Official Buffs vs. Air Force Game Thread

There were so many gaffes against a team that you don’t want to have many gaffes.

Whether it was the early start or whatever else, Montez seemed to be sleeping in. Slow, missing open receivers, overthrowing, etc. Mangham had the hot hand in the game, as far as running went, Fontenot was moving around too much and getting caught up pretty fast. The missed PAT was just the sealing coat on a frustrating day.

The defense actually seemed to play to keep the offense in as much as possible. Let’s not forget that Army, playing a similar offense style, took Michigan to task last week. The defensive blunders were what I was expecting...though I cannot understand how the Buffs D can make average-to-slightly-above-average QB’s look Sunday ready?

That first play in OT, though, was the telltale sign that the defense was done for the day. I hope that Tucker can bring in some turnkey JUCO or Grad Transfer talent for the edges, maybe get lucky with some turnkey secondary kids for next season.

Three games into it - Viska’s role seems to be more workhorse, the touches he is getting get’s the yards needed, but not as many TDs as one would think he’d have. It makes me wonder if he isn’t 100% or are defenses just keying in on him too much? Montez just doesn’t seem like he is into it that much. A three year starter and fifth year senior should be able to lead this team in any situation. He has the physical talent to do this, but his head seems to kill the efforts. Landman just seems too preoccupied with the new system. It’s like he wants to blow up the play, but he has some assignment(s) going on that keep him still for too long.

I was impressed with Maddox on his efforts this game. He was keying in on the ball as far as the running game goes. I don’t think he is one for coverage. Hopefully the money gang style secondary will return soon!

Overall, quite a few wrinkles that need to be smoothed out for next week’s game against ASS(j)U(co)....at night, in the desert...hopefully the Buffs squeak out a win, and take the bye to get collected...

If SM was 6', he wouldn't be rated one of the 40 best college QBs. He has his moments, with that big arm, but for the most part he does not play that well. No ability to scramble, nervous about being hit, unable or willing to look at all his options on passing plays, etc. We should have used the wildcat and gone for 2 - there was no reason to believe we would be better than AF in overtime. What also sux, is that we apparently have no one better to replace him with

What??

All that matters is winning, but a legitimate argument could be made that CU could just as easily be 0-3 as they are 2-1. They could also easily be 3-0. Point being, there are disturbing trends through three games in all three phases.

Defense has yet to really dominate outside of a quarter or two, and have completely relied on turnovers. What happens when they play a team that takes care of the ball?

Offense was pretty good throughout CSU game, really bad for 2 1/2 quarters against Nebraska, and then really really bad for 3 quarters against AF. Inconsistent running game and OL play, and up and down QB and playcalling.

Special Teams... Stefanau has been nails (blocked PAT not his fault), Kinney is a true *cough* weapon as a punter. KO and Punt coverage leave a lot to be desired.

Coaching has been a mixed bag. Huge props to Tucker and staff for half time adjustments in all 3 games and phases. That ability is going to pay major dividends for this program, but their inability to have this team ready to play to start the game (for 3 straight games now) is inexcusable. I know it’s not the case, but it feels like they don’t bother watching film on the opponent, use the first half as their scouting period, and wait to make adjustments at half time. That has to change in a big way.

Laughing at all the end of the world posts. Remember Colorado was only picked to win 4 games this year. We have a chance in almost every game the rest of the way in a conference where the MWC might be better Top to bottom. People need to relax

Not the end of the world, but there does need to be a sense of urgency in this program. We fired a coach who went 5-7 in consecutive seasons dropping games like this one. The margin for error is pretty small.

If we "meet" those preseason expectations, that is a ****ty season.

No doubt, but season is far from over. We lost one game to a good team. We have lots of games left to teams that are probably worse than AFA. I still see 6-7 wins as very likely

The last few years, MM essentially won the games that CU had the talent advantage and should have won, and lost the games where they were the lesser team and should have lost. I never truly felt CU was going to win games they shouldn’t have under Mac. I believe Tucker will have this team in a position to compete and win games that they probably shouldn’t, so I really don’t think there’s a game on the schedule outside of probably Oregon on the road, that we can make definitive predictions about the outcome. I could see this team beating USC and Utah and losing to WSU and even Arizona on the road. Tucker just needs to get 4 more wins and we can call the season a success.

