Official realignment thread - SEC formally invites OU and Texas to join the conference in 2025

I was thinking selfishly of travel destinations I would kind of like for Pac-12 expansion to 16.

UH, TCU, UNLV & SDSU

That's the big metros in the West where we don't have a direct conference presence. So maybe it would make financial sense and recruiting sense?

What in the hell is wrong with you? 2 out of 4 are decent travel destinations. The other two suck donkey ass. They're not as bad as Stillwater, Lubbock, Manhattan and Lincoln, but that's a pretty low bar to clear.

There are going to be a number of P5 teams with 3 conference wins in bowl games because they played 3-4 patsies in non-conference play. That’s rediculous

If CU had scheduled CSU & UNM instead of aTm & Minn, we'd be preparing for a bowl game right now. And that's with the Pac-12 playing 9 conference games.

Look at Alabama this year. 8 conference games + Miami for 9 P5 opponents. Then they play Mercer, Southern Miss & NM State. Compare that with USC playing 9 conference games + Notre Dame as their base schedule. They then played San Jose St & BYU, so an easier schedule than their usual of adding someone like Texas.

I think their was a reason -- lack of P5-caliber OOC teams to play in-region.
I think that they had everyone play everyone when it was the Pac-10. So that was their norm. And Larry Scott needed content to justify 6 regional P12 networks in addition to the national at the time they were deciding this stuff.

On the network, I think we'd all be happy with a Pac1, a Pac2 and an app to stream anything that didn't make a network (and to watch on-demand content).

Check the subject line of this thread.
ACK.

but most posters here, including me, expect the departure to happen sooner than that.

I don't think the XII releasing this schedule guarantees those schools will be around for 2022, but I think it's a strong indicator; the XII wouldn't relapse a schedule this early if it was likely to turn into another source of embarrassment for them.

That's a pretty good article explaining why 2025 is very likely to stay as is.

you, and the author of the yahoo! piece, may be right. but i'll re-iterate what I've been saying for a decade -- I'll be convinced these conference GoR's are meaningful after they've been tested in court. Until that happens, I'm not completely convinced they are all that "binding".

I suspect the conferences do not want to find out if their GoR's will survive a legal battle. My prediction is that the XII GoR won't be tested either, and that OU, TX and the XII will negotiate something for an exit after next year.

but I very well could be wrong on all this.

The Big 12 has zero incentive to let OU and UT out of their contracts early as their TV payments will go down. OU and UT don't want to pay a combined $150M to leave early.

I suspect, unless one believes the GoR is going to go up in flames in court and I don't know why it would - a contract is a contract, 2025 it is.

The ACC wanted $52M from Maryland. They went to court and settled for $31M. For that amount of money that OU & UT would have to pay, I'd say that ends up in court.
