Pro Track and Field Buffs (& current Buffs in pro races)- 2019 news and highlights (Emma Coburn 2nd at World Championships!)

As with the last couple years, thought I'd start this thread to keep up with the MANY #ForeverBuffs pro track and field stars (lead by Olympic medalists and past world champions Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn) and their progress throughout the 2019 seasons.

Best wishes to ALL the pro track and field Buffs in 2019!

This IS an Outdoor World Championships year, so assume the dates for that are THE circled ones in the top stars' calendars. (They are scheduled to be competed in (toasty***) Doha Qatar from September 28th through October 6th. ***Believe I heard, because of the anticipated heat, the marathons are scheduled to start at/ around midnight.)

Other major 2019 dates that I'd assume might be of interest, especially for the elite level athletes, include:
  • Some of the Diamond League meets (schedule - https://www.diamondleague.com/calendar/ ),
  • The U.S. Outdoor Championships from July 25th-28th.
  • IF any of the athletes decide to worry about indoor track and field, the U.S. Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 26th-28th (on Staten Island). (There is no World Indoor Championships in 2019.)
  • I'd assume it won't be much of an issue for top level competitors like Ms. Coburn and Ms. Simpson, but wanted to mention, with 2020 being an Olympic year, that I assume many hopefuls (including many #ForeverBuffs and maybe even current ones like Dani Jones) will also be looking at, starting this summer, possibly attaining 2020 U.S. Championships and Olympic Games qualifying times. (I couldn't find standards or timing yet for 2020, but for 2016 (Per http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calen...Athlete-Information/Qualifying-Standards.aspx) , looked like qualifying times for all distances under 10K could be earned starting on May 1st of the year before the Olympics. For 10K distances and above, and the multi-events (men's decathlon, women's heptathlon), marks from January 1st of the year before the Olympics could be used for qualifying.)
________________________________________________________________________________

I'm starting this thread now as Ms.'s. Simpson and Coburn are both formally opening up their 2019 indoor seasons this Saturday (Jan. 26th) in Boston at the "2019 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix". Ms. Coburn is racing in the mile (scheduled to start at 3:50 PM MT/ 5:50 PM ET), and Ms. Simpson is going up in distance to race the 5000 meters starting right after (scheduled for a 4:00 PM MT start).
(Don't believe either of them typically emphasize the indoor season much, but I believe they always run at this meet, I assume mainly because both are sponsored by New Balance.)

A few links for the Grand Prix-
Event home page - https://www.nbindoorgrandprix.com/

Event schedule (and live results as races complete) - https://www.nbindoorgrandprix.com/events-results/

Television - Per https://www.nbindoorgrandprix.com/meet-info/ , "The 2019 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix will be shown live on the NBC Sports Network from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Saturday, January 26. " (Those are, I assume Eastern Time, so coverage will be from 3:00-5:00 Mountain time.)

I've been lazy on updating this thread, but wanted to mention the seasons for the pro track and field athletes (and aspiring current Buffs) is getting serious (with the U.S. Championships only a month and a half or so away), and Buff great Jenny Simpson is about to tow the line in her biggest race of the year so far against a TOUGH field, as she's competing today in the Rome Diamond League Meet in the 1500 meters. (Live coverage on NBCSN starts at noon MT, with the 1500M scheduled for a 1:15 PM start.)

(Instagram she posted a couple days ago training on what looks like a VERY cool track -

)

Nice start to the season for Jenny Simpson, as she snags 4th place running 4:01.18. (Results available at https://rome.diamondleague.com/en/p...un#RunSubFrame#Rome2019_TIMING_ATW015101_json.)

She was smiling after the race, assume because:
  • That's a nice early season time for her.
  • She earns 5 Diamond League qualifying points in her attempt to qualify to be one of 12 finalists for the Diamond League finals.
  • Although it probably wasn't much if any concern, she also can "check the box off" regarding earning a 2020 Olympics qualifying standard time, as she easily exceeds the 4:04.20 standard time.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A couple other big upcoming dates for the elite Buffs-
(Along with the opportunity to face off against the best in the world, assume she'll also be looking to earn the Olympic Standard, or at minimum this year's World Championships standard (4:06.50 (per http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calen...Info/Standards-and-Qualifying-Guidelines.aspx). Her current PR (from last summer) is 4:07.33.)

SIAP speaking about Dani Jones, this may be one of my favorite calls of all time in any CU sport. Almost right up there with the Michigan game. If you haven't already seen this, it's worth a watch as CU started out so slowly we were hardly visible in the pack. Once Dani got going things certainly changed.

If you have no interest in the beginning of the race, skip to 1:00 left and watch her go. The announcer made this an absolute classic, and I wish there were someway to have the final call somehow played at the stadium during football games.

Love that video.

And, for those who want to watch a Dani Jones double, an ~3 minute highlight (with the same announcer) from her 3000M race the next night (back in 2017) - https://www.flotrack.org/video/5765...n-the-field-for-2nd-ncaa-title-of-the-weekend.

Holy crap!

