Wow - Texas Just Got A 5 Star QB Commit For 2009

Garrett Gilbert? Come on, he'll never win anything of substance with a name like that. He's like Jay Fiedler or AJ Feeley, doomed to a ceiling of mediocrity from the moment his birth certificate was inked.

Not only that but Horn fans fully expect Chris Whaley
6-3, 220, 4.45 RB from Madisonville, TX (ranked #4 best
player in the USA) to commit to Texas as well.

It's becoming obvious they fully expecting any kid they have the slightest interest in to commit to UT. If Whaley goes elsewhere, expect the Teasips to fire up the Whinery again and accuse whoever signs him of some form of cheating.

As of this moment they are undoubtedly the most pathetic fans in America. Or at least a vocal minority is doing a serious disservice to a proud program.

Don't be so sure about Chris going to Texas. We just had his older brother committ and he said that "Chris will be here with me next year"!.

right now I am starting to like texas less than *braska at least until corn looses another recruit to us then we'll have to listen to them.

They lost recruits to us this year too. They are managing to handle it without acting like 4 year olds who had their cookies taken away.

What is the world coming to when somebody is making fusker fans look sane and well adjusted, at least relatively speaking.... :wow:

Oh I am sure there will be a chit load of colleges competing for this kids committment. I do think we have somewhat of an advantage with Chris's older brother here. Besides that fact that momma Whurley loves Coach Brown's religious status and being a part of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I am looking forward to watching him play this year down here in Texas. From what I have been reading about him, he is the real deal. We'll see though....a lot can happen in a year.

I heard this from a friend of a friend, who is Garret's girlfriends best friend that the Texass coaches offered his turtle a new tank if he committed early!

Getting a QB to stay basically in the same town is not a major coup. It is not all that surprising-UT will have multiple commits by the end of the month after their first two junior days.

hmmm ??

this from the texas board (if you can believe what they print)

Speaking of the possibility of early commits, I talked with Madisonville running back Chris Whaley on Thursday night, and he said that he’s considering making a move on Sunday, particularly with Texas having missed out on Darrell Scott.

“I'm thinking about it,” Whaley said. “That increases the chances of me deciding that I want to go to Texas. I would say maybe 70 percent. I'm just not sure if I want to commit early or not,” Whaley said. (JS)

hey Husker- even though the Texas board is full of liars this doesn't look positive for your Pink Skirts-
the quote comes straight from the recruit's mouth-

Watching a Junior in HS committing to a college a year before LOI day is about as productive is pissing in the wind. In other words....early committments don't mean chit nowadays! (Grades, Injuries, Arrests, ect.)

Normally true, but Texas has a great track record of keeping in-state guys committed.

The talent in the 2009 class for the state of Texas is incredible. Plenty of teams should be able to find some quality players.

Oh living down here in Texas I have seen a TON of talent playing football, I agree with you 110%!

It seems to at Texas. They get 1/2 of their class committed before the kids' junior proms. I don't see a ton of the in-state players playing the game for too long - probably because they know there's a kid one town over that could swoop in and take their schollie.

Must be nice having that much talent in your backyard.

I was talking to an old SMU alum and he is really excited about June Jones coming there. Hell he (Coach Jones) has so much talent literally right in his back yard. (Dallas,Ft Worth, Metroplex HS players) It's going to be interesting to see how he plays in the Texas recruiting game as well.

I wonder how Jones at SMU is going to affect Baylor. Seems like his hiring will generate a lot of excitement for awhile -- plus, his conference (which is?) will be easier to make noise in that Baylor's opportunity to do so in the Big XII.

How did he do in recruiting? I know he didn't have much time, but I would like for them to be atleast respectable again.

SMU is in the Conf-USA. They signed 28 players. Jones actually didn't do that half bad considering the time frame he had to work with. I give him two years and SMU will be a contender in Conf-USA. Jones and SMU finished ranked 6th in ranking out of 12 schools. Again, not too shabby.

I remember back in the early 80's SMU was one of the big power house schools of Texas back in the "Pony Exppress" days.(Eric Dickerson/Craig James). "From 1980–1985 SMU had the winningest program in Division 1A College Football. They posted a record of 55-14-1, and finished as the #21, #7, #2, #19, and #8 in the nation". Then in 1987 SMU was hit with the "dealth penalty".
Seems like centuries ago!

DFW has some very good talent. I would not be surprised to see SMU get some of the "leftover" talent that will help them improve (TCU has been doing this for years). Missouri and Kansas got quite a few players from there over the last 3-4 years that made up the core of their teams this year. Also, Oklahoma typically pulls a lot of talent out of DFW. The one team that doesn't seem to do well in DFW for whatever reason is A&M, but Sherman has vowed to make it a priority.

I could understand if he chose UT over NU. We have a TON of RB's in the stable right now and will only graduate three of them. By my count, at this time next year they should have six already on scholarship. If he wants early playing time Tejas may be the place to go. Guess we'll see how much influence big brother has on him.
