I know most of you don't like to hear this, but it is an important factor to this years team.

This is the breakdown:

The 111 players listed on the roster on September 1 broke down into 16 seniors, 19 juniors, 25 sophomores and 51 freshmen (including 26 red-shirt frosh).

We've played 20 freshmen in 2008 -seven true, 13 red-shirt.

Why don't we want to hear this? You make a great point.....and similar to the one I made earlier....this is going to take time to get turned around.

The fact that we only have 16 seniors and 19 juniors is ridiculous. I understand people transfer, but holy crap.

What are the injuries by class as well? I'm bracing for a tough year.

From CUBuffs.com:

Colorado has lost 49 games due to injury or illness so far in 2008 (as of Oct. 4), a number that will be no less than 94 when including the future missed
games of five players who have been lost for the season. All but five of those 49 are by players who figured in either the two-deep or prominently on special
teams. The Buffs are a bit shorthanded as Hawkins & Staff continue to rebuild the CU roster, but have 17 on the inactive roster now (seven injured, six
ineligible, four transfers), not including 16 freshmen ticketed to redshirt.

It is a part of the equation, but we're going to hear the same things about the defense next year. At some point, it's not too much to expect a winning record out of this coaching staff.

I don't think this is news to anybody here. But young players can have deficiencies that go beyond their youth. Coaches coaching young players can make mistakes that have nothing to do with their players being young.

Nobody was expecting a national championship this season. But I don't think most of us are inclined to ignore what we're seeing and simply hope that everything will change solely based on the passage of time...

Very true, but you can't win games unless you can put up points on the board. TT shows that you can win with a solid offense and a bad defense.

I'm lookin at next year's schedule, and 7 wins doesn't look like a good bet. WV at Morgantown, Texas at Austin. We still haven't proven we can beat both Kansas teams. Add MU, and OSU in Stillwater, and I'm thinking 6 wins max again.

We're 3-3. If you listen to some around here, you'd think we haven't won a single game this season. We might have a losing season this year, but to me things are pointing in the right direction. I do think the coaching staff has did the best with what they have.

This is the results you get when you rebuild.

Jesus H. Christ, you're predicting our results for next year already? Get a grip, man.

I think next week tells us what we need to know for this year. Personally, I feel like if Cody looks as badly in the first half against KSU as he's looked the last three weeks, then it's time to make the change and play for the future. But, if the team can rally and look competent then we stick with Lil' Hawk.

But, to be thinking about next year based on 6 games of this year is going a little overboard, IMO.

What, you haven't heard yet? We are doomed. There isn't a winnable game on the schedule for us this year. Doooooooomed. :smile2:

Oh, my bad.

**** me, let's just scrap the football program. Look at our future schedules! We have OU, UT, Mizzou, the Kansas teams that we haven't proven we can beat. Don't forget games with Georgia, Cal, Minnesota, UTAH. We're ****ed. Let's divert the funds to women's hoops.

It's already time for a change at QB. CH has had more than ample opportunity to prove he deserves to be a starting QB in division BCS football. He has done exactly the opposite.

CU will never be a good fb team with CH at the helm. It's blatantly obvious. Losing season last year, a grand total of one good game all year this year against a horrible CSU team. The offense has looked absolutely horrible all year, even in games we've won. We can't move the ball with any consistency. Unless you have an LSU like defense, if you can't score, you can't win. Guess what? CU will never have an LSU-like defense. In order for this football program to be successful, we need to be able to score points. When you run a passing offense, and you can't score, the onus is squarely on the QB.

No more excuses. The o-line isn't very good? Deal with it. Good football players make plays when faced with limitations. They don't fold. They don't run 10 yds backwards into the endzone and give up a safety (2nd this year!). They don't fumble 1-2x per game, every game. They aren't pick machines. They don't overthrow wide open WR's. They don't sport three game stretches with 40% completion stats

What has the current QB situation shown you to make you think the status quo needs to be maintained any more? Losses? Horrible performance after horrible performance? An uncanny ability to look completely outclassed by all of the other players on the field?

We have the worst passing game in the big12, bar none. There is no worse. This isn't negativity, it's a fact. The offense needs to be retooled to feature our best offensive players... our running backs. We need to consider different options under center, starting right now. MB needs a chance to prove he is capable of being better than horrible, because that is the state of the Qb position at CU right now and as long it remains that way, we won't be winning many games.

