Rumor Has It That Riar Geer Is Eligible This Fall

Suspended for what? I'm still unclear on what happened. I've always said if he's guilty he needs to to be held accountable. But in my mind, there's a good chance that he was punched first. Does somebody have info that I don't?

Uh huh, exactly. I'm not sure anyone here has all the facts. If Geer is at fault, then he should receive due punishment. If he's cleared of any wrong doing, then the university should leave him alone and Hawk should be free and clear to either count the missed spring as his "lesson" or to take away some playing time as a reminder of the expectations of a student/athlete.

Players have been warned, repeatedly by Hawk and staff, not to go near that place. I think that's what pissed the staff off more than anything.

people on rivals (i switched from rivals to scout, so far so good) in the forums are saying he is probably eligible too. Some guy is saying geer actually told him he is eligible.

In my mind, what Duren did was far far worse than getting in a fight.

Duren got kicked off not so much for WHAT he did, but WHEN he did it - a week after Katoa's and Geer's arrests and a team meeting about being good citizens.

If the greer case gets thrown out do we lose points in the Fulmer Cup?

I was just checking the daily camera and found this posted today at about 3:30. I'm not exactly what to make of it but the legal portion of this has at least been resolved.

http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/jul/18/buffs-player-pleads-guilty-assault-case/

Looks like he managed to plead down to misdemeanor assault and he could get anywhere from probation to 2 years in jail depending on sentencing (August 18). As far as judicial affairs goes, it appears his suspension has been lifted and he's been put on the most severe level of probation. No word yet on what Hawk will do but I guess we'll know before classes start at least. I'll be interested to see if he starts practicing anytime soon.

Of course I sometimes lose bets...

After reading that article, it's anyones guess as to what Hawk might do to Geer? Bohn's comment in that story sounds somewhat forgiving. I suppose Hawkins could suspend him anywhere from multiple games to the entire season. Even though he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, guilty is guilty. So I'm not holding my breath as to what the final outcome might be? I'll hope for the best and expect the worst.

I could see Hawk suspending him for a few games. But will Geer have to face the university's review board, like Katoa did? That possibility scares me more than what Hawk or the AD might do.

Rubino asserted in a May court hearing that Williams was actively involved in the fight and probably threw the first punch.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop a second-degree felony assault charge and a misdeameanor harassment charge against the CU Buffs tight end in exchange for a guilty plea to third-degree assault.

That’s a Class 1 misdemeanor, and the only assault charge in Colorado that is not a felony, a distinction could prove critical to Geer’s future as a Buffs player.

Dave Plati, CU's sports information director, said Friday that coach Dan Hawkins does not allow convicted felons on the team.

Any lesser charge, Plati said, falls under Hawkins’ more forgiving “once is a mistake, twice is a behavior” policy.

That means Geer needs to stay out of trouble from now on, he said.

“Any more run-ins would easily jeopardize his future here,” Plati said.

Plati said Hawkins is out of town and couldn’t be reached to provide a definite answer as to Geer’s status on the team going into the fall.

Geer, who remains free on a $500 bond, was suspended from school by CU’s Office of Judicial Affairs after his arrest last winter and the team suspended him as well.

CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said Geer continued going to class in the spring while his suspension was under appeal. He said the university put that suspension into abeyance — which is CU’s strictest probationary status — just last week.

Plati said the team generally follows the Office of Judicial Affair’s lead when it comes to reinstatement.

Geer played injured much of last season after tearing a meniscus cartilage in his left knee during a game in September. He came to CU as part of Coach Gary Barnett’s last recruiting class, and will be a junior this fall.
Lynn Katoa, another Buffs player arrested in March for assault in a separate incident, is scheduled for an arraignment July 30.
Geer pleads guilty to a midemeanor and everyone wins. DA gets a plea deal, victim doesn't have to go to court to testify, Geer doesn't have a felony on his record and gets to stay on the team.
I think he gets suspended for the non-con schedule and then hopefully plays his last 2 years and keeps out of trouble.

On what do you base that.

Circumstances.

In the cases of Geer, Sipili and to some degree Katoa there may have been some mitigating circumstances. The legal dust had not yet settled, and even when it did the wrong and right of the situation wasn't really clear.

Duren was a kid who was already apparently in trouble with the coaching staff for multiple infractions (whose nature I don't know). His final transgression lacked any degree of uncertainty. You know, the broken glass and trail of blood. And then Coach Hawkins released him after a late-night conversation.

Maybe you have some insights I don't, but based on what I read on Buffzone Duren had been walking a line and then crossed it. While I respect a coach's role as an advocate for these players, at some point the door on redemption closes. It's my conclusion, as a media observer, that Duren earned the closed door.

Again, if you have info I don't, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Did I do something I shouldn't have? My point was I don't think that was a very credible source that Riar would play this year. It would be nice but Judicial Affairs doesn't cut alot of slack.

Wow, two posts and you're crying already. Get some stones and man up, Sally.
