Greatest CU Football Player

Hagan. Go Hallett Hall!

Can't discount how tough it must have been to pick that team up after how dejected the entire campus was after losing Sal in the manor that we did.

How do you define greatness? The names mentioned, were all great players. To me, what makes you great is, do you make that dude next to you better? Do you make your team better? Answer that, you know you have a great player next to you. To say who CU's best player has been, hell, Idk, since I've been watching. I've always been partial to Charles Johnson, the wr. Can they lead, when their dudes are struggling? That guy could, he went through hell and back.

I think you’re probably making a joke, but he has a case. He might have the most points scored. (Too lazy to search for stats).
Sort of joking but he is definitely an all time great and may just have had the greatest NFL success.

In the argument for greatest player is Whizzer White:
Runner up for the Heisman
Consensus all American
1st round NFL draft
Led the league in rushing two times, one was his rookie year.
2 time first team all - pro, 1 second team.

The list of greatest CU alumni begins and ends with Byron White, because in addition to the above he:
Was a Rhodes scholar
Earned a silver star while searving in the navy in ww2
Deputy US Attorney General
US Supreme Court Justice
Unfortunately he doesn't get the credit he deserves, but if he had played and accomplished what he did 20 years ago instead of almost 90, I believe no other name would be under consideration.

Almost is another thread debate; greatest Buffs in the NFL. Who had the best NFL career? I would start it except too many would be on the Patriots and that would just piss me off. Lots of great Buffs played for the Steelers, which didn’t piss me off since they were almost black and gold. And I loved Cowers demeanor. And then we have Phil. Greatest Buffalo Heart?

Which Buff has won the most Superbowls? I think Helton had two with the 49’ers. Has to be a couple with two or three or four with the Patriots.

Alfred Williams has 2 with the Broncos

Some good ones that had good nfl careers are Cliff Branch, Dick Anderson, Alfred Williams, Kordell Stewart, Chad Brown, Ted Johnson, Daniel Graham, Mason Crosby, David Biakhtari (sp), Nate Solder, etc.

The debate here is because of lack of definition for the term "Greatest", which could mean anything.
  • Most Accomplished in life: Whizzer White
  • Most Accomplished in the NFL: Arguably, I'd go with Alfred Williams, but this better for over beers at Sackygate and likely without an undisputed conclusion.
  • Most Accomplished CU QB: Hagan with zero dispute. Undefeated in conference play, led the season that got us our National Championship.
  • Most Talented CU QB: Kordell Stewart. If only he beat Nebraska in 1994

Unless I missed it, I'm amazed it took to your post for Whizzer White to be named. Maybe his off-field accomplishments are overshadowing his on-field ones. He finished runner up in the Heisman and had a great (although short) NFL career (led NFL in rushing as rookie). Since he was from what I can tell, our first GREAT player, I have to put him at #1 above our actual Heisman winner. If we're talking about greatest CU player though, even if just on the field, all of the college HOFers should be in the conversation.

I thought about putting "most athletic" CU buff you've seen, but went with a more general talk on what you think is the best overall individual player. You can dissect it however the hell you want.

Helton was good, but this mention seems a little Cubby.

I guess he has me on ignore.

Dick Anderson was a starter on two Super Bowl champion teams and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1974. Cliff Branch should arguably be in the NFL Hall of Fame.
This was a hall of fame post. You should stop now and go out on top. (y)

Despite the Heisman win and how great he was in 1994, Rashaan's early exit from Boulder hurts his case in this argument.

I am leaning towards Hagan. He was incredible on so many levels. Plus he was a great leader. As great as Kordell was, the difference in performance in big games between Hagan and Stewart is stark.

Whizzer White's case as best CU football player ever suffers from lack of tape as much as recency bias. When we can look up Hagan's, Stewart's, Salaam's, etc highlights on youtube and see how dominant they were, it's hard for people to put White over them.

The greatest NFL career by a CU alum might be by the one who spent his entire career with the Raiders-Cliff Branch. He and Ted Johnson have the most Super Bowl rings among former Buffs that I know of-they both won three. Agree with what was said above-Branch IS (just based on the numbers and achievements) a hall of famer.

As a Simla Cub, yes. Yes it was. Lol.

Was just wondering who has the most. Has to be some Buff that played with the Patriots I’d think. But there are a few.

Tom Ashworth has two Super Bowl rings, Nate Solder has two, and Ted Johnson has three.

I think @ahoelsken has it correct above with Cliff Branch. I can't think of anyone else. I believe Solder only won 2 with NE.
