Official CU vs. UCLA 10/28/23 Game Thread

I think we steal 1 game before the season ends and then bang our heads against the wall all off season with that Stanford game.

Here's hoping we dominate the transfer portal yet again.

Didn't deserve to win tonight but the score wasn't as high as I thought. Dismal offenses I suppose. On to next week...yet again.

The hit by Shilo was definitely targeting according to the definition of the rule. I sure thought it was clean until I saw an angle that showed his helmet hit the face mask. Thing is the contact with the face mask was pretty minor compared to the body shot.

I dislike the targeting rules but agree with the intent.

Has anyone wondered how much autonomy Sean Lewis actually has? We’re assuming that he has a lot. Not insinuating anything, just asking.
I'm going to assume that the coordinators have control.

That said, this has not been the Sean Lewis offense. Not going fast or seeing the balance or the in-play adjustments. It's not what I had seen at his previous stops and I don't know what's going on.

Fair question. From comments that have been made coach prime isn't a micro- manager. He has to know that not being able to run the ball is going to get his son killed.

I’m not sure how I feel about that.

He’s not wrong, but gives me Scott Frost vibes. Prime brought in 90% of the current OL room and 3/5 starters. It also assigns no accountability to coaching.
Narduzzi pretty much did the same thing tonight and some players started to QRT the tweet

Hopefully it doesn't get to that point for us

It feels like Sean wants to have QB run, and he couldn't do that, and he doesn't know how to run RB without QB run design.

it's probably not the case as I do think he is a promising OC. But it just feels like that.

Hopefully it does. Whoever is uncomfortable getting called out publicly isn’t cut out for big time football

It’s probably just his next man up mentality.

I assume Prime has brought in coordinators who are supposed to be the HCs of their sides of the ball. CP is a CEO HC like Saban, but it’s unclear how involved he’s actually getting in the gameplanning and in-game strategy
That does not seem like the best possible way to be great, unless you nail your coordinators

Prime brought in 90% of this team. This is his team and he told the media all offseason he can’t wait for everyone to see it. He said he was bringing all his “Louis”… Travis and Shedeur, and sometimes Shilo was about all the Louis he brought from JSU. He yelled at reporters and gloated after wins because people were skeptical and is now publicly blaming player talent. More leadership and accountability, please.

Also, this is not something I care to hear after getting their asses kicked

this is a fair take but i would note that we have had so much shuffling on the ol and it is such a tough position to plug and play that i am not sure that the greatest OL coach who ever lived could have made this materially better.

we need bodies and they need reps together. our 2 deep is ****ing dreadful.
It’s really not that difficult. And the scheme we run isn’t exactly rocket science upfront.

It is baffling that we don’t seem to even try to run the ball or do something different with the blocking schemes/coaching. Just try something fer Chrissakes! Take Harrison out and play a tackle at TE if it’ll keep #2 upright! Where are the screens? Where are the designed QB runs? Those would keep the opposing DL from standing up and teeing off on every snap. #2 is taking hits in the pocket on almost every play, anyway. Why be afraid to run him at this point? It worked in the one game he did it some. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Him not getting rid of the dead weight on the staff because they're "his guys" is possible and that's my biggest concern.

This is a great point
If his offense is built on RPO stuff, he may be stuck in the mud for ideas.
I also think that there are only so many good OLinemen and when you play G5 football, you gotta use everything you got.
P5 has great OL and DL, and a one dimensional shotgun RPO draw without a committed running QB is going to fail by itself, let alone with not very good Olinemen
The current trendy Offense is the Miami/SF offense, which ironically is just a modern version of the Shanahan offense the Broncos ran to SB championships
More Motion, More misdirection, Stretch Runs, TE and WR route trees, semi-mobile QB with accuracy.
Ironically, an offense that SS would thrive in.

As far as the screens go, I don't think our WR's do a good job blocking them. They rarely work.

Most of us thought we were going to lose this year before the season started and our expectations went way up after the first couple wins. Now we don't know if coaching is the main issue or if it's more a talent issue.
Yeah the scary part is that we all thought this staff was truly great. I don’t see a single AC that is a must keep. Nick Williams for his recruiting maybe.
