Meh- schools can't talk about kids, so the only source for offers on the paid sites are the recruits themselves. This would not be the first time that a recruit has reported an offer that he doesn't really have.
Moreover, we know that the 3*, 5.5 RR is a "placeholder" ranking for recruits of interest that haven't been evaluated yet by Rivals staff. The 247 composite just aggregates rankings on other sites, and they didn't actually rank him on the main site.
The one thing that's "NOT A GOOD LOOK" is for Rivals in posting an article on the kid- that's pretty inexcusable. I'd be really interested to see what the article actually says.
Funny as a response to those who think that the services are "authoritative" sources on recruiting.
With thousands of high schools across the country producing prospects each year there is no way that any organization like the sites could do a real evaluation on every player. There is also no actual way that they can accurately and with certainty verify offers since the schools are not allowed to comment on offers or prospects until after the kid has signed.
Still though despite things like this the services do provide some value. Most kids who sign with schools like Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, etc. are going to end up with final evaluations that are higher but in processing huge numbers of prospects giving a 3* 5..5 on a kid if he actually has offers from two or more top schools is probably a fair placeholder.
I've always considered offer list (if reported accurately) to be a better indicator than stars anyways but they tend to go together for a reason.

But how do you rank a recruit that doesn't even have film?? I could see if there was a HUDL attached. But there was nothing.

I've always wondered about how these services actually know whether a kid received an offer from X school. I imagine it has to be solely about talking to the recruits in person and maybe a little of talking with various coaching staffs, but the main source has to be the recruits Twitter announcements. I wonder how many recruits tweet out offers that don't exist simply to get on the recruiting radar more than they are/should be.

For Rivals: The 3*, 5.5 RR "ranking" is a placeholder for recruits "of interest" (read: those with reported big time offers) until Rivals evaluates more thoroughly. Some recruits with smaller-time offers don't get the courtesy of this placeholder ranking. That's why you should never really read too much into a recruit with this ranking.
For 247: their Composite ranking is just an automated aggregater "bot" that combines rankings from all the services. It went out and found Rivals' profile and put his composite ranking up based upon just that.
I guess if there's any "aha" to be had, it's that Rivals automatically puts kids with SEC offers in with their placeholder. But again, I'd be very interested to know what the "article" had to say.

Yeah, I agree. I don't like the practice of slapping a 3* ranking on a complete unknown as a placeholder. I would think they'd be better served just leaving him unrated.
Who else remembers when Nebraska fans were fooled into thinking they had a commitment from a fake Russian named Izzy Gudenoff? (Is he good enough?) This was in the early days of the internet. 1997, give or take. If memory serves, he was supposed to be a 6' 6" 260 lbs DE who ran a 4.4.

There are kids on that post who say that they go to school with him or played against him and say he’s real. Take it for what that’s worth.
That's because the picture they used is actually Corey Stephens who plays for ASU.

What about that time that kid had a whole story done about his official to CU, but he'd never actually visited or been offered?
Read someplace that this kid has never been in trouble with the law, never even had a discipline write up in school.
Also went all last season with zero holding calls and didn't give up a sack.
