Running out of the shotgun, good or bad?

It seems to me,when running from the shotgun position (2 backs on each side of cody)the running backs don't get any momentum or speed built up when hitting the hole or line. They are already back what 5-8 yds?

What are your thoughts,do you prefer the tradional rb/fb set or out of the shotgun and do you think cu will run some traditional sets from time to time?

watch WVU's running plays, their backs hit the hole so fast, it's all about properly teaching your RBs on how to run out of the shotgun.

It has its place when you have the right personnel and can also pass very effectively out of the shotgun. Utah with Alex Smith ran it very well.

Running out of the shotgun requires the line to hold it's blocks just a little longer. Any penetration, and the play is blown up. The upside is that the back has an extra half second to find the hole, which may not have been there before. It's like running every run as a draw play. It has it's advantages and it's disadvantages.

That's correct and I'm wondering if thiSs doesn't hinder the running game a bit.

I think you have a solid point for bigger backs like Scott and Sumler I dont see the point, but a shotgun draw to someone like Noel Divine (or cross your fingers Stewart) makes some sense.

I think we are gonna have to deal with it for now. Left/Right running is not effected (in fact, I think it is helped), but our North/South running was NOT impressive during the scrimmage.

Hopefully the backs will get used to it as time goes on. Also, when these young guys start to pick up blocks and get a hold of the offense, soon we will have backfields where it is Scott/polk or Speedy. That is going to be AWESOME

Keep in mind during the scrimmage anything between the tackles is going right at Hypo and Nicholas, one of which could be a first round pick.

agreed which is why I am not panicking. Also, Curtis Cunningham had a great game on our #2 D and our guards are not set.

Yeah i am keeping my head in the sand about the guard issues, but thats a good point too.

Teams that do a lot of running out of the shotgun usually have some sort of option element to their offense. Last time I checked, Cody doesn't have great speed.

Cody may not have a lot of speed, but if we can run at all out of the shotgun he is pretty effective on the bootleg finding a TE on a drag or a WR on an out.

It makes for an easier hand-off since qb and rb are not in motion. With a qb under center, the rb is moving but not at full speed until he gets the ball (generally, just before hitting the line). From the shotgun, the rb gets the ball earlier and can pick a hole. This also is a drawback since it is tougher for the blockers. In a "blast" play with the qb under center, the line knows the hole the rb is going to. Runs out of shotgun also lead to TFL when there is a lot of penetration.

I like the idea of the Buffs using the shotgun once in a while, but not as a regular part of the game plan. I'm sure Cody can see over the O-line better in that formation.

Texas seems to do all right with it.

The shotgun is good for Cody being a shorter QB it gives him an extra second to make his reads. Running out of shotgun will only work for us in obvious passing situations. To have a consistent running game in the shotgun like Texas used to do you need a running QB, VY was kinda good at this. The reason for this is the running play needs to be a QB/RB option where the QB makes the read and decides to hand-off or not. This play keeps the defense on their heels because they can't commit, if its a straight hand-off the defense has a lot of time to make the read and blow up the play. Cody doesn't quite have the running ability of VY, so agree that the shotgun should not be the main feature of our offense.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the basic zone-read play from the shotgun.

It seems like I read where the staff had always wanted to employ the spread offense and now they feel they finally have the personnel to do so.

Granted, Cody is no VY, but if he can get 4-6 yards each time he runs the read, it can still be effective. It would keep the back-side defensive end from crashing down on the handoff to the RB. Cody may not be a threat to break a big gainer, but if he can get positive yardage and it helps to keep the chains moving, then it has the same kind of effect on the D that a power running game has. Keep possession, keep their D on the field, let the physical o-line wear 'em out, and set up the play action passes.

Hmm... Do we really want Cody as a major carrier in our power running game?

no. But he doesn't need to be. The threat of passing is just as good as the threat of running. As long as the QB can advance the ball, the defense must respect both options, leading to hesitation on the defensive side. They can't commit to a run to the left side of the field at teh same time as a pass to the right. And from what I saw, Cody is good for a scramble every now and then anyways. Who do you cover, Darrel scott on the handoff or Jfly on the go route? Good luck D's! (not :smile2:)

i want to take a class in football offense and defense mechanics.
I would suggest reading www.maddenmania.com. Also, playing NCAA (or madden) a lot really does give you basic ideas on how defenses work. This is definitely not anywhere near a real education on football, but it is FUN and is better then nothing for us outsiders who are unable to pay for coaching classes!

Is it sad that I know the difference between a cover 2 and a cover 3 from NCAA? yes. Is it awesome to recognize wtf is going on at a Buffs game? ****in A it is.
