tennessee and S. Carolina don't qualify in any way shape or form for that scenario.

Yah - you can split hairs all day long but my stance remains on the fact that you should at least win your division to be considered for the National Championship. No trophies for second best and who said life was always fair. I actually applauded the system (did I just frickin' say that?) for rewarding a team like LSU who won their conference championship over rewarding a team like UGA this season.

So I say again - Georgia STFU!

Part of my urge with having a playoff will also involve having to WIN YOUR CONFERENCE to make it into the playoff... Try your division within your conference first. It's like The Red Sox winning the AL East and giving the Yankees a bye to the World Series. Quit ur b*tching Georgia, holy ****. If you want to play for the BCS title, don't get your **** owned by Tennessee.

My point is that you shouldn't necessarily be eliminated from the national championship game just because you didn't win your conference. If the 2 best teams in the country happen to be from the same conference, then let them square off for the title, even if it happens to be for the 2nd time in the same season.

Does the Georgia legislature seriously not have anything more important to do? :wtf:

:yeahthat:

How long did it take them to get the kid out of prison for getting a blow job? But when it comes to college football, God forbid we wait a month... WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE BCS!!!

And this, my friends, is the difference between CU and the SEC. And personally, I'm okay with that.

I understand... And you could have argued that LSU/GA were the best two teams, but as much as we knew what would happen... You couldn't deny OSU from the title game as the last solid 1-loss BCS team:sad1:

I agree that you had to put OSU in there based on what you just said.
