Sunday Morning QB makes his prediction for the Buffs

I'd never seen any actual game footage of that Iowa State debacle... uff, I can't wait for the day I get to punch Clete Blakeman in the face.

6-6 is my worst case scenario. I can't come up with any realistic scenario to see 3-9. No way, no how.

9-3 would be a huge success and my realistic best case scenario. The buffs would have to get some of those bounces going their way that have gone against them these past few years to get there.

No need to. It's painful. The entire group we watched it with was going WTF? Even my wife and her ISU friends were saying they have no idea how they won that game. Weird **** always happens in Ames.

His best case scenario? 7-5...

Worst case? 3-9

Prediction? 5 and 7.

Ouch. SMQ is an opinion I usually respect and I think I have to agree with him on our best case. The prediction is not bad either. Heaven forbid we got 3 and 9, I don't think that will happen at all, but then, I am a BUFF. 8 and 4 baby!

Ugg... just watched that ISU video on there with the ISU commentators saying over and over and over, 'that's the right call.' No. No, it isn't. :pissed:

Oh ya, the article contains footage of the ISU game... Should have warned everyone. God that was painful to watch....

Why didn't they snap the ball when the ref blew the whistle? ARRRRRGGGHHHHHHH

First off, I'm sure it was loud as all hell - even if it was Ames. 2nd, why did that ref start the clock? Third, the buffs were set on the previous play - what's the problem? Are they supposed to wait for the ref run down the clock so they lose? Uggg...

as much as I don't like it, 3-9 isn't that far out of the realm of possibility... all it would take is a major injury.........

I think it would take more than 1 major injury. If CU goes 3-9 and half the team isn't injured, Hawk has to go. There are about 5 wins built into this schedule. The rest will be a dogfight.

i really, really hope for 8 or 9 wins plus a bowl win.

we are about 1 very good recruiting class away from having enough frontline athletes to make some real noise. we still won't have the depth of usc, texas, ou, etc., but if hawkins and company can pull in one more great class that addresses our need positions, we should be able to go toe to toe with anyone.

this is, as usual, a pivotal year in the rebuilding.

if our Buffs can pull off a 9 win season, i think we'll see a top 15 class with a lockdown corner or 2, some dl, and probably an elite safety and qb.

then, with a little luck on the injury front, we should see this thing start to really get rolling.

Hawkins could go 1-11 this season and he'd still get another year to turn things around on the field. He's doing way too much good in rebuilding every other aspect of the program to not be given at least that much leeway.

No way they fire Hawk. I know alot of you get all butthurt when people say we have a young squad. But its true. Look at our potential starters for this year. I expect them to mature from last years bi polar team we saw. But they are still young.

Cody is a Sophmore
Darrell is a Freshmen
Devanny is a SR but hasn't seen any significant amount of PT at TE
Ryan Miller is a Sophmore
Nate Solder is a Sophmore with no PT at tackle
Guard position could go to Fataagi(SR) with no PT
The other spot could go to MTM a true freshman
WR's are the same way. Josh Smith is a sophmore and Simas is a RS-Frosh

Look. I could go on and on. But it won't get through to some people. You rarely win in college ball with that kind of youth on your squad. JMHO. I'm not trying to say we're going to suck. But you have to realize that the cupboard was bear when hawk came here.

There is no way we go 3-9. The only reason we went 2-10 two years ago is because the team was out of shape and didn't know the system, and even then if we had been a little luckier we could have won 3 or four more games. If we had been able to run more than a handful of plays we could have gone to a bowl.

I have no idea what our team is going to do this year, but does it seem likely that we are going to lose either the CSU or Eastern Washington games? 2-2 seems like a realistic worst case scenario in non conference. Does anybody really think we are going to win 1 lousy game in conference? or even two? That's bullsh*t.

We won 6 games last year playing a whole bunch of freshmen and redshirt freshmen. We gave away the ISU game, we had every chance to win FSU and ASU, and we probably should have beat Kansas too. The only game where we really looked outclassed was Missouri.

Are we going to get slower this year? Are we going to have less depth? Is our qb situation better or worse? Are we going to have less confidence? Did we lose more talent through graduation than is coming up? Is our o-line going to be worse? The answer to all these questions is no.

I think 3-1 in non-conference is realistic. The home conference games are Texas, KSU,ISU and OSU. I think 3-1 is realistic there too. We can beat Texas, but we could stumble against OSU or KSU, even though I think that's unlikely. On the road, we've got Nebraska, Kansas(which has lost an awful lot of talent), Missouri, and Texas A&M. I think 2-2 is pretty realistic, although 1-3 is possible too. Add it up: 7-5 realistic worst-case, 8-4 likely, 9-3 realistic best case. And if Darrell Scott does turn out to be the second coming of Adrian Peterson (and since he was AD for all day, maybe DScott can be All Night?), then maybe we can play for the conference title. Who, besides Missouri, is really scary in the north? kNebraska?

