Karl Dorrell officially named Colorado HC

Tucker was a good hire. RG identified quality candidates and brought in a good football coach who could recruit and sell his dick off to recruits and parents. This was the perfect storm of events that led to Tucker bailing after one season. Maybe RG's contract negotiations could have been better, but RG is the only thing that should give CU fans any hope at this point.
Solid post.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah I don't believe that for a minute. I mean why did we raid Georgia's grad assistant staff if we could afford big time hires? We're broke as dick.

I can believe RG wanted to make a counter offer and was shot down, but matching? Not buying it. Just like my Atlanta Braves were going to make a legit offer for Anthony Rendon this offseason, not happening.

I think MM buyout handicapped us some in coaching spending last year.

Pretty sure the leak was that Rick George tried to counter the offer and that got misconstrued with "matching" the offer. No way in hell we were about to make him a top 12 paid HC in the country and have a top 6 AC salary pool in the country.

I don't think you go with an interim. It just screams small time. I love Chev's enthusiasm, loyalty and recruiting, but he is not HC ready.

You play the hand you are dealt, and MT, by cutting and running after one year, and shortly before Spring ball, has really dumped on CU.

MT better win, or he is in line to be the next Willie Taggart.

A 5-7 HC is not irreplaceable. MSU took a huge gamble. I liked the MT hire, I think he is likely to be a good HC, but he has no track record, he is all potential.

CU's next HC will probably be of the same pedigree. CU is not going to pry an established P5 HC out of their gig at this point in time. Had they been on the Carousel earlier, maybe, but now, not likely. Probably the best shot would be Campbell at ISU, but still a longshot.

It is likely to be a coordinator or G5 HC.

Now is when we see if RG really has AD chops.

The word leaked from the CUAD to the press is that Colorado was going to match MSU’s offer.

“Counter” and “Match” are not the same. No way CU can go to $12M or more for a coaching staff. Hoping the counter may have been in the $8M to $9M range but no one knows.

You’re right. I am conflating “counter” and the “match” phrase from Pritchard.

Paraphrasing RG: Interim is a short term thing only. Could be made permanent. Will be someone who is committed here.

I just want to point one thing out. Many, many years ago CU had a coach resign on June 1st. That may be an even worse time to have to make a hire.

The AD made a serious run at an established P5 coach; had a tentative acceptance - only to see that coach "change his mind" at the last minute. That sucked. **** that coach forever and always - for more reasons that just this one. I'm serious here, **** that guy.

Now we're looking really desperate; choice #1 left us at the alter. It's June, the clock is ticking and we don't have a coach for the fall.

So... we go out and hire some random AC from Michigan that wasn't really on anyone's radar.

The lesson: good things really can happen when you're forced to hire a coach "out of cycle."
