The 2021-2022 Coaching Carousel

I can see USC going independent too. I hope USC stays, but I don’t see it as a certainty.

Independence is a hindrance to competing for a national championship
I think if they move to 8 or 12, then USC going independent would be a wash for them. They would probably have the same chance at making the playoff via an at large bid vs a conference champ autobid. But the money could be better so I could see it both ways

ND has been in the playoffs more than any team in the P12. Your argument is a bad one.
They made it last year when they were part of a conference, went 10-0 and played in the ACC CG. They made it in 2018 when they went 12-0 in the regular season.

So yes, if you go undefeated in the regular season as an independent, you have a good shot. Being part of a conference is an easier path and gives teams more room for error.

They weren’t in the conference. They were affiliated with the conference as a matter of convenience in a bizzaro world timeline. They’ve had a shot at the title more than any P12 team. Being in this conference does not mean what you think it does.

Oregon at 12-1 would have been a lock for the CFP this year over an 11-1 ND. Being in ANY P5 conference is an advantage over being independent. It’s really not up for debate.

Oklahoma is rat ****ed. By moving to USC Riley is telling the whole world that OU is not willing to commit to build an SEC championship program. OU is going to take such a massive step down in coaching quality. This coaching change happening simultaneously with a move to the SEC is going to set OU back years, maybe decades. OU could become the new Arkansas.
Let’s see who they get as their next coach before going off the deep end with these takes. OU is still a top 10 job.

Except for the fact that the P12 winner has been in the playoffs fewer times than Notre Dame. It’s not really up for debate. This conference is the red headed step-child.

That’s because the Pac 12 hasn’t had a 12-1 or better program in any year ND has been able to make the playoff. Playing a 13th game against a good opponent (Conference Championship Game) is an advantage over only playing 12 games. There is no debate about that.

Since you refuse to have the same debate, I’m done. Have a good evening

Great move for SC. And great move for Riley. Winning a national championship at SC seems much more likely for him than doing it at OU in the SEC.

When has a 1-loss Pac12 champ missed the playoff? I don't believe it has happened.

And yes a 1-loss Oregon would've gotten into the CFP this year before ND. ND needs help get into the playoff this year

Its why the Big 12 went back to a conference championship game. It’s clear to everyone

OU has Bobby Stoops coming out of retirement to be the interim HC to coach the OU bowl game. I'll bet they will press him hard to step back in as the fulltime HC for the next couple of years.

USC is not Notre Dame. They wouldn’t be able to sign a comparable deal to televise their home football games. They are not going to walk away from playing UCLA and Stanford in football and basketball. There’s no ACC to take their water polo, etc. teams.

Sure, I could see the idiot money men from USC going independent—it would be a mistake.

That said, I hope the current Pac-12 commish understands that making USC, Oregon, Washington and UCLA happy is the job - not making Stanford, Cal, OSU & WSU happy like the last guy thought.

How much happier can they get? Arizona and Colorado in their division and yearly games against Cal and Stanford—seems pretty sweet. I mean aside from their basketball team being a wholly owned subsidiary of TadCo, obviously.
