'23 TNFR K Alejandro Mata (Signed to COLORADO)

Neither one of them is Mason Crosby.

Until we have a kicker that is a lock to win us games by the sheer power of their leg and the cockiness of their walk, a la the Cros, who used to rock Sushi Zanmai like it was going out of style, then I suggest we all just move along.

I’ve already done that and made the edit before your comment. Now re-read what you wrote and show me where Howell is deliberately cherry-picking numbers and says Becker is elite.
Excluding bad stats that detract from the point he’s trying to make is called cherry picking. He then said Becker is the best Kicker in the Pac 12 and has an NFL future. He then went on to talk about his rankings among the best kickers in CU history. It was all in a couple tweets today.

Becker could’ve said to the coaches, “I will prove that I am the best kicker in every Spring Practice.” Instead, he entered the portal. Prime told the band of 1-11 that he was going to “try and make (them) quit.” Statistics are one thing. Being a winner is another.
Becker saw the writing on the wall. Prime brought in his guy and used a scholly on him. Becker could be 100% certain that he is better. But he knows one will have to go and it won’t be Mata no matter how much better Becker is in the spring. So, does he wait until summer to get cut then be stuck looking for a gig or does he start looking now?

The only point I’ll make about Becker is that when he came in for a FG, I felt pretty damned certain he’d make it. He was one of the few players I had confidence in. If I were him I’d be pretty pissed.

Mata is not on scholarship from everything I’ve seen.

Prime isn’t going to bring him in, essentially hand him the kicking job, and then tell him he has to pay his own way.

Becker did what he needed to do. This notion that he could have stuck around and competed for the job ignores reality. It doesn’t matter how good Becker is or would have been in Spring Practice. Mata is now our kicker and Becker knows that. Pretending to take part in some kind of competition where the outcome is predetermined gets him nowhere.

There are conflicting reports as to whether Mata is on scholarship or if he's a PWO. Initially, Adam was told PWO and he's still trying to confirm.

It’s pretty clear that Becker folded when presented with competition.

I don’t like putting this in a recruiting thread, but everyone is begging to be done with the kicker talk everywhere else so I’ll put it here. We now need to be in the market for another PWO kicker. Those kicks from JSU by Matta are very concerning; low trajectory, lacking distance, and a lot of dying ducks.

I also don’t know how anyone can dismiss the importance of special teams. The inability to hit 40 yard field goals or losing field position on kick offs absolutely can cost us games. I’m very excited for Coach Prime and this is one of the few things I disagree with him on. It’s still okay to question the guy at times.

It's absolutely OK to criticize CP, we're fans, it's what we do. But replacing an average kicker with an average kicker is a really strange hill for people to die on. If you've got two quantities that you view as the same, anyone is going to take the one they have more trust in.

BTW, Mata's high school film shows him easily hitting 50 yarders with room to spare, so other than rumors and assumptions based on looking a stat sheets, the "can't hit 40 yarders" argument is just ridiculous. He's had another full year of practice and weights, and tack on the altitude 5 yards and kicks >40 should be fine. I don't see anything at all that would lead me to believe that Mata couldn't match Beckers 50%-60% from range if he had to.

As for kick offs, I couldn't give two rips about KOs until we're into the season and know what we've got. If the special teams is good enough to pin em behind the 25 the majority of the time, there's no need to kick it out of the end zone. If they can't, there's 100 PWOs out there that can come in and do the job.

You have a job at a company that gets bought. New management comes in and hires another guy to do the same job as you do. Raise your hand if you decide to prove to the new boss that you’re better than the guy he picked to replace you.
This idea that Becker is afraid of competition is completely baseless. He’s doing the same thing that every single one of us would do given the same set of circumstances.

It's almost ALWAYS good to ditch the new regime in any change-of-control situation, regardless of how much verbal respect/love they throw your way on the way in the door. Did this 3 times myself in my career and it always worked out very well. In fact in 2 of those 3 I avoided utter disasters as the new outfit(s) turned out to be much worse than I had thought they'd be.

To the in-place guys of the acquired/merged entity: The new managers are ultimately going to prefer their current guys and their new hires over you in most cases. They do have a temporary interest in saying nice things to you because you have valuable information in the short term about how things work.

Competing for a job on an even playing field is different than trying to beat out the teacher’s pet. He doesn’t have time to **** around for 6 months only to have to scramble to find a scholarship offer in the summer.

And on the PWO thing, if Mata is willing to play as a PWO, that makes the odds even worse for Becker, come to think of it.

There’s a culture shift happening at Colorado. You don’t seem to understand it.

Nope. I get it and support it. I only disagree with the kicker situation. It’s the only personnel move where CP is POTENTIALLY downgrading. But Mata may very well prove me wrong. And face it, we’re talking about a kicker. Not that big a deal.

The only way to know if you’re better is to compete for your spot instead of running to the portal. This is the part you don’t get.

Yeah, I’m a competitve person who likes to prove that I’m the best at my craft. He’s not.
For all you know CP told Becker that he is not spending a scholarship on a kicker, so either compete as a walk on or go somewhere that will give you one. Regardless, you’re a gambler. What are the odds of Becker beating out the guy the HC brought in to replace you? And by declaring, Becker can look around. It isn’t set in stone. Maybe he’s being smart and evaluating all of his options.
