Sporting News ranks the Big 12 coaches

Yeah, not too bad. I don't think anyone can take anything away from Stoops, but I would question Mack Brown's hold on the #2 spot. But he does always have great assistants to make up the difference.

Gundy definitely deserves to be higher than the 3 noobs. I'm sure that this list had Chizik much higher last year before he even coach a game.

I like that Hawk is in the top half already and ahead of Pinkel, I think it is quite obvious to national and unbiased media that CU football is coming back into power.

But all that will be settled in the Fall!

How can you possibly question Mack Brown at #2? You do realize that he has an MNC, a Big XII title, MANY consecutive 9 & 10+ win seasons, right? I simply cannot understand why people think he's overrated.

All I said was that I would question his hold on #2.

I think Mangino is just as good of a coach, just does not have the talent, resources, etc. that Mack Brown does. I think Mangino gets more out of his players than Mack Brown does. If Brown did do that then he would have more Big XII titles at the very least.

I have given up trying to reason with people who think Mack Brown is not a very good head coach. If Mack Brown is considered overrated, the standards for head coaches are pretty unreasonable.

Mangino has only had one season with a winning conference record at KU. He only has two winning seasons overall. His overall record at KU is just one game over .500, while his conference record is 12 games below .500. The guy had a great season last year, but let's not go overboard here. One great season does not put him in the company of Stoops or Brown.

Ya, but at lease he's morbidly obese.

Agreed about Mangino's placement, but I don't have too much of a problem with the rankings as I do about the general tone of the commentary. Even the coaches at the bottom of the list are made out to be Lombardi's in waiting. Take Gundy, for instance, he managed to take the league's most physically talented qb this side of Vince Young and reduce his career to a rant at a columnist. Given Sean Sutton's hasty exit after two years manning the hoops program, I wonder how long he'll be enjoying the perks at T Boon State.

I do, however, think he's right to be optimistic about Briles at Baylor. I think that guy knows what he's doing, and could become the b12's south mini-Mike Leach.

I would absolutely love to have that kind of mediocrity at CU. And so would anyone else here.

Whenever somebody brings up how overrated Mack Brown is, I usually point out that he's never lost to Baylor. Not once. NEVER. In fact, I don't believe he's ever lost to *ebraska, either.

You are correct.

All that being said, I wonder if would still be head coach today if he didn't have Vince Young.

On the other hand, I guess at least half of being a successful college coach is recruiting, right?

true. it is a shame he is letting some of texas' best talent head north.

Now that Ron Prince has traded Fresno St for Montana St his Sporting News rank needs to drop... oh wait, he's already dead last. hmmm.... maybe KSU needs to switch to the WAC.

i wont question him being @ #2, no more that what I would question Bob Stoops @ #1. I wouldn't say Mack Brown is "overrated", more like under achieved, the same as any coach in some games, and some years with the talent that they have on their squad. He is a good coach, but has had the misfortune of being the head coach at a school in a conference twice now where it seems another coach and or school has his number.... i.e taking 22 years as a HC to win a conference championship is not the "shingle" you hang on your coaching wall...
