Official CU Head Coach Search Thread - Primetime

Calhoun would be an extremely low ceiling hire. He’s never recruited P5 players. How does he convince a recruit he knows how to help him get to the NFL? If the goal is to move from embarrassment to mediocrity and no longer be the worst program in the country then I guess he could do that. The only hire that would be lazier than Calhoun would be keeping Sanford.
Yeah he's Mendenhall without the P5 recruiting experience. High floor, but low ceiling.

Sanford would need to go 4-3 at the absolute minimum to get me to want to give the job to him. Isn't happening.

Mendenhall without the P5 recruiting or coaching experience. That’s a huge difference IMO. Essentially zero P5 experience should be a deal breaker.

And if Sanford goes 7-0 I’d still be pissed if he gets the job.

He could get them a job in a missile silo in North Dakota!

Yeah I'm not even thinking about Sanford as a candidate right now. He's got a two month interview.

What about David Shaw if he gets fired from Stanford... smells like a PD/RG type of hire and wouldn't be the worst one if he was the guy
He won't get fired - he has basically a coach-for-life deal. He'd have to quit and then want to immediately jump back into coaching which is unlikely, he'd probably take a break,

Feels like if it was going to be Herman or Mendenhall that we would have heard something by now. None of the official rumors seem to mention either guy. kind of pisses me off, tbh.

What are the “official rumors” saying?

Listened to the Feldman/Mandel podcast from last Wednesday and they spent a decent amount of time talking about the CU job.

- CU is in a really ****ty spot due to complete rebuild while in the midst of conference instability and basically no recruiting base

- Dorrell is good guy who has never felt like a guy who had “it” as a HC

- Feldman thinks it’s Bienemy’s job if he wants it, although he says that’s just his feeling

- He also thinks if CU offers Calhoun and he thinks CU is committed to winning, he would probably take it

- Feldman listed other candidates of Grimes, Rahne, Choate and Walters and basically says Grimes would be his choice of CU can sell him on the job.

- Says Grimes just exudes “it” with deep Texas ties
No mention of the two guys most of us would like to see.

If Sanford goes 7-0, he should quit coaching because he could never be any better. There would be no room for improvement. He would have reached the pinnacle. He should be DONE. It would be like reaching the end of the internet.

Hey I'm not pushing it, but it does feel like if he could make it work at Stanford he could make it work here....and there are definitely worse options out there. I'd personally be somewhat disappointed if it was Shaw, but again we could do worse
Did he make it work at Stanford? Feels like they haven’t been relevant since Harbaugh recruits were still there

Bielema did interview, that is something I am positive on.
This doesn't scream great interviewee

Good call, forgot about that. I think I’d still prefer Grimes
It’s Monday of game week against Cal and our first victory of the year. Good way to start the week thinking of Grimes leading our Buffs program. Whether it’s him, Choate, Bronco, Herman or anyone else being discussed, it’s a good list… and a good day to be a Buff in my opinion.

Last week in the press conference RG mentioned the process would go through the end of the football season and a couple of days.

I don't know why you keep stumping for Calhoun.

Mendenhall has at least a conference championship (2, actually) and multiple top 25 finishes on his resume. Calhoun has no championships and 1 top 25 finish. I recognize it's probably harder to win at AFA than other places, but it can be done: the guy who proceeded Calhoun had 3 conf. championships and 4 top 25 finishes at the same point in his AFA stint.

I actually don't see Calhoun's floor as all that high, either. The only way that Calhoun could succeed, IMO, is to get the same system up and running at CU: run a triple option with guys who have been in the system for 3-4 years. Are you willing to suffer through another 3-4 years of dog**** offenses to MAYBE have CU get successful? And what if it doesn't work? It's another 3-4 years to transition out of the triple option.

Go back and read my other post on him.

I said if both sides wanted TC in Boulder, it would have happened already.

"Challenge Accepted"

-CU Administration, probably
This is what I fear. Sanford somehow wins one, maybe 2 games this year. He shows some fire and enthusiasm and the lockerroom reacts slightly better to him than KD because the bar is basically at ground level. The powers that be see an opportunity not to have to shake up things more than they already have been while also getting somebody on the cheap to help offset what we just had to fork over to KD. Sanford is offered a chance to interview with people like the idiots on the Board and Phil and nails the interview.

I can ABSOLUTELY see this happening.

It’s not going to be Sanford. RG reluctantly fired KD because it was embarrassing and the fan unhappiness was deafening. He knows hiring Sanford, under any circumstance short of going 6-1/7-0, would elicit the same response.
