CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

The PAC 10, as currently constructed, is very much like what I want from a conference affiliation. Ten schools in the same part of the country with a similar take on the role of college athletics. I hope we can make this work. Greed will likely kill it off eventually.
If I’m RG (forget Phil, he can’t figure out how to tie his shoes), I’m trying to figure out a short and long term strategy for survival. The long term strategy could include a dramatically scaled back football program. That’s a reality that I think we all should be ready to accept.

I would love to see it work. I can't see Phil and Oregon being content with their lot.

Me too!!!! Out weasel the weasels!!

But I have the sense that RG would be more transparent with the league than UO and UW would be.
There’s a difference between being transparent with your peers and being transparent with the public. All schools should be saying the same thing publicly. And RG should be fired if he doesn’t have a pulse on what the other schools are doing / saying privately.

Yep. What I want and what I’m likely to get are two very different things. Still, with all the talk about how disinterested many of us have become, I can see a scenario where my interest is increased. And they really don’t have to do anything other than leave things exactly the way they are.

Because they’re the two most likely to commit to the conference and bolt in the middle of the night?
No different than the other 8 in their belief system, only in their value & potential options. When any Pac configuration which pays more than MWC or AAC is your best situation, and only option for achieving that revenue, you care a lot more tradition and unity. USC would have been preaching tradition and unity if the Pac could have paid them market value.

Good rant from Russilo starting at 11 minutes here. Goes program by program that have been involved in realignment over the past 30 years or so and asks if any fanbases have actually been happy. Conclusion is that Utah is the only one that probably is.

This is exactly what I was thinking about over the weekend.

If you go as far back as the 90s, there were a few major rounds

  • Big East/SEC expands (1991)
    • Big East Adds WVU, Temple, Miami, Rutgers, VT
    • Arky goes to SEC
  • Indies join conferences
    • FSU to ACC (1992)
    • Penn State to B1G (1991)
    • South Carolina to SEC (1992)
  • SWC dissolves (1996):
    • UT, OU, OSU, Tech, Baylor, A&M to Big XII
  • ACC poaches Big East (2005)
    • Adds Miami, VT, BC
  • Musical Chairs (2011-2012)
    • CU/UU to Pac 12
    • A&M & Mizzou to SEC
    • NU to B1G
    • TCU to Big12
  • Big East implosion (2012-2014)
    • WVU to Big12
    • Rutgers, Maryland, to B1G
    • Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville to ACC
  • Big12 Turmoil (2021)
    • OU/UT to SEC
    • Cincinatti, BYU, UCF, Houston to B12
  • Pac12 Problems (2022)
    • UCLA/USC to B1G
    • ???
If you look at all those moves, there are maybe 2-3 where the members are happy:
  • Probably Arky to SEC; it's worked out well for them, they've developed new rivalries and will be adding in some old ones when UT/OU enter the conference
  • FSU has experienced all 3 of their titles as ACC member
  • Penn State has fit in very well in B1G
  • As Hokie stated, VT and the other former Big East members are probably glad to be in the ACC before the conference imploded
  • As Scheck said, TCU and UU are probably glad to be elevated to P5 (at least for a little while)
Everyone else seems miserable.

The problem for the Eastern Independents was that Big East basketball was driving everything.

If, as PSU wanted, they and Miami could have led a full conference with Pitt, Cuse, WVU, Cincy, BC, VA Tech, etc. then I think it would have been better for them all and we wouldn't have seen so much realignment/ expansion.

I think it's a real possibility that B1G and SEC expansion is over for the foreseeable future, meaning the next decade. The B1G is about to lock in with Fox until 2034, the SEC is in with ESPN until 2034, ACC is locked in with ESPN until 2036, and I'm willing to bet whatever happens with Pac10/Big12, they will also get locked in until about the same time.

The B1G and SEC programs are about to make around $100m/program/year. The other 3 are likely going to make somewhere around $30-$35m/year/program over the same time frame.

To put this in perspective, right now the B1G distributes around $54m/program, so they had about $10-$20m advantage per school, depending on which conference you're comparing (Big 12 distributed around $45m/school with Texas and OU). In 2 years, that disparity is going to grow to something like $50m on the absolute low end, to more than likely around $70m, per school, each year. That's $700m more that Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Miss State, etc will be making compared to Clemson, FSU, Miami, Oregon, Washington, UNC, UVA, etc. over the media rights contract timeframe.

The fallout with recruiting and competitiveness between the those two leagues and the other three is going to be enormous, particularly when you consider the NIL era is just getting ramped up.

I’m still happy with the move from the big12 to the Pac-12. It’s not like being in the big12 is a better situation right now and CU’s demise was coming irrespective of the move. Admittedly it’s mostly selfish because I like seeing the Buffs on the west coast but I just don’t see us being significantly less miserable had we stayed.

Something needed to pay for all of my frustration @ 6:20 am...it was a 140 lb pig @125 yds one and done and I feel a hell of a lot better.
@13Buff ....I thought I could get two not enough suppressor...I was set up on my balcony in briefs clean shot just dropped...LOL listening to Roy Orbison...sucked I had to get dressed for a pic...it was 83 already.

not much happening other than the remainder of the Pac 10 ADs are planning their summer wine mixer

I hope we’re doing the same.

and CU wouldn't do the same if given the opportunity ?

I mean, you guys aren't wrong, but if UO and UW did indeed get the stiff arm from the Big Ten, then actually we are in a better position (as of right now), than they are.

We know we're not getting a ticket to the big leagues, but we have a nice cushy (relatively speaking) landing spot in the Big 12. Perhaps UO and UW have that opportunity as well, but they're not giving up their dreams of the Big Ten. If we bolted today, we'd probably better off than staying in the Pac 10 and hoping it all works (hence my angst). But if the MTZ 4 did leave, UO and UW would have to make a decision. Try to make independent work and stay hopeful for a Big Ten invite in the next couple of years, go to the MWC and do the same, or go to the Big 12 and probably be forced to sign a big fat GOR.

So in that sense, UO and UW need us way more than we need them right now, which is probably why they're right there with the other PTZ schools signing kumbaya and telling the MTZ schools how much they want us to stay.

The leverage the MTZ schools have right now is to be able to say that the days of other Pac-10 members blackballing potential expansion targets due to not fitting some profile of academic prestige are over if they want us to stay.

If someone like SDSU or FSU brings value, Cal can stfu about the politics of the UC vs Cal State systems.

If someone like UNLV or OkSt brings value, we shouldn't put up with their noses being up in the air with "glorified commuter school" or "agg focused".

If someone like TTU or AFA brings value, they can stuff any talk about political leanings of the school or community.

If it's TCU or SMU that bring value, religious affiliation is no longer an issue.

If it's UH or anyone East of them that brings value, there will be no stopping it over travel when CA & NJ are in the B1G, UT & FL are in the Big 12, and OK & FL are in the SEC.

Etc. Except for fvck Baylor. That's still a thing.

...not a firm conclusion there were a few seasons where I would wager CU might've gone bowling as a member of the B12. The B12 N was always good to the Buffs.
