Any local talk about DJ Hackett and Chris Brown?

Both of these guys are still avialable... The Broncos need to get off their rear and sign both of these guys. Signing them would solidify their respective positions in terms of adding players.

The big thing is that signing these two would allow the Broncos to focus their draft on the offensive and defensive lines, linebacker, and Safety.

They signed a WR. They're bringing back Travis Henry. How many freaking RBs and WRs do you want on the roster?

D.J. Hackett sort of makes sense, but why do people continue to toss out the idea of Chris Brown as some sort of signing that NEEDS to be done? He was a great Buff, but signing an injury prone RB that has been pretty mediocre in the NFL is not going to help the Broncos.

he has been good when healthy, and sorry I dont trust TH not to get suspended

Umm the WR they signed is not a legit #2 and since we have Stokely, I am guessing that he has the #3 spot locked up which leaves the new guy for the #4 spot.

Henry is good when he isn't injured and fumbling the season away in Oakland. Young is a little guy that can't carry it 20 times a game so it appears 3 would be a good number of running backs.

Okay, you guys don't trust Henry or Young to carry the load so let's sign another injury prone guy. That sounds like a great way to improve the team. I would rather see Andre Hall than Chris Brown. And 3 sounds like a great number for RBs? Huh? If you're trying to use three RBs to be successful, then you probably have nothing at that position.

D.J. Hackett would have been a decent signing, but there's no reason to sign him now that they have signed Colbert because I expect them to use a draft pick on a WR/KR.

D.J. IS THIS YEAR'S DONTE'

In 2007, Eagles receiver Donte' Stallworth was one of the top wideouts available in free agency. Inexplicably, he didn't sign an early deal with any team. Instead, he eventually inked a below-market contract with the Pats.

This year, D.J. Hackett is the receiver whom no one wants, at least not yet.

As a result, Hackett's agent is now talking about a possible return to the Seahawks.

"D.J. has some interest from some teams," agent Kevin Robinson said, "but the Seahawks are definitely one option."

Injury issues from 2007 apparently are limiting Hackett's perceived value. He played in only six games, with six starts in 2007. But in 2006 he played in 14 games, and the year before that he appeared in 15 games.

Moreover, the injury was a sprained ankle, not an ACL tear or something else that creates lingering questions after it supposedly heals.

We're not saying that anyone should give Hackett Bernard Berrian money. (Then again, we don't think anyone should have given Bernard Berrian Bernard Berrian money.) But Hackett has a role to play, and we're kind of surprised that the Eagles or the Bucs haven't added him to the roster, given that they run a similar offense.

And why haven't the Seahawks stepped up and paid this guy? Nate Burleson has been a disappointment to date, and Deion Branch has yet to play like the guy they thought they were getting when they gave up a first-round pick for him in 2006.

First off,why in the world would you trust henry? Second,I would love chris brown here but cowtown is right, injury prone and 3 rb's is a sign you don't have a number 1.

I'd rather have hacket than colbert. Colbert? LMAO

Well, I am thinking that if Chris Brown gets in a Bronco uniform he will win the No1 with Henry backing him up for a year before he gets the boot and Young being a good 3rd down type/changup back if he can stay off the wacky weed.

An injury can happen to anyone at any time. As long as they are no major injuires then he could be fine. I am less concerned about Brown though, I really think Hackett would make the most improvement to this team.

Forget the Broncos doing much in Free Agency. When Free Agency started in the NFL - the Broncos understood it better than most teams, Plus they had an aging future HOF QB they wanted to help win the SB for. The Broncos bought their SuperBowl by bringing free agents - Neil Smith, Alfred Williams, Bill Romanowski, Gary Zimmerman, Mark Schlereth and Ed McCaffrey. The Broncos could attract the top FAs because with Elway and their core the many players looked at going to Denver as an opportunity to win it all. The Broncos violated the salary cap in order to win those 2 SuperBowls.

But free agency has changed over time and Denver did not. Bad free agency deals combined with bad drafts has left the Broncos in a position where they have to rebuild and they are going to do it through the draft and low end free agents. The Broncos have a so-so team and are only about $10 million below the cap...Gold and Walker are a combined $10 million hit and they are not even on the team.

Time for the mastermind to show he can actually build something instead of having Bowlen buy it for him.

I don't watch the Panthers at all but the word around here is that Colbert has alot of drops and has failed to live up to a decent rookie season. Keyshawn came along in 2006 and then this past season was a disaster at the QB position, plus he's had some injuries along the way. He could very well get a new attitude and turn things around in Denver. One thing worth mentioning is that the Panthers have had some strange dealings with receivers - why did they let Keyshawn go, and why did Jarrett get virtually no playing time last year?

