Top games for 2008

Unleash Hell

Well-Known Member
I do this every year around now as I get antsy for the season to start. I look at all the games being played in the 2008 college football season and try to make a list of the top games by week through the season. Keep in mind this is all my opinion, and there will probably be some that people don't agree with, it's just what interests me as a buffs and college football fan.

August/September
Week 1
1. Colorado vs. Colorado St. RMS, Last ten years has usually been a good game, is it time for a statement game for Buffs?

2. Missouri vs. Illinois. I actually think see this as a big upset alert. Wouldn't surprise me to see the Illini beat Mizzou.

3. Clemson vs. Alabama. Clemson is picked by most to win ACC with their powerful running game, will Saban have Bama ready for a run at the SEC?

4. Tennessee @ UCLA. Neuhesiel's first game coaching his Alma Mater.

5. Appalachian St. @ LSU. Can Appy state shock the world again? Will be a tough task to knock off the defending champs in the Bayou.

5 Laughers
Chattanooga @ Oklahoma. Go easy on em Stoops!
Charleston Southern @ Miami, FL. I didn't think the U played these types of schools
Villanova @ West Virginia. I thought Nova just played basketball
Youngstown St @ Ohio St. What Tressel wants to pick on his old team?
Coastal Carolina @ Penn St. Coast of what Carolina, south? north?

Week 2 (A blah week, nothing much going on)
1. E. Washington @ Colorado. Everybody remembers last time buffs played AA team.

2. Miami, Fl @ Florida. Big rivalry, Florida has dominated lately.

3. Oregon @ Purdue. Yep, thats the best I could come up with for #3.

4. Oregon St. @ Penn St. Beavers going to play in Beaver stadium.

5. Georgia Tech @ Boston College. BC was a surprise last year, GT is usually a solid team, could be a good game.

5 laughers.
SE Missouri @ Missouri. Might be nearing the type of rivalry of Alabama/Auburn, or Florida/Florida St.
Montana St. @ Kansas St. Who the hell is Montana state? pssh, oh wait, nevermind.
Furman @ Virginia Tech. Furman? Ehh?
Richmond @ Virginia. Fear the Spideys of Richmond!
Ohio @ Ohio St. See SE Mizzou @ Mizzou comment.

Week 3
1. Ohio St. @ USC. Could have national title implications.

2. Kansas @ South Florida. KU better watch out down here.

3. Michigan @ Notre Dame. Last year it was to find out who sucked more.

4. Arkansas @ Texas. Would have been better if McFadden were still around.

5. North Carolina @Rutgers. Two programs on the rise.

3 laughers (hey less WTF type games!!)
Samford @ Mississippi. Stanford? Oh no, SAMford!
Missouri St. @ Oklahoma St. Well the cowboys should be able to beat one team from MIssouri this year.
Chattanooga @ Florida St. What, Oklahoma wasn't enough for you Chattanooga?

Week 4
1.West Virginia @ Colorado. Good time for buffs to show nation they’re on the way back.

2.LSU @ Auburn. Always a good one, will have SEC west implications.

3.Georgia @ Arizona St. ASU looked good under Erickson last year, Georgia could be primed for a title run.

4.Florida @ Tennessee. Big rivalry, Vols looking for payback from last years embarrassing loss to Gators.

5.Miami, Fla @ Texas A&M. Canes won last year, now they have to travel to 12th man country.

5 Laughers
Wofford @ South Carolina. Spurrier might be able to get back to his old ways of running up the score.
Sam Houston St. @ Kansas. KU needs a W after a probable loss to USF.
South Carolina St. @ Clemson. Is it as big a rivalry as SC and Clemson?
Buffalo @ Missouri. Chase will get to throw up some Heisman numbers in this one.
Rice @ Texas. Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the moon!

Week 5
1.Colorado @ Florida St. Is third time a charm for Buffs in the 3rd matchup between these two teams in the last 6 years?

2.Tennessee @ Auburn. SEC always has good games.

3.Virginia Tech @ Nebraska. Does Bo get his first big game win here?

4.Wisconsin @ Michigan. Badgers have taken Michigans role as second to Ohio St, can Wolverines regain it?

5.Alabama @ Georgia. Another good SEC matchup.

3 Laughers
Rhode Island @ Boston College. Didn’t know Rhode Island had a football team.
Morgan St. @ Rutgers. Where is Morgan St?
Weber St. @ Utah. Big In-state rivalry!

October
Week 6

1.Texas @ Colorado. This might be a little rivalry in the making. CU wants revenge for 70-3 beatdown in ’05, Texas is bitter about CU getting Darrell Scott.

2.Florida St. @ Miami. Both programs are not what they used to be, but this is still one of the best rivalries in sports.

3.Ohio St. @ Wisconsin. Game could decide Big 10 title.

4.Oregon @ USC. USC barely hung on last year.

5.Missouri @ Nebraska. Big time statement game for the huskers.

A laugher
Western Kentucky @ Virginia Tech. Hey the Hilltopers are coming to 1A next year!

Week 7
1.Colorado @ Kansas. Buffs have always struggled in Lawrence, now it will be evenharder with KU being good.

2.Oklahoma vs. Texas. The RRS, one of the most bitter rivalries in college football.

3.LSU @ Florida. Champs from the past two years meet up.

4.Arizona St. @ USC. Should be an interesting game now that ASU is on rise.

5.UCLA @ Oregon. Duck fans don’t like Neuhesiel from his ways with them while coaching Colorado and Washington. Maybe Ricky will go for the fake while he’s up by 30 in the 4th!

