It's back

After a long off-season of puns, off topic postings, and of course rampant speculation about the biggest story in college football this year, how often will Matt Rhule be mistaken for a janitor or truck driver when not in the athletic facilities football is back.

At least it is back on a limited scale for week zero.

We get seven games this week involving FBS level teams, or at least teams that are officially FBS. Some of the worst teams in college football are getting an early start.

Sat 08/26

Easily the most interesting game of the week has Notre Dame playing Navy in Dublin, Ireland. If some of the Notre Dame fans say the wrong things in some pubs they may find out what the real Fighting Irish look like. Not likely to happen though because after hosting Nebraska last year the Irish people will be happy to discover that most Americans don’t wear red polyester, speak like morons, and can actually fit in a stadium or bus seat..

The game itself has (13) Notre Dame in a good spot for an upset. Navy was a disappointing 4-8 last year but a number of the losses were close. They have a new head coach who had been with the prior staff so it won’t be all new and they have a number of solid players coming back.

No question that Notre Dame has much better talent but sometimes first games have a lot of errors and playing against a Navy offense that is different than what they see in any other game is tough.

The other ranked team playing is (6) U$C against Sad Jose State who finished 7-5. This game is getting so much national respect that it is playing on the PAC12Network while such powerhouses as UMass/New Mexico State and San Diego State/Ohio (yup the mighty Bobcats) are on ESPN and FS1 respectively.

Speaking of those games we get to start the season with an early battle of the bad teams. New Mexico State had a breakout year finishing 7-6. Maybe the least impressive 7 win season in history with not one but two wins over FCS schools, and not impressive FCS schools in Lamar and Valpariso along with beating Liberty, Bowling Green and the New Mexico Lost Boys along with last years win against UMass.

UMass (UMess) won exactly one game last year, beating mighty Stoney Brook. They were terrible and don’t figure to be much better this year.

San Diego State (7-6) host Ohio (10-4)

UTEP (5-7) had a great year for them, Jacksonville State (9-2 FCS) is at home.

If you are a glutton for punishment there are another two games as well.

Smaller schools start next week. Northern Colorado (UNC - Usually No Chance) has decided to skip the celebrity coaches and hired a coaching lifer who was an assistant at BYU for seven years and had some success as an FCS head coach at Southern Utah.

RMAC schools as well get started with their traditional weekend including some very tough out of conference games.

LOL...University of No Chance...good one Mtn! And also sad.

Ohio at SDSU looks like it could be a good one and it is purely due to the W-L records from the previous season.

I'm intrigued with the UTEP at Jacksonville State. Rich Rod is the JSU head coach and JSU is making its FBS debut after moving up from FCS. JSU usually had good and athletic QBs even before Rich Rod arrived. Between them and Sam Houston State, I expect JSU to have the better record this upcoming season because SHSU's interior linemen weren't that big despite winning a FCS national championship recently. The Bearcats of Huntsville TX will get pushed around at the FBS level this year.

Thanks as always, MTN.

What or who is to blame for the sh*tty week 0 matchups? You would think a network would pony up some money to be the only CFB game worth watching this week. You guys 'member when Prime tried to move the ASU game up?

This is fairly typical of week 0 although I agree that the schedule is slightly weaker than past years. The past couple of years we've had knebraska playing another B1G team for example. I also kind of liked it when CSU played on week 0. Regardless I'm here for it!

Schedule is complete crap this week.

They should have approved the CU-ASU move to Week 0 like Coach Prime wanted. Would have delivered a huge number.

I’ve got something going on this weekend so I’m pretty glad there isn’t much. I’m just glad there’s something Thursday night.

So weird that Pac 12 leadership couldn't make that happen.
Of course this is the same amazing PAC12 leadership that somehow in the middle of this total lack of competing games couldn't get the #6 team in the nation USC on a national network for this weekend. How do we have some of the worst teams in the country playing on ESPN and Fox1 and the highest ranked team in the conference is playing on the PAC12 Network.

This I do not understand.

Why on earth are there not good games this weekend?

Was this weekend supposed to be The CU v. ASU game on National TV? And the PAC couldn't make it happen?

The SJSU @ USC is the only game I would watch this weekend...but it's on P12 Network. I'll pony up for Fubo once CU has a P12 network game but probably not just to catch USC.

Looking at past years it's been about the same, the exception being 2019 where there was somewhat of a marquee game. This year's schedule is only slightly weaker than years past but for the most part this is what week 0 is, just something to whet your appetite.

2022:
Northwestern-Nebraska
Illinois-Wyoming
Duquesne-FSU
Florida A&M-UNC
Vandy-Hawaii

2021:
Nebraska-Illinois
Fresno-UConn
Hawaii-UCLA
UTEP-NMSU

2020: No week 0

2019 (the lone exception there was an attractive game)
Florida-Miami
Hawaii-Arizona

2018:
Hawaii-CSU
Wyoming-NMSU

2017:
Oregon State-CSU
Portland State-BYU
UMASS-Hawaii
USF-San Jose State
Rice-Stanford

ND scores first and it didn’t look too different against an undersized Navy defense.

ND 7-0.

Navy is moving the ball pretty well but with their style of needing 3 or 4 plays to get a first down they just can't keep it up for a full drive. And offensively ND is just overpowing them. And I'm not surprised to see Hartman playing good.

Navy DOMINATING on their 3rd possession of the game..... and missing a FG.