Forgot to mention that Emma Coburn was running her 1st race of the year in her specialty event, the 3000M steeplechase, at today's Oslo Diamond League Meet. Per https://oslo.diamondleague.com/en/p...un#RunSubFrame#Oslo2019_TIMING_ATW033101_json , looks like it was a good 1st race, with everything I noted about Jenny Simpson's 1st race in post #3 also applying to Ms. Coburn's run (Good opening season time, 4th place Diamond League points, Olympic qualifying time, etc.).
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

And, speaking of Ms. Simpson, she will be racing this Sunday at the next Diamond League meet, this one in Rabat, Morocco. Per https://rabat.diamondleague.com/en/programme-results-rabat/ , looks like her 1500M race is scheduled to start 7:41 PM Rabat time, which I believe works out to 12:41 PM Mountain Time.

I can't find a live broadcast yet, but these meets are typically on one of the NBC channels. However, assume it's possible this meet may only be getting shown on NBC's premium Sports Gold stream.

That DMR call was great. I wish dude had been on the call of the 5000 this year. That guy barely mentioned who won was more concerned with 4th and 5th place

Another upcoming race featuring a Buff running great - Kara Goucher, after being a top national marathoner and, sometimes, 10000M runner, for many years, is racing in her 1st trail race in (and/ or around) Leadville this weekend.

Kara Goucher came in 5th overall among women and 1st in her age group at what sounds like a BRUTAL race yesterday in Leadville.

https://runningmagazine.ca/trail-ru...e-wins-age-group-at-leadville-trail-marathon/

And, Jenny Simpson came in 7th at the Rabat Diamond League meet held Sunday in a FAST 1500M race. She broke the 4:00 minute barrier for the 10th time, the only U.S. women's runner to ever hit double digits in that stat.

_________________________________________________________________

As I've already mentioned in post #3, believe the next big meet featuring Buffs is the Prefontaine Classic coming up on June 30th (being held at Stanford this year due to the re-building of the track in Eugene). In addition to Dani Jones racing her biggest race to date against many of the best in the world in the 1500M, also racing that day is Emma Coburn in the 3000M steeplechase.
(For Ms. Jones, it will not be realistic for her to actually contend against runners such as, among others running, the current Olympic, U.S. and European Champions. Along with just having a satisfying race being the main thing, assume a couple qualifying marks might (???) be on her checklist if she has a great race and has sufficiently recovered from her early season injury - those for the 2019 World Championships (4:06.50) and the 2020 Olympics (4:04.20). Her current personal best (4:07.74) from last summer has already qualified her for this year's U.S. Championships.)

Schedule, entries and live results (as they become available) are at https://eugene.diamondleague.com/program-results-eugene/ .

Preview of #ForeverBuff Emma Coburn and current Buff Dani Jones running in the steeplechase and 1500M, respectively, at the 2019 Prefontaine Classic (being held this Sunday at Stanford this year due to Oregon's Hayward Field being rebuilt).
(Note- Although Ms. Jones' is NOT a pro yet, I posted this in this thread since she's going up against a pro field.)

Track and Field | June 26, 2019
BOULDER – With a 5,000-meter NCAA National Championship in her back pocket, Colorado's Dani Jones begins her summer track season this Sunday in the 2019 Nike Prefontaine Classic at 3:31 p.m. MT.

The junior is set to compete in her second 1,500-meter race this season having qualified with her personal best 4:07.33 that she ran last June in the Portland Track Festival. Last season she won the USATF high performance section at the Pre Classic with a 4:07.74, then paced the Diamond League section the night after through 800 meters.

The race will feature 14 of the top women in the world, including recent Oregon alum Jessica Hull. The athlete with the fastest personal best in the field is Britain's Laura Muir who has a best of 3:55.22. Jones will compete with a trio of American athletes including Alexa Efraimson, Kate Grace and Shelby Houlihan. Jones beat Efraimson last season in the high performance race.
...

Jones will compete once again this summer in the US Championships at the end of July in Iowa.

Also racing in the Diamond League section of the meet will be CU alum Emma Coburn in the steeplechase. It is a stacked field of 17 women, only five of which has times this season. World Record holder Beatrice Chepkoech is in the race alongside current American Record holder Courtney Frerichs. Kenya's Norah Jeruto is also in the race with a world-best time of 9:03.71 this year that she ran in Oslo, beating Chepkoech and Coburn, who ran 9:08.42.

Other Americans in the race include NCAA Record holder Colleen Quigley, Mel Lawrence and the three-time NCAA Champion Allie Ostrander.

The meet will be televised live on NBC (corrected by Aztecbuff) from 2 p.m. MT to 4 p.m. It will also be streamed live on NBC Sports Gold.

