Will Polk Redshirt?

I read where Hagan says that would be preferable, and that Polk said he'd rather not, but would do it for the team.

Thoughts?

I'm of the opinion that I'd rather have him play this year. I think that by the end of the year, he and Scott will be the best two running backs on the team. Having that combo running the ball late in the season could be devastating for opposing defenses.

Sumler, Lockridge, Moyd, Scott, Polk, Stewart --- that's 6 RB's.

I say redshirt EVERY true freshman on the team unless they are going to CONTRIBUTE to this team. (i.e. be in on 100+ plays this season)

Burning a redshirt so Polk or Scott or Stewart or whoever can get 15 carries this season is a complete and total waste, imo.

Redshirt. As Slade says, we have a ton of RBs on the team and none of them are graduating this year. We need some spacing.

definately agreed....we have too many RB's and of the 3 freshman, Polk has got to be the odd man out because Scott is so hyped and Stewart brings so many other weapons/options to the table that he'll be in a lot of different situations (I would hope)

I've always been a big fan of RSing the freshies. I think Polk would benefit greatly.

I've been accused of being a homer, BUT...

There's no doubt in my mind that if Polk redshirts that he'll win the Heisman his fifth year. Scott will win the three Heisman's prior. It all seems completely reasonable to me...bulletproof.

He should. Like someone else said if Scott lives up to potential he will be gone by his Junior year which would give Polk 2 years to run the show.

If Polk can be convinced it's a good idea I think it would be great. However, he doesn't sound to enthused by the idea.

I like the cut of your jib.

not only that, but though in the long-term a big couple years from Scott will *help* CU recruit RB's but in the short term (like next year's class and possibly the one after) it will be tough for Hawk to recruit equal or above a very good, highly recruited guy like Polk who would be one of the stars of many previous classes.

but, like others say, Ray doesn't seem to hot on the idea according to the paper and wanted to play on special teams...which is an attitude to respect.

I view this entirely differently. I think we put the best players on the field, regardless of class. If Polk is better than Sumler and Moyd, he needs to be playing. If not, then I agree he should be redshirted. But it is my suspicion that by the end of the year, Polk will be playing at a higher level than the other two.

Lockridge, with his hernia, would be a better choice for a RS, IMO.

Too early for me to say. If Ray-Ray earns the chance to play, get him on the field.

Has Coach Hagan really seen enough based on training camp?

As a fan, I'd like Polk on the sidelines strapped in ready to challenge Sumler, Scott and Stewart. The RS label on a healthy kid could be a demotivator. Use the RS as an insurance policy against injury.

I see this from the opposite perspective - new recruits will see Scott playing and Polk waiting in the wings.

I agree with this - play the best, and I think Scott and Polk will end up being at the top of the charts.

I like the RS route for Polk. I don't think he's gonna get as much pt as Scott on offense nor as much Slot/special teams time as Speedy. And if the Lockridge is still hurting a couple of games into the season, RS him too.

Next year, we'd have Moyd - Sr, Sumler - Jr, Scott & Speedy - Soph's, and Polk and Lockridge as RS-Fr. Nice balance across the classes.

So far Polk has been kind of struggling in my view. He's had a tough time with swing passes and catching the ball in general. This is not a attempt to say he isn't any good. He shows flashes of brilliance out there. Very shifty, Decent vision(for a frosh), great speed and accelleration. But he doesn't seem to be ready imo. Maybe i'm wrong, but i don't think he's better right now than Stewart or Scott. He's still a fresman. Give him time to learn the system with a RS year would be great for Ray Ray.

what i'm saying is that as long as Scott is here, i don't think we'll recruit above Polk. So there is some logic to the argument to get an extra year for Polk which gives him probably 2 years. in the long run, a successful running game and putting backs in the NFL will be very beneficial to the program. in the short term, you have Scott and a 4 star type guy in Polk. build the running game, and guys will want to tote the rock for the Buffs.

Highly rated recruits aren't afraid of competition. These kids are very confident in their abilities. As they should be. I don't want a kid if he's afraid of competition. Look at Polk. He's confident even with Darrell Scott at CU. It never really affected his decision in any way.

Polk knew we were recruiting DS, and it never swayed him one iota. He welcomed the competition. There are others with the same attitude - and, yes, before anyone jumps my ****, there are those who want the starting job handed to them on a silver platter.

There will be good players who will commit to a college regardless of who is currently on the roster.

Do we really want someone who's afraid of competition? Talent wants to play with talent. It raises their game. And most competent athletes are aware of this fact. CU will continue go after top RB recruits.

What you say holds some truth, but calling it fear of competition is a little harsh, I think. There are only so many carries to go around, and it's part of the calculation when picking among many good offers. I guess I've assumed that having Scott and Polk here is one reason we have little chance to recruit, e.g., Yarnway.

Your opinion isn't wrong. Depth certainly plays a factor.

Lockridge played last year, so he would be a RS- Soph. You would be pushing him back into the class with Scott and Speedy.

Can we Trade him to Alabama for 2 big old hog molly's at DT ?:wink2:

End of the Day , It is a nice problem to have quite frankly. I would sell Polk on fact he is best suited as a feature back and that is not happening in next 2 years honestly. He by his third year on Campus can be exactly what he was hoping to be down the line. His hopes most likely are to be a featured running back on a NFL roster. To achieve that goal teams need to have some game film on that.

Ray Polk should be treated as he actually is a true asset and this young man should be commended for his desire but also pointed into what his long term best interests are.

I think it's safe to say that there's a whole lot of good Div 1 teams out their that would love to have the same problem at running back as the Buffs have. Decisions, Decisions???

I've got to go with Sacky's side of this. This kid came to play. Not sit. If he can beat out Moyd and or Sumler then hey the spot is his. I'd even let him play Special Teams if he is good enough to start there. Having your best on the field means wins and according to the popular thought on this board wins mean better recruiting classes. If he can win a starting spot, play him now, we can use the infusion of speed, shifty moves and enthusiasm. Worry about the depth chart once we get back to where we belong nationally.
