3-4 Defense...

Interesting to note this mentioned more lately.

With the lack of depth at LB due to Katoa-Duren, etc. and the lack of real size at DL behind the "Big 3" Nicolas, Hypolite, and Goree it seems natural to make this shift. We don't have any big DL recruits coming in this fall either. Cunningham is talented, but not very "big", and no DE. Not to mention more of the Big XII running pass happy offenses.

In this formation, depending on the type of 3-4 they run, it would make sense to have Obi, Brace, and Hudgins move to WOLB (Buck) spot and provide the pass rush needed from the outside. This would allow Burton and Stengel to provide more depth at the more tradition LB spots which would be needed if the went to a 3-4 alignment.

Nicolas-Hypolite-Lucas-Goree-Lawson would be solid at the 3 DL spots.

Smart would then be definitely way too undersized for the Mike spot, and would probably need to move to the Will or Sam spot.

Just a thought, any others... or is this just a temporary formation wrinkle???

I'm sick of reading about how much our defense is going to suck. ITS SPRING BALL MF'ers! Jesus christ. Every year someone freaks out about something. If the offense does good then that means the defense sucks. Or if the defense is doing well then the offense blows. I am sure our D is going to be okay. We might not be amazing. But i think we'll be pretty darn good.

The only legitimate concern is at CB. But i think Smith and McKay will do a good job.

WOW - I never mentioned our defense sucking, and I never "freaked out", and I would never call you a MFer either for posting a legitimate football question.

It's spring ball, there isn't enough real football to talk about, so why not discuss the few things there are to talk about.

You need LB's for a 3-4.

Alot of the current DE's in the 4-3 defense would probably be converted to OLB, adding depth and fitting the roles required in the 3-4.

Jon Major would like seem like a great fit in a 3-4 defense with his combination of size/speed.

That reply wasn't aimed at you. My bad. :sad1:

Yeah, some people need to relax a little. The program is headed right back to the top; if it takes 2 yrs, 3 yrs, 4 yrs, its gonna happen. So why obsess about things we can't control? The offensive line is going to be great this year, and the front four on defense ought to be pretty good too(especially if Hudgins is healthy this fall). And we have plenty of playmakers on offense. What's not to like? From 70-3 to this is a pretty good place to be. Four years ago top recruits wouldn't take barnett's phone calls; now we are competing pretty well with Oklahoma and Texas for top recruits. But some people can only whine about Cody not being 6-4. Sigh. Would anybody really rather be KSU or Nebraska right now? We're almost there people. Dan Hawkins has it, the players know it, the recruits get it, and that's what matters.

I'll believe it when I see someone step up on the field. Dizon made those around him look better than I believe they really were last year.

Burton, Sip and Smart all have started games, and the rest are talented. LB does not have me worried. The competition will get better once Major and Rippy get here in the summer as well. (I'm not counting on Mohler or Katoa for next season:huh:)

I agree for the most part, but eventually results need to translate to the field. If we're still talking about "potential" 3-4 years from now, that's not a good situation.

I don't buy that, we have the best LB coach in football. If Cabral weren't here I might consider that but he coaches all of them up to par or better.
