Spring Depth Chart

The biggest surprise for me is seeing Obi on the third team. For all the accolades he's gotten, I would think he'd be higher, perhaps even first team. I would think that it would be a kind of rotation with Lucas, Herrod and Obi alternating at both end spots. But I'm an idot. What the hell do I know?

I agree, after seeing the scrimmages I thought for sure he would start this year.

3 things suprise me.......

Once again, we here coaches and fans rave about certain players, obi and simas. Both are 3rd on there respective positions.

Sipili is behind smart, but that may change due to sipili missing some time.

I know that Simas' position is because of the grouping thing. Obi's position did catch my eye because I don't remember hearing a thing about Brace this spring (when I was at the scrimmage I noticed he got bulled by Miller once).

Some observations:

1. The depth at safety is scary. And not in a good way.
2. While Smart is #1 right now, the potential of Sipili and Burton playing alongside each other in the middle is fun to think about. Two 250+ lb. linebackers.:wow:
3. Kai at #3 at FB does not sit well with me.

:yeahthat:

If he ends up riding pine, I'm gonna be beyond pissed off. They've got a RS-Fr. starting in his spot at the OL. You don't move a Frosh AA unless they're going to start at the other position. The OL is deep, but not that deep.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. I fully understand what you're saying, but my impression is that the coaches really feel like Kai's size is limiting him and what they can do on the O-line. They love his tenacity, but they have other guys behind him that have a lot more upside. They want to have him on the field, but don't want to hold the other guys back, either.

I was really surprised at the LG spot as well. All the articles and posts seemed that Head and Iltis were going at it for that spot and that Faatagi would be the RG. Instead the chart has Matt Bahr/Shawn Daniels !?

Seems strange that Head-Iltis-Faatagi would be fighting over only 1 guard spot.

His size didn't hamper him last year. It didn't keep him from being either #1 or #2 on the OL in pancake blocks. He plays with a mean assed streak that you need on the OL. If they're going to start him elsewhere, so be it. But you don't take talented football players like that off the field in the name of potential.

Potentially you have a hole at guard on the OL.

I have a feeling Kai will play on deffinate passing downs and he will play in very short yardage plays either blocking for DS or running the ball himself.

Experience on the offensive line is huge. By moving Kai off the line, we're potentially looking at two new/inexperienced starters on the offensive line. I don't care how much potential a guy has, an inexperienced line is not a recipe for success.

Wow the O-Line seems a little unusual. Also, Eugene Goree is listed as the #1 NT with Nicolas out for the rest of the Spring, does anyone know why? Let's hope it's not serious

Yeah, where are all the fans who slobbered over kai moving to fb and telling people not to question this move at?

3rd string fb? If kai is playing 5 plays a game, this would be the DUMBEST move so far in the hawk era.

Either play him full-time at fb or KEEP him on the OL.

I knew this was dumb the moment I first saw it here.

Have faith. Coaches aren't going to waste that talent.

I will admit that I was all for this move when I first heard it. I did notice that Kai had some trouble in one-on-one passing situations towards the end of the year (Alabama really exploited him, I thought). And then we heard feedback that, when he saw the field, he did deliver some nice shots. And I also understand why he is 3rd on the depth chart. He did miss quite a bit of his first Spring at FB and putting him #1 on the depth chart only to justify the move would be stupid and transparent.

The one thing that does worry me is how much he sees the field even if he is #1 come fall. I do not believe that because we tried the spread this spring we will move to it in the fall. It makes NO sense to have that be our primary offense. It's a nice change o pace and if we pull it out for a series, or even a set of downs, that could really keep the defense confused. So that leaves the other 80% of offensive snaps we take next fall (just a guess) and how Kai will play a part. Maybe an H back role, lined up next to Cody in shotgun, power I, or something else. But I agree it would be a waste to have him on the field for 5-10 plays a game (unless we are scoring 50 a game. then I could care less)

Anyone hear anything on some of the new walk-ons; e.g., Travis Sandersfeld (SS), David Goldberg (Mike), Tyler Sale (DT), Kyle Tompane (TE)?

Also, regarding Mr. Kealaka’i Maiava -- one of the objectives of spring drills is to experiment. It's not as if anyone is stuck at a position permanently. It's odd to read complaints at this point about trying someone at a position, especially when those complaints are coming from people who were originally advocating the experiment. Some of these players may return to their previous positions, but it would be nice to give them a little time before pronouncing the experiment a mistake. It would also be nice to have some of the players learn more than one position.

True but with maiava, they need to figure it out quick,if fb isn't working out,he needs to gain back the weight and get back on the OL.

Forgot one: Brandon Gouin (WLB), anyone know anything about him?

Brandon Gouin was a QB recruit from Boulder High (2-star from Scout.com) who signed with Air Force.

He must've transferred when the coaching change was made at AFA and walked-on at CU. Some of the notes out of spring scrimmages have been pretty good about him at LB.

I recall some very positive buzz around his transfer. People saying that CU was getting a far better player than a 2 star.

Yeah, I know about Brandon Gouin. He was a QB at BHS and a pretty decent one at that. I heard he was up at UNC but that must have not panned out for him. If he's at WLB now then he's put on a good 25-35 lbs. He had wheels in HS, but that doesn't always translate to the college game.

He's also had an MIP and inferred to have academic troubles causing him to miss practices and scrimmages. He would most likely have been down in the depth charts for O-line as well.