Sure, but you don't give more slack for a new coaching staff? I was like most and thought a 4-6 win season, and considering it's a new staff, I'm taking it. Next season, even though we lose some top guys, my eye is more critical, and then even moreso by the third season. Basically, I don't think 5-7 is a ****ty season this year, even though it's not we are hoping for.

Trust me. The glaze of **** covering your eyelids is blinding you then. Good luck to your team the rest of the season.
Dude. ****ing get lost. You are a ****ty troll, and now that we’ve beaten your sorry team, felon RB and dbag coach again with a 4 year break for you guys to choke on it, you can go survey some other fan base.

A MM team would have been blown out by a good AF team that had two weeks to prepare for a team that just won back to back rivalry games against teams desperate to beat us. We lost in overtime because of a blocked xp.

MT needs time and more of his recruits. I’m praying for a bowl game, but mostly want to see progress as his culture sinks in.

I still think this team can get to 6 wins.

Losing seasons are always ****ty IMO.

Next year is a MUCH tougher schedule too.

After sleeping on it, this loss gnaws at me more and more. Ugh. This one is clearly on the offense. I knew AF would move the ball and score. But I never, ever thought they could stop our offense. And they didn’t really. We stoped ourselves with just awful execution and mistakes. I hate to see Montez getting ripped so harshly but, man, he just did not show up.

I’m dumbstruck at his lack of field awareness and that it has never improved. I’ve been waiting for him to have that “ah ha moment” for three years only to be teased by his occasional spurts of greatness. Damned frustrating.

One of the most frustrating things yesterday is something you would not have seen on TV. He continually had guys open for either big gains or even TD’s but he was too busy running scared to even see them standing all alone waving their arms. Rather than assessing what his receivers are doing, he anticipates getting hit.
What you say about Montez is true. He kind of reminds me of Nuke LaLoosh. Big arm, tons of talent, but just not there mentally. He plays best when he isn't thinking. I am not sure that is the best trait for a QB.

As far as not seeing receivers, for years, thanks to MikMac's inablility to recruit the kind of quality and depth on the OL needed for P5 play, he has been taking a lot of big hits. OL has been, putting it nicely, below average. Shout out to Gary Bernardi.

I can't think of a game outside of 2016 (maybe Fusker LY) that the former staff won that they shouldn't.

It knaws at me too. I hate see so much on Montez. He did have a bad game, but the Oline, TE's and RB's just abandoned ship for 3 series in the 2nd quarter in terms of pass protection. Montez went from not looking great, to a pinball in a pinball machine, Montez got hit as hard as I have seen in many games. Nevertheless, he put them in a position to win an ugly team game.

Totally agree with that. Montez is best when he is just a gamer and not thinking. I would have like to have seen him run a bit more, even if 5 yards just to get out of whatever funk... A lot of fans and posters do not seem to understand that unless you OL + TE and RB's are good in pass protection, you do not get to go through your progressions. Practice makes perfect and there was no practice with a below average OL.

This is one of your better post for a while, very fair assessment of the range of issue we face. You are right, we are a few plays away from being 0-3, we are truly one play away from being 3-0 despite our issues.

I do believe that had we kept MM we would currently be 0-3, these are the type of games that we were losing to often under the past staff.

To this point MT has shown himself to be a quality game day coach and seems to be doing a good job during the week.

Our limitation though at this point in time is the talent level. Our offense and defense not being able to play complete games has a lot to do with our line talent not being good enough to dominate a whole game, even against MWC teams much less Nebraska.

I like this staff but simply put how long they are here and how many games they win will be based almost entirely on their ability to recruit players who can beat the players on the teams we play.

So far we know that Chev can recruit receivers, we finally look like we are recruiting RBs and TEs. QB looks positive and a huge step is that we look to be recruiting P5 level OL who don't have to grow and develop into P5 OL.

DBs is a question ,mark, LBs looks okay but just like the last staff our recruiting on the DL, especially at the HS level simply isn't good enough.

If this staff is replaced eventually I think it will be because they couldn't fix recruiting on the LOS, especially on the defensive LOS.

great point - let's just relax and keep losing, like every year. It's CU's specialty!
