It's back
After a long off-season of puns, off topic postings, and of course rampant speculation about the biggest story in college football this year, how often will Matt Rhule be mistaken for a janitor or truck driver when not in the athletic facilities football is back.
At least it is back on a limited scale for week zero.
We get seven games this week involving FBS level teams, or at least teams that are officially FBS. Some of the worst teams in college football are getting an early start.
Sat 08/26
Easily the most interesting game of the week has Notre Dame playing Navy in Dublin, Ireland. If some of the Notre Dame fans say the wrong things in some pubs they may find out what the real Fighting Irish look like. Not likely to happen though because after hosting Nebraska last year the Irish people will be happy to discover that most Americans don’t wear red polyester, speak like morons, and can actually fit in a stadium or bus seat..
The game itself has (13) Notre Dame in a good spot for an upset. Navy was a disappointing 4-8 last year but a number of the losses were close. They have a new head coach who had been with the prior staff so it won’t be all new and they have a number of solid players coming back.
No question that Notre Dame has much better talent but sometimes first games have a lot of errors and playing against a Navy offense that is different than what they see in any other game is tough.
The other ranked team playing is (6) U$C against Sad Jose State who finished 7-5. This game is getting so much national respect that it is playing on the PAC12Network while such powerhouses as UMass/New Mexico State and San Diego State/Ohio (yup the mighty Bobcats) are on ESPN and FS1 respectively.
Speaking of those games we get to start the season with an early battle of the bad teams. New Mexico State had a breakout year finishing 7-6. Maybe the least impressive 7 win season in history with not one but two wins over FCS schools, and not impressive FCS schools in Lamar and Valpariso along with beating Liberty, Bowling Green and the New Mexico Lost Boys along with last years win against UMass.
UMass (UMess) won exactly one game last year, beating mighty Stoney Brook. They were terrible and don’t figure to be much better this year.
San Diego State (7-6) host Ohio (10-4)
UTEP (5-7) had a great year for them, Jacksonville State (9-2 FCS) is at home.
If you are a glutton for punishment there are another two games as well.
Smaller schools start next week. Northern Colorado (UNC - Usually No Chance) has decided to skip the celebrity coaches and hired a coaching lifer who was an assistant at BYU for seven years and had some success as an FCS head coach at Southern Utah.
RMAC schools as well get started with their traditional weekend including some very tough out of conference games.
