Eastern Washington sure gave CU a scare. For a school with only a 9,000 seat home stadium, they sure electified the 100,000 or so B12 fan bases who expected to watch their BCS programs notch an easy victory at home.
Over the past two weeks against B-12 opponents, Eagles QB Matt Nichols averages 34 completions on 51 attempts and 316 yards passing. In his 0-2 start, he has sustained long TD drives of 54 yards, 75 yards, 81 yards and 83 yards.
E-dub WR Tony Davis has also strung together a couple of good games, catching 22 passes for 186 yards in the hostile environments of Lubbock and Boulder.
The Eagles have tied or outscored their opponents in 4 of the 8 quarters of play.
Eastern Washington's defense had all but stopped WR phenom Michael Crabtree last week, and held CU's Summler/Scott/Stewart tailback platoon to 78 yards.
As much as I want to beat up CU and/or Tech for shooting themselves in the foot with sloppy play, turnovers and penalties, the fact remains that Eastern Washington was running a tight offensive unit that does not roll over for their $450K one and done paychecks against the big boys. First year coach Beau Baldwin has come into two tough road games and made the point that this D-2A team is no cupcake.
Good Job, Eagles, for aspiring to win and for playing your hearts out. David doesn't always beat Goliath. But that little team from Cheney proved that teams without BCS revenue sharing arrangements, without more than 80 scholarships to give away, without network coverage, and without the fanciest athletic facilities in the nation can compete and put themselves in a position to win.