My Notes (from an admittedly VERY non-expert relatively casual fan) -
  • I would think in the large majority of Prefontaine meets held annually over past decade or more, Jenny Simpson has run at this meet, the preeminent U.S. (non U.S. championships) meet every year. However, I assume she's skipping this year because her main event, the 1500M (that Dani Jones is running in), is NOT a Diamond League race this year, so there won't be any Diamond League points on the line based on where the runners finish. (As earlier posts in this thread also documented, she also already raced twice this month within a week and a half or so of each other, which is already a solid competition schedule for her.)
  • With a few of the top of the world runners in the 1500M in this field, a top overall finish is VERY unlikely for Dani Jones, and I'd guess probably isn't even a goal for her. (In the 2 Diamond League 1500M races Jenny Simpson ran earlier this month, the winning times were more than 11 seconds faster than Ms. Jones personal record.)
For me, it will be more fun and informative to get an indication of how she MIGHT*** be doing in her signature 1500M distance after being injured earlier this year looking at:
  • How she finishes against her contemporaries, for me most significantly Aussie Jessica Hull (who just went pro after 4 years as an Oregon Duck) and the U.S.'s. Alexa Efraimson (a former teen phenom who went pro out of high school, and is around a half year younger than Ms. Jones).
  • Whether she can challenge or improve her 1500M PR which, as noted in the article quoted above, is currently 4:07.33.
***Of course, as always seems to be the case with track and field, the unknown is, except for THE BIGGEST races of the year that are sure to be highlighted in every runner's schedule (the sure BIG one being the U.S. Championships for Ms. Jones this year), it's hard to judge any individual race negatively, as it's hard for general fans/ outsiders to know where a runner is in their health and training (have they tapered much if at all for an individual race, etc.?).

Live Video - As noted above, "The meet will be televised live on NBC (corrected by Aztecbuff) from 2 p.m. MT to 4 p.m. It will also be streamed live on NBC Sports Gold."
Per the schedule linked to below, Ms. Coburn's steeplechase is scheduled to begin at 2:11 PM MT, while Ms. Jones' 1500M should start around 3:31 PM MT.

Schedule / Live results - https://eugene.diamondleague.com/program-results-eugene/

Coburn now in 4th right behind 2nd and 3rd, but a long distance behind the leader

The girl that won is the world record holder and and just set a meet record and won by 9 seconds.

Looks like* (*since almost everything is in Spanish, and I don't speak it, can't guarantee anything) recently graduated Buff Gabby Scott may be getting her 1st post-collegiate experience, representing her country (Puerto Rico) in a couple events in the Under 23 category at the 2019 U-18 and U-23 NACAC ( North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association) Championships, being held in Querétaro, Mexico from Friday, July 5th through Sunday, July 7th.

(Per page 3 of http://panelcontenido.fmaa.mx/data/... dia 1 sesion matutina viernes 5 de julio.pdf , she ran 57.53 today. At NCAA's, she ran 56.04 in the finals, which just missed the upcoming World Championships qualifying time (56.00) for the 400M hurdles. Have no idea the intricacies of the World Championships qualifying process, but hope she does get to experience the Championships early in what I hope is a long professional career.)

Thanks to Flotrack (which is streaming (for its paid premium subscribers) the meet), I see some Buffs are running at the "Sunset Tour" meet, being held tomorrow night in Azusa (L.A. area) California.

Consisting mainly of middle and long distance races, looks like the purposes of this meet are:
The Buffs I see running (sorry if I'm missing anyone) from the Entries lists (https://www.flotrack.org/events/6486163-2019-sunset-tour/entries) -

Women's 1500M (Heat 2, 10:35 (edit) 10:25 PM MT start) - Current Buff Dani Jones (IAAF standard for Doha is 4:06.50, with her PR from last week being just off that (4:07.28).)

Men's 5000M (10:45 PM MT start) - #ForeverBuff Connor Winter (IAAF standard for the World Championships is 13:22.50. U.S. Championships standard is 13:35.00.)

Women's 5000M (11:05 PM MT start) - #ForeverBuff Maddie Alm (IAAF standard for the World Championshipsis 15:22.00. U.S. Championships standard is 15:25.00.)

Heading into the U.S. Championships, found a couple of articles about Buff running greats, both in Runners World-
  • One on Buff great Emma Coburn (see her tweet below for link), and
  • one covering how Buff great (AND assistant coach) Jenny Simpson and current Buff Dani Jones help each other out. (It also tells how working with ALL the Buff runners assists Ms. Simpson.)

Article on Jenny Simpson and Dani Jones (Entitled
"A Mentor and Her Protégé Will Face Off at USATF Outdoor Championships
Middle-distance star Jenny Simpson and collegiate standout Dani Jones have become like “sisters,” pushing each other to run harder and smarter.") - https://www.runnersworld.com/runner...mpson-dani-jones-compete-usatf-championships/

Unofficially, looks like Jenny Simpson easily qualifies for the finals with a 2nd place finish in her heat of the 1500M, while Dani Jones may be the 1st runner who does NOT advance on time as she looked to have finished with the 4th fastest time of the non-auto qualifiers, with only the top 3 qualifying.

Ms. Simpson's heat was by far the slowest, so she should have a lot left for Saturday's final. Ms. Jones looked to have been hurt by being in heat #1, as heat #3 ran the 1st 3 laps much quicker, so had the 5 fastest times and easily had 2 of the 3 time qualifiers.
