Rolling in the dough: Salaries for assistant coaches skyrocketing
By Jake Trotter

Five years ago, Les Miles convinced Oklahoma State to become the first school in college football to offer multi-year contracts to all assistant coaches.

The move added security to a profession that had felt little over the years.

Today, long-term contracts, performance-based incentives and rapidly rising salaries are reasons why there's never been a better time to be an assistant coach in college football.

An in-depth analysis by The Oklahoman of Big 12 coaching contracts and salaries revealed that assistant coaches have never been better compensated, with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State among those leading the way.

"Most of the guys making the big money would be doing it for peanuts because they love to coach,” said Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. "But it's nice now that they're able to do what they love to do and be compensated.”

In just the last three years, assistant coaching salaries in the Big 12 have risen by almost 37 percent.

It makes sense, I imagine that college football is just making more and more money and the bottom tiers of it had to eventually be brought up with everything else. I wonder if the salaries that are going up the highest are the ones with the best recruiting abilities with actual coaching skill being negligible (of course that doesn't mean recruiting and coaching are mutually exclusive they're probably intertwined). At the minimum recruiting is the easiest direct effect of a coach to measure whereas coaching seems a bit more ambiguous.

salaries are higher, but job security is probably a lot less these days than when Grant Teaff was coaching.

The salaries for our assistant coaches need to skyrocket.

Specifically Hagan and Cabral. DH isn't happy about how low his salary is vs. the other coaches, and I don't blame him one bit. I would suspect Cabral is the same way, although he's $50k over DH.

Why don´t you post the numbers?

Found them on AZ´s site

Coordinators:
Offensive Coordinator/Quarterback - Mark Helfrich $217,776
Defensive Coordinator - Ronald Collins $217,776

Assistant Head coaches:
Assistant Head Coach/Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line - Jeffrey Grimes $206,887
Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers - Brian Cabral $136,110

Special assignments:
Special teams/Tight ends - Kent Riddle $195,998
Passing Game Coordinator/Wide Receivers - Eric Kiesau $194,910

Position coaches only:
Defensive backs - Greg Brown $143,963
Defensive line - Romeo Bandison $136,110
Running backs - Darian Hagan $92,555

I find it interesting that the two lowest paid coaches are holdovers from barnetts staff.

DH is low on the payscale but given his experience relative to other coaches he is pretty well paid. He only started coaching 3 years ago, I doubt he could go many places and get that kind of compensation.

10 highest paid Big 12 Assistants ... just for comparison

1. Greg Davis Texas off. coordinator $425,000
1. Will Muschamp Texas def. coordinator $425,000
3. Joe Kines A&M def. coordinator $400,000
4. Nolan Cromwell A&M off. coordinator $330,000
5. Joe DeForest OSU special teams $319,000
6. Brent Venables OU def. coordinator $315,000
7. Tim Beckman OSU def. coordinator $303,000
8. Shawn Watson Neb. off. coordinator $300,000
8. Duane Akina Texas defensive backs $300,000
9. Ruffin McNeil Tech def. coordinator $290,000

True, but Cabral? The guy is only one of the best LB coaches in the country and is THE reason CU gets Polynesian kids and kids from the islands. Personally I would expect a ~$50k raise to each. Get Cabral up to where the other guys are and DH gets a big bump with more to come if he keeps getting better as a coach and keeps bringing in the big recruits.

I agree with you on Cabral, but most people with Hagan's exp. just finished being Graduate assistants and are lucky to make what 40k?

Maybe Cabral got a pay rise when he was promoted to AHC and the numbers in the Post were for the 07 season?

Cabral & Hagan need to be paid better than that, but I suspect there are other forms of compensation that these guys receive. I don't know anything specific, just a gut instinct that there is additional revenue someplace. I could be totally wrong on that.

The numbers were for 2007, so we'll have to wait and see if Hawk took care of them for 2008. That was effective July 1. I don't know when they'll be released to the public. I hope Hawk took care of them before he took his $200k bump.

Two things really stand out: special teams at OSU higher than their own Defensive Coordinator??? You gotta get REAL good field position to justify that! And Shawn Watson, 'nuff said.

One source, although maybe minor, is travel. I know my per diem is usually more than I spend, and as much as these guys travel, it adds up.

I heard once that it's pretty common for the Head coach to take part of his bonus (the incentive parts...make the B12 CCG=$$$, make a BCS game=$$$) and divide it up among his staff. I have no idea if Hawk does that but it may be one of the "other" sources of income Sachy was referring to.

He recruits another five star to CU and he will get much more than that from many other schools, IMO.