Brown for cheap can't hurt. Same for Hackett. I am guessing we will see what injuries do in training camp before the broncs spend any more cash on those positions. They still need Boss Bailey!

Again though, where are you getting that Chris Brown can be a starting RB in this league? He cannot stay healthy and you think he can be the #1 back here? His style of running is not conducive to a long career in the NFL. Hell, he had injury troubles at the end of his last season at CU. The Broncos don't need to be taking on more injury prone backs than they already have.

Hackett would be a decent pickup as I said above, but I think the Broncos are targeting a WR/KR in the draft.

And BlackNGold is right, the Broncos are finally taking the right approach this offseason by being cautious in free agency and people still have a problem with it. I really don't get it.

The Broncos already have 3 RBs on their roster. They usually draft one or sign one late. Brown doesn't fit.

The Broncos know that they most likely won´t challenge for a Super Bowl next season and they´re therefore eating quite a few contracts this season so they can clear cap space for 2009 and beyond.

And all those who are complaing that the Broncos are a little gun shy in Free Agency this season after they dug themselves into a nice little hole last season ... Green Bay spent $200,000 in Free Agency on signing bonuses last season and their season wasn´t bad at all.

Dead Cap Room: This is based on 2008 releases/retirements all hitting on 2008 cap.

Javon Walker $8m
Ian Gold $3.3m
Al Wilson $4.4m
Gerard Warren $2.5m
Matt Lepsis $5m
Rod Smith $2.046m
Greg Eslinger $42k
Brian Clark $4k
Domerink Hixon $192k
Warrick Holdman $25k

Total dead cap room=$25.5m

I think this is a good change in philosophy given that you usually end up over-paying for FA's and so many of Denver's FA signings in recent years haven't worked out all that well.

Colbert missed 4 games and only started 8 games and yet had 32 catches last season. That´s not too bad especially when you consider the guys that were throwing him the ball.

Cutler, if given protection, is a QB that can make receivers look better than they truly are and nobody is expecting Colbert to be an All Pro WR in Denver ... in fact, the Broncos don´t even need him to be one as he´ll be the third option in the passing game at best. If Colbert can catch like 40-50 passes next season that´s all they need. Colbert is a stop gap signing and the Broncos needed to bring in a veteran WR so they can groom a rookie behind him to be the #2 receiver in either 2009 or 2010. And the Broncos will draft a WR, probably with one of their fourth round picks.

I´d have preferred Hackett over Colbert myself, but the signing makes sense.

They should have signed Randy Moss when they had the chance. :smile2:

How much are we paying Henry this next season? If he's getting about the league average for running backs I'd say the Broncs are getting one hell of a bargain... despite the fact that he's a PR nightmare and is being watched by the drug testing folks like a hawk, he's still an exceptionally useful back when he's healthy and a perfect change of pace from Selvin.

Travis Henry RB 5 year deal $22.5m, $12m in guarantees. 2-tiered signing bonus, $6m in 2007 and $6m in 2008. Basically changed to a 5yr deal, $11m plus playing incentives. The Cap Hits from 2009-2011 will depend upon Travis hitting certain playing incentives.

Year Base SB RB/WB Cap Hit
2008 $1m $1.2m $100k $2.3m
2009 $1m $1.2m $100k $2.3m
2010 $1m $1.2m $100k $2.3m
2011 $1m $1.2m $100k $2.3m

Travis Henry RB-waived $6m option bonus-cap hit was $3.53m. New 2008 cap=$2.3m

I've long thought Brown would look excellent in a Steeler uniform.:smile2::thumbsup:

From what i heard up here in the northwest, Hackett wants starting wide reciever money because when he wasn't hurt he started due to teamates injuries. The Seahawks don't want to pay him starter money.

Skins seem to be interested ... this is from PFT

Texans brought in Chris Brown for a visit, btw.

Seahawks receiver D.J. Hackett visited the Redskins, got an offer, and didn’t accept it.

According to the Washington Times, Hackett will explore other options before making a decision.

“This will all be up to him,” coach Jim Zorn told David Elfin of the Washington Times. ”We’re not going to risk it all to try to pay him. The financial package has to work. But if we have a chance to get him, we’d like to have him. He’s got two other teams plus Seattle that wants to match [his contract offers].”

It’s a dramatic change in approach by the Redskins to free agency. In the past, the ‘Skins would close the deal quickly and decisively, usually by overpaying via a multi-year contract that was destined to be terminated in a couple of years.

Indeed, Hackett was the first free-agent that the ‘Skins hosted this year. They previously have re-signed two of their own free agents — quarterback Todd Collins and running back Rock Cartwright . . . Cartwright!

Hackett will visit the Panthers and the Buccaneers. The Seahawks also have an interest in bringing him back.

I think Bradshaw might have been the one qb with a stronger arm than elway, but i think John is better in pretty much all other categories.
