CU-UCLA Game Thread! Espn 2 5 PM MT

I disagree. Winning solves all your problems. You could have the best recruiter, if he is at a loosing program he wont pull in 4 or 5 * players.
If you are an average recruiter at a winning program you will get those top commits.
Players want to win, if you win they will come.
I would say wins matter more when you have poor recruiters.
Tell me how that worked out when we were a top 15 team and won 10 games in 2016.

BTW - getting Moretti to transfer substantially inflated our rank.

MMs recruiting didn't cut it at all but to say the recruiting didn't improve over time is also revisionist history. The team improved over time and they were able to recruit better.

How does winning make a coach with an innate personality that is unwilling to sell hard a good recruiter?

I guess I need examples. Or maybe CU can hire Jeffcoat, Lindgren and Adam’s again?

Kids want to play for winning programs. We are not a winning program. One winning season in 15 plus years doesnt cut it.

One reason why macintyre was fired was because the recruiting after 2016 was a disaster. It looked better than it was because of the Moretti transfer. Ending in the 40s with your prep class after a ten win season is a nightmare.

The idea that Colorado’s recruiting got better because of that season is the revisionist history. Here’s the lesson: wins on the field don’t produce recruiting victories. Coaches who can sell playing time and/or an NFL future win in recruiting.

What most of you are not answering: what does winning 1-3 games do for Colorado’s recruiting if the staff can’t close? Ending in the 40s/50s again will not make us a sustainably successful program. Continue drinking the Kool-Aid if you wish.

Does Alabama have great recruiters, or can Alabama pick their players cause the kids know they will win? Switch out Alabama with any of the perennial top 5 teams. We are currently recruiting in or weight class. To think a great recruiter can bring in a top class to a loosing program is unrealistic. You win and the kids will come.

One winning season in 15 years does not make us a winning program. It was an anomaly.
You said that winning “solves all your problems”. Even when we won, it didn’t solve all of our problems. We need closers to improve recruiting. We don’t currently have them. Winning 1-3 games won’t make recruiting better next year.

This is why we’ve sucked for almost 20 years. We haven’t made recruiting a sustained priority.

I'm hoping for wins to help this unknown staff more than they would a better known staff. They need credibility.

But your overall point is correct. Recruiters recruit.

Alabama recruited their way to success. Before Nick Saban was their HC, their program was bereft of talent for Alabama’s standards. Even in his first season, they were not great (remember the loss to ULM?).

They sold playing time and a pathway to the NFL to that first crop of winners. They started getting really good players because of their commitment to recruiting and have been successful ever since.

The staff being known is not the issue. Young Embo is an unknown quantity and is making small inroads. Coach Mike was just a random skinny white dude who got awesome OLB recruits of diverse backgrounds to trust him. We need more closers.

The HC is. I'm hoping here dammit. And If it's on closers, well, we might as well win cause this staff ain't changing this year unless someone gets hired away

First, crow eaten cold. HCKD and staff put a W on the board first game out.

Noyer looked solid and poised. Broussard was a huge surprise. OL performed well.

The D got exposed in the second half by a pedestrian fUCLA team. I am concerned when a crummy team hangs 42 on the supposed strength of the team. I have never thougth Summers was all that.

Now that film is out on Noyer, the CB's are going to tighten up and force him to throw downfield to beat them. Can he?

A W is a W. Great job.

Winning by 6 when the opponent gifted 21 points off TO's and killed a fourth possession with another TO is a bit concerning.

Wins matter when you have good recruiters. We do not have good recruiters or a competitive recruiting infrastructure. The idea that winning 1-3 games will improve Colorado recruiting is unfounded.

Did Demetrice Martin forget how to recruit when he got here? Did your boy Tucker take Chev and Michalowski's recruiting abilities with him when he left?

What's your definition of a "competitive recruiting infrastructure", Manhattan? Nebraska? They've been fourth in the Big 10 in recruiting every year he's been there, and Frosty is still 9-19 IIRC.

Dumb ****ing take.

Totally disagree here. That was one of the finest performances by a buff coaching staff in a long long time.
No discipline penalties, one pre snap penalty, well executed subbing and grouping, extremely effective game plan and execution of that plan, extremely good play calling and players playing above expectations

The only problem I saw was the MM era like PI penalties.

Given the incredible adversity this staff faced, the results were nothing short of phenomenal.
I didn't like not using our TOs at the end of the half, and there was a play when we should have gone for it, but didn't. I'll have to check the replay. Play calling good on O, D questionable

Send me those data. No one offs. Aggregate.

I get what you are saying but KD’s pick for recruiting coordinator pretty much has neutered the recruiting efforts. He is a dinosaur that does not get the world of recruiting today. He is a major problem

Does winning overcome a poor recruiting staff? Absolutely not. I'm with you that this staff isn't getting it done and needs changes in personnel and strategy to recruit better.

Did an improving program with poor recruiters recruit better as the program improved? Also yes.

Just because the current staff isn't getting it done doesn't mean winning won't help.

The improvements were from duldrums for all programs to average. I thought we wanted to get out of average.

Edit: in researching further, it looks like our recruiting improved along with the conference. We didn’t get mich better until recruiting became the focus with MT.

the game has nothing to do with the crappy recruiting going on. Nothing.

The bitching about it doesn't do much either. Look-if we have guys recruiting like Bernardi and Jeffcoat did on this staff who make it 3-4 years here under Dorrell.......I'm there with you. For now, BOTD.

This year still doesn’t matter. We won’t win a division, conference, or national title. 1-3 wins won’t propel the program forward in recruiting. Making the near term a priority is really poor program management.

I’m glad we won last night. I don’t like rooting against my team. However, program management suffers when you don’t have a pipeline of competent QBs.
The differences we still have (in this forum, ha!):
1. I think recruiting can be helped with a 3-3 showing of respectability and good coaching. For example, if I'm the Dad of an OL recruit, I immediately think after last night that the OL coach is better than anyone on here had credited him for. So in general, leaving a positive impression is VERY important in my mind.

KD has NOT being given the benefit of the doubt by recruits. We are not doing that here as fans, so of course recruits are not. We can null this.

2. We don't really know how Lewis has responded. Perhaps he's just making frosh errors and hasn't grasped the finer points. In that case, putting him in when he has enough grasped to succeed (at some level) will be beneficial. That may be weeks ago, or it may not be this season. For all we know, Lewis is being disciplined and is in the dog house. We don't know.

Already happening. Look at the results

We are a game in-again. If we're having this conversation in 2022 or 2023, I'm agreeing with you. Not right now. Plus-Nebraska has a very competitive recruiting structure. They've been fourth in the Big 10 in recruiting behind OSU, PSU, and Michigan/Wisconsin IIRC..........and Scott Frost is 9-19.
