CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

@skibum can elaborate on endowments, but funding their own football program through donations to their general endowment that were not earmarked for it seems like it’s not going to happen
So, you make a plea for a new offshoot endowment for the Football Program, and you build a new fund.
Stanford is like looking for an NFL owner, and that is easy

They do not need any money, they would just need to allocate part of their Endowment to run Football
They are in a different position

They're not in any different position than any other school with a large endowment (TWSS). Why would they spend their own money when they can spend someone else's? Especially when they barely care about football. ND has 12B but is only independent because of their NBC deal. Stanford isn't the only school sitting on a ton of cash and they all want TV deals. Who's going to televise their games?

So, didn’t the California board of regents have an option to block UCLA to the B1G? But they let them go and now Cal is about to cancel sports, will have massive debt and can’t afford a bill for their football stadium? Meanwhile the UCLA travel cost is going to be huge.

I think their board of regents miscalculated what was going to happen and assumed Cal would still be a viable program. And won’t they have to come up with the $$ to pay for the stadium too?

They look pretty stupid now, don’t they?

So, my point is that they are likely very frustrated and done dealing with a conference
If they want to keep playing football, then they can go independent for a while and compete on their own dime.
I actually think that APPLE+ would give Stanford a stand-alone deal for about $15 million, why not, it would be a fun test
Stanford could create its own studio on campus

Who knows what will happen with the ACC but the MWC might not be for long too.

The PAC12 is dead, and it will not be called a Power 5 conference by Fox or ESPN on air.
It will essentially be a PG5, and if the crapass Rammies find themselves over there, they better not try and market that they are P5

No. Cal will still be the best public university in the world. Most UCs don’t even play football, that hasn’t hurt UCSD or UCSB. Paying off the repairs to the stadium is barely noticeable in Cal’s budget. And it’s not like they installed luxury boxes—it was an earthquake retrofit. Cal is better off joining UC Davis in FCS or dropping football entirely. As is Stanford. It’s simply an accident of history that they still have FBS programs today.

More likely the AAC. It's the most cost effective exit fees for the Pac-4.

Not if the MWC schools dissolve the MWC which appears likely. 9 schools to dissolve if Hawaii has full voting rights. Eight otherwise.

The votes for dissolution: SDSU, BSU, CSU, AFA, UNLV, UNR, Frenso State, and UNM.

Votes against: Wyoming

Don’t know: Utah State

Hawaii probably votes yes because there would be more teams on the west coast. But they might need to build the new stadium first.

PAC still is an A5.

MWC has two more years on their media rights deal after this year.

All Apple has to do is re-offer the $20M per team deal and the MWC comes tumbling down like a house of cards.

For the alums of Cal and Stanford the only game that really matters to them is Cal vs. Stanford. If both go FCS they can happily continue that game and their fans will support it in a similar fashion to how the fans and alums of Harvard and Yale support that game.

Considering the number of tech corporate officers from the two schools getting substantial sponsorship for that game combined with the much lower budgets involved in FCS could make it a winning decision.

As you mention they can easily move in to playing the other FCS schools there and culturally adapt quickly.

No reason why they can't continue to excel at the non-revenue sports and again like the Ivy league schools they take care of scholarship cost out of endowments and other donations which are the biggest expense involved.

Apple isn't paying close to $20 million per school for CSU and the rest of that bunch.

Apple isn’t offering the same contract for CSU vs Fresno State

neither stanford or cal will cancel football right about now. there is far too much booster support.

years back, cal cancelled their men's baseball and the blowback was incredible. this is football we are talking about.

Yeah I remember that…good point.

Meh. The point is they did it.

Maybe not $20M per team. Eight MWC teams would get $10M each which is more than what the MWC pays. The rest goes to the PAC leftovers and they could be earning $40M each. All 12 schools would get full payments the next contract.

The Apple money was based on Oregon and Washington, Utah and the Zona schools being there with Colorado.

They aren't paying anything close to that for the Cougs, the Beavers, the Bears, and the Cardinal. CSU and Wyoming don't magically become worth $10 million because they are in a new conference.

CSU, Wyoming, and AFA might not be going to the PAC. CSU & AFA to the AAC and Wyoming to CUSA.
