Newcomers making impacts in 2008

Unleash Hell

Last year the newcomers who saw significant playing time were, Josh Smith, Cody Hawkins, Ryan Miller and Kendrick Celestine, and *gulp* Kai Maiva.

Who do you see making an impact this year?

From incomers, I think Scott, Mariner, Stewart, Deehan, Wallace, and Mohler stand a good chance at seeing significant time. Players that should see some time are: Polk (maybe redshirt), Major, Blackmon, Hicks.

Players that redshirted last year that we should see a lot are: Obi, Hudgins, Sipili, and Wright.

Thoughts?

He's the difference between a good oline, and a great oline. Our guard spot is very, very suspect.

If it doesn't happen this season, I think 09 could be our most dominant O-line since 2001, maybe better.

BTW, is MTM 100%? Didn't he not play as a senior in HS?

111%. He's cranked it up.

Okay Nigel.

On defense, I think Mohler will have an impact, and Hicks and Major have an outside shot at some PT. On offense, one of the 3 TE's (whoever steps up), and either Scott or Polk (whoever learns to pass block first). ST - Stewart; I think he's gonna see the field and we're all gonna enjoy watching him.

JMHO, the rest of the newcomers should be redshirted, including MTM. Give them all a year to learn the systems and get bigger/stronger. In MTM's case, it adds some extra time to make absolutely certain that the knee is healed - then he's on his way to all-world (yes, I think he's that good).

From last years redshirt class: Defense will be boosted by the DE's, Obi, Hudgins, and Shields (last time I checked, he was listed here). Sipili and Wright will see time, but don't count out Perkins. On offense, Bahr, Behrens, Iltis, and maybe Adkins - all have a shot at some PT. Hope they make the best of their chances.

One other roster move I liked - moving Jason Brace back to the outside. I'm not sure he could put and keep on the extra 20 lbs needed to play DT. He played DE in HS, so I think this is gonna work out.

Scott WILL see plenty of PT this year barring any injury. He is too big of a talent to sit. He's one of those types of players who you almost don't have to coach, you just say get out there and take the ball when the QB gives it to you. He will know what to do with the rest.

I have no doubts that he knows exactly what to do when he's got the ball. It's the plays when he doesn't have the ball that will determine his early playing time, and this is true of all young RB's. They must be able to execute the correct blocks in the passing game, and that is what he, and the other youngsters, will have to learn.

I hope they all learn quickly.

Had Simas not decided that grades were of no consiquence, he would have had my vote. So for now, besides Scott & Polk, it's to early to tell.

So I saw Jon Major for the first time since this party in mid June, and damn he's been hitting the weights. All he does is workout/football and play xbox cause hes on everytime I get on. I hope he gets solid playingtime. So I can say to the person next to me at the game and say "Yeah I destroyed him in Halo no big deal"

Do you have a man crush on Jon Major?

There is a little bit of a logjam at LB right now. Would be nice if we could redshirt all the freshman LBs.

As for MTM, I would like to see him redshirt. Kai and Miller didn't see time until the 4th game or so. MTM hasn't played in over a year, so I expect it will take some time for him to get his game legs back. I'd hate to see him burn his redshirt for PT in a couple of games when we have several guys at guard who are ready to show us what they got - Barr, Iltis, Berhens. Heck, even Head has another year under his belt.

the only way I see MTM playing is if he comes out gang-busters, and the others are just plain busts.

Imo the guard spot is up in the air for anyone. The only person who i think did anything during the spring was Devin Head. And even he didn't really lock down the guard spot like we wanted to see. Everything is still very wide open going into the fall. At least imo.

With Faatagi done for good, MTM has a shot to see some playing time. But I'm with beltway, I would like to see him redshirted if possible.

Hudgins was one I was gonna mention, I read he had 19 sacks in JC in 2006, although he seems a bit undersized.
