Official Spring Practices Thread

Adam (247) has a free interview DC Tyson Summers up.

Which player have you seen take the biggest jump through these 13 spring practices?
"Jalen Sami from day one to now, to me, has jumped out the most. When I came out in January, Jalen was still coming off of a knee injury. To have the emotional intelligence and toughness he is playing with, to be able to play nose and tackle and some end, I like the way he is playing. Obviously he has been blessed with some unbelievable size and a great amount of strength and explosiveness. The way he is playing right now, he is by far the player that jumps out the most."

Which player has been the most consistent in your safeties group this spring?
"That guy right there (pointing to Derrion Rakestraw), without a doubt.

And more, including color on the scheme.

Howell was asked about this in his chat. He said: I don't know at this point. The NCAA just announced some changes to the transfer rule on Friday and Dante is one who could be impacted. I asked CU, but was told they need to figure some things out first. Prior to this change, he would have had to sit out. This might allow him to play this year.

Yes, the new rule allows complete free agency for non scholarship players. There isn’t much to figure out in my opinion.

The secondary just seems like a big unknown. If Chris Miller cannot stay healthy (which is a reasonable concern right now), who is going to see the bulk of work at outside corner? Who are the starting safeties?

I had ridiculously high hopes for Miller, felt like he might be our next high draft pick CB. He had a lot of late push from big schools (ie Notre Dame) during his recruitment. After the spring game last year, walking by him you could see he put a lot of work in in the weight room. Kind of been disappointing to me a bit (albeit with lofty expectations from me) and if it's because of injuries that's understandable. Good programs below the Alabama/Ohio State/Clemson tier (who have 4-5 star 3 deep) always have a few guys make big leaps in positions of need. I'm hoping Chris Miller is that for us this season.

I hope Udoffia was just out of position with his size at CB and is a better fit at safety. He showed willingness to get physical in the run game, with good coverage skills, he just seems to not have the speed and quickness to hang with some outside WRs. Maybe putting on some good weight this summer and getting used to his role at safety he can help us a lot there. I think he's a good player, he just never was going to be a man corner on an island.

Sucks that there are a lot of "hopes" in our secondary, but I wouldn't be surprised if they both played well this year. Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if our secondary was a dumpster fire either.

Good to hear Fontenot is stepping it up this spring and is number one at the moment. Roddick seems like he is going to provide some great depth if not start this season too.