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, but I'll throw a couple things into the mix that you're not acknowledging - we've lost to both Kansas and Kansas State the last two years. Something that those two teams do gets us off our game. We should, by all accounts, murder KSU. But they have a very irritating way of beating us lately. We should, by all accounts, bitch-slap *ebraska. But the game is in stincoln, and they might be playing for a bowl bid.

Lots can happen, but on balance I agree that a 9-3 season is probably best case, and 6-6 is worst case.

Good point sackman, but still, I don't see how we lose more than 3 conference games. Cody is going to be better, his backups are going to be better, the o-line is going to be better, I think the rb's will be better, the wr's are going to better(and a WHOLE lot better later in the season), the pass rush ought to be a bit better, and the secondary ought to be about the same. What's going to be worse? Maybe TE, if Geer gets suspended.

Dizon and TWheat are gone. They were pretty damn good, man.

This is going to sound really strange, but losing Wheatley is going to be felt more than losing Dizon IMO. Sounds crazy to say that but I like the LB depth way better with Sipili and Burton coming back, along with Smart and Jones, plus Beatty and the incoming guys. I think LB will okay. DB has me the most concerned of any posistion, even TE.

I agree DAAAH, but are the linebackers as a unit going to be worse? We played, what, 5 guys last year? With Sipili back, Mohler qualified, Rippy and Major, we are going to have depth at linebacker for the first time in 6 or 7 years. And the secondary? I'd say Jimmy Smith is going to be better, McKay is going to be better, I see no reason why the safeties will be worse, etc. TWheat was a fine player, but he wasn't a shutdown corner and he wasn't that consistent either. Don't get me wrong, he's a loss, but I think Jimmy Smith and Gardner McKay will fill in pretty well. I think Jimmy Smith can be the best corner we've had since Figures.

And look overall: are the recruiting classes getting better or worse? Are players improving or stagnating? And who are best players? Most of our best players are freshmen. Are they going to get worse? It's possible, but I doubt it.

Secondary ought to be the same:confused: Are you kidding? They are replacing both CBs and one of those was very good. At best the secondary is completely unknown, at worst it is a step back.

My take on the original article is that, from the outside looking in, it's right on target. I believe Hawkins in on the right track and the Buffs will surprise people this year. Surprising people means that the team has a lot of unknowns or isn't expected to do great things.

Total unknowns (IMHO):
OL - They will gel or not. To me this is the key to the entire season. The articles statistics about Cody playing well when the running game is going is right on.
Running game - In addition to the OL being an unknown, the running game is as well. Will Sumler and/or Lockridge step up? Is Scott as good as advertised? We all want to think so, but it doesn't mean anything until it happens on the field.
Secondary - Losing Wheatley & Burney hurts. I know everyone focuses on TWheat but Burney was solid on the other side last year (watch the end of the OU game again if you have any doubt about that).
Pass Rush - Why exactly do you think this is going to get better? The only answer could possibly be, "because it can't get worse".

If all of those fall into place well, the Buffs are looking at a breakout season but that's a lot of IFs.

I agree with you. I don't see 3-9 by any means which is why I made that statement. I think a corps could lead this team to 3-9 record though. 5-7 is a worst case for me. Sorry if you feel anal pressure when someone disagrees with you but I don't.

I just didn't agree with your "Hawk has to go" statement. And the butthurt comment wasn't really aimed at you. But if you want to get all defensive then go nuts.

Man, everyone here is getting sandy vags waiting for the season to start.:smile2:

As far as I am concerned, after CU pulled off the upset of OU last year, I don't think any game is unwinnable for CU. We are counting out MU this year, but who would of really thought CU could have won againt OU last year?

I will be shocked with less that 6-6, but think 8-4 is entirely possible, and that is where I would expect us to end up around. one win more or less easily possible, but I think CU stepped up and recruiting and talent is on the rise from past years. I expect another step forward from CU this year, although not a BCS type of step up. I do think that BCS might be something we can think about the next year if we do pull off a 8-4 or 9-3 type year this year though.

TWheat was a fine player, but he wasn't a shutdown corner and he wasn't that consistent either.

I will disagree with this statement until the end of time. Wheatley was probably the best CB we've had here since the days of Ronnie Bradford and Deon Figures.

he was no deon figures or chris hudson or even bradford.

he was probably a step below strickland, imho.

No offense, but what are you basing this on? Smith the best corner since Figures? Say what?

I look at the secondary and I see some decent players. I don't see any real stars.

I think he's referring to Smith's potential. He could really be one of the best CB's whe've ever had when his career is all said and done.

Figures won the Thorpe award, so there's no arguing that. But I'd put him right up there with any of the other CB's we've had, including Strickland. He's fast, has good instincts, is a good tackler, and was always put on the other teams' best WR.

I just don't see it. I think Jimmy Smith could end up being a good CB, but I don't think he's an all-conference/All-American type CB. Just my opinion though.

We would be in a much better position IMO if Burney wasn't out this year due to injuries.

hudson won the thorpe too.

and mark haynes was damned good back in the day. and cullen bryant before that.

ben kelly and strickland were both arguably better than t-wheat.

i'd put t-wheat in the top 10 corners all-time at CU, but he is not #2 below figures. that's too high.