A laugher
Gardner-Webb @ Georgia Tech. Seriously?

Week 8
1.Kansas St. @ Colorado. Hawkins has yet to have a good performance vs. the wildcats. Is this the time?

2.Missouri @ Texas. Can Mizzou break through and beat a South power?

3.Kansas @ Oklahoma. Kansas avoided UT and OU last year, now they get both. Here’s round 1.

4.LSU @ South Carolina. Cocks are primed to have a good season.

5.Michigan @ Penn St. Used to be a classic matchup.

Week 9
1.Colorado @ Missouri. Mizzou embarrassed buffs in Boulder last year.

2.Georgia @ LSU. Two SEC powers meet up in the Bayou.

3.Auburn @ West Virginia. Another great Thursday night matchup.

4.Virginia Tech @ Florida St. National title game rematch from 1999.

5.Texas Tech @ Kansas. Believe it or not, this could be a Big 12 title game preview.

November/December
Week 10
1.Colorado @ Texas A&M. Aggies always seem to struggle against the Buffs.

2.Georgia vs. Florida. Worlds largest cocktail party. Gators bitter about last years TD celebration from entire Georgia team in end zone.

4.Texas @ Texas Tech. Tech’s opportunity to pass Texas.

5.Kansas St. @ Kansas. Can KU make it three in a row over hated wildcats?

5.Texas Tech @ Oklahoma. Could decide Big 12 south.

Laughers
The Citadel @ Florida. What?
Cal-Poly @ Wisconsin. Is this a warmup for Badgers bowl game?

Week 14 (Rivalry week, I will list all major rivalries for this week)

Week 15
1.Big 12 Championship. Hopefully it’s Colorado representing the North.
2.SEC Championship. Winner will likely play for national title.
3.ACC Championship. This conference is not what it used to be.
4.USC @ UCLA. Bruins stunned inner city rivals last year.
5.Arizona @ Arizona St. Devils have won last 3 meetings.

Good stuff Unleash. I think the game of the year could end up being Florida-Georgia in Jacksonville. I also look forward to the Bama-LSU game.

Two very minor corrections-USC lost to Oregon and beat UCLA.

The worst of the loss to texass was the cheap shot Klatt took at the end - I think ut was over 60 at the time. We can count on ut-ass to play below their talent level, so the question is whether we play well enough to get KLATT'S REVENGE!!

The true revenge opportunity is in 2009 in their house infront of their home crowd.

Wow, that's a lot of information, nice job! Obviously the CU game is always the biggest as far as we're concerned, but nationally I'd have to put the Clemson-Bama game as the top game nationally that first weekend. Clemson is loaded this season and has the schedule to make a serious MNC run, but can they finally avoid losing games they shouldn't? Not that Bama is any gimme, that's for sure, and this game will have a BCS-bowl-like atmosphere.

"4.Texas @ Texas Tech. Tech’s opportunity to pass Texas."

Tech's opportunity to pass Texas? Seriously? Even if Texas loses this game how would that be Tech passing us? Is it because of how many years in a row they have won 10 games? Is it because they have been contenders in the Big 12? Is it because they have won a National Championship in this decade? Oh wait, no it couldn't be those because they haven't done any of those things.

Tech is and will be what they have always been...a one trick pony that can't stop the run. It is that simple...if you can run the ball, you can beat Tech...yeah they usually take one they shouldn't win and lose a couple they should win but that is what makes them a second tier team at best. Now, I will say that we usually lose a game in Lubbock every 6 to 8 years and we are due. However, our all time record vs Tech is 43-14 so I doubt one game (if we lose) will be the passing of the torch.

I agree. I have no idea where the Tech leg humping is coming from.

No, but Tech does have 15 straight non losing seasons and is the only member of the Big 12 with 13 straight winning seasons. Say what you want about Tech, but they are primed to have a great year. Their offense is off the charts with Graham Harrel and Michal Crabtree. I would rate Harrel as one of the top 5 QB's in the country and Crabtree as the top WR in the country. Their schedule sets up nicely to have a great chance at being 8-0 when Texas comes to town. By then that game will be huge and Tech will have a great chance at beating Texas. Texas meanwhile will not be what they have been the last several years. I look for 3-4 losses for the Longhorns this year.

Florida Atlantic W
@ UTEP W
Arkansas W
Rice W
@ COlorado tossup
Oklahoma L
Missouri L
Oklahoma St. W
@ Texas Tech tossup
Baylor W
@ Kansas tossup
Texas A&M W

I completely agree that we could have 3-4 losses...or we could only have 1. Who knows...but what has Tech ever really done to deserve the hype they are getting? Harrell, is only considered a top 5 QB because of the system he is in...my gradmother could pass for 3,000 yards in that system. Defense wins championships and they still haven't proven that they can play on both sides of the ball. Unless you are talking when they beat OU last year!

BTW, I don't think Tech is going to pass Texas for good. I just think for this season Tech has a good chance at beating Texas and finishing 2nd in the south. I agree about the system. And it's not all because of Tech, I just think Texas will have a "down" year this year.

Just to be fair alot of people thought we had a down year last year too...and we won 10 games....I would take that!

A little overly-sensitive to one comment in a huge post...

A little overly-sensitive to one comment in a huge post...

And we know hyper-sensitive as we post any and all comments made by the most lowly ill-informed sports writers that dare to suppest that NU may be better than last year or might be better than the Buffs.....

and then rip them as stupid. As if 'Sports Writer' didn't already make that apparent.