If you don't think the coaching staff is putting they best players on the field then you need to step away from the crack pipe. These men coaching don't work their asses off for years to get into the positions that they are in so that they can play the 2nd or 3rd best players on the team and put up S&*tty numbers. Unfortunately for us the cupboard is bare as far as talent on the O line. Is there an upside to MattB, absolutely. Is his time now? I don't think so. We are 3-3 with a chance for a decent season.

This is the results you get when you rebuild.

I'm talking about where we are right now. We have beaten CSU, EWU and WVU. We have regressed since WVU (a game where we scored 14 points in regulation, btw - that game was won on defense, not offense). We have serious offensive issues. SERIOUS. We are talking about what, if anything, should be done about them. Some of them are issues that have existed since last year, some are issues that are becoming more obvious every week. Some are simply the result of injuries and youth. Some are fixable now, some aren't. But they are there, they are very real, and until they are fixed they are going to make it very challenging for CU to win consistently. (Please don't lump me into the OMG we'll never win another game crowd, but when you have to depend on everything going right for your offense in order to win, you won't win on a consistent basis.)

If you think that CU's offense is even remotely capable, in current form, of even getting CU 3 more wins this year, YOU need to step away from the crack pipe.

The coaching staff isn't playing the best players. If CH is the best QB on the roster than this team is in very, very deep trouble, and not just for this year. Although, I guess it might be hard to recruit QBs to come to CU when they know that they have no chance to get any burn even when the guy ahead of them throws down 40% completion percentages and commits 2-3 turnovers a game, every game.

Also, I find the suggestion that DS is the caliber of player that only deserves 1 touch per game to be absolutely asinine. Players of his skill and talent level are highly recruited by schools like USC, Texas, LSU, etc. because they are good football players. I don't know if he pissed in DH's cheerios or what but him not even getting an opportunity to show off his skills is absolute BS and the notion that "we are putting the best players on the field" is blatantly false when it's incredibly obvious that we aren't.

Line up DS and Stewart 20 times a game each instead of trying to force the offense into some shenanigan oriented passing offense when we don't have a good quarterback. Look at teams that run the spread. They have good QB's! And then there's CU and Auburn and Michigan... oh wait, Auburn's OC tried to run some incompetent spread without the personnel and got fired, and Michigan just lost to Toledo.

Say what you want to say about the offense but it isn't good.

Also, the cupboard is bare? Whose fault is that? Maybe the coaching staff...? They have 3 recruiting classes under their belt, and even though one doesn't really count, that's their issue.

I don't feel particularly bad for DH when he gets paid an enormous amount of money to coach a football team in one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country. He is deserving of criticism and it's about time for him to get called out on his utter lack of performance during his tenure here. It's a job -- you are accountable for your performance. Particularly when your job is as incredibly good as his is. These people get a lot of perks and rewards courtesy of the university, the students, and football fans. They are not beyond accountability and shouldn't be. It is not beyond proper behavior to suggest they perform when they literally have dream jobs and are lavishly compensated.

I dont see the rebuilding turnaround. How long will CU be "rebuilding?" 4 yrs? 6yrs?

DH may not be the answer, and I'm tired of the apologists. Stop defending him, he gets paid over $1 Million. He needs to produce some wins or at the very least. It isnt like CU had had a real chance to win or even squeek on by. We are losing by at least 2 TDs. I have a feeling that will continue. EWU and KU shows that anyone can beat CU. Dont want to hear about our tough competition. We brag about it, so we better compete in it. No one wins a championship for the #1 SOS.

:yeahthat:

Especially with the trend in college football toward high-powered offense, we need to figure out what is wrong with that side of the ball. You can't win if you don't score quite a few points in college football today.

Texas A&M rolled up 500+ yards of offense today. KSU gained 449 yards.

CU's largest production all year was 367 yards in the FIRST GAME against CSU.
Since then, CU has gained:

351 yards against Eastern Washington
366 yards against West Virginia
278 yards against Florida State
266 yards against Texas
233 yards against Kansas

That is one hell of a point there. rep

Our spread/qb WOULD look better, however without the oline issues. I think that is the root of all our problems.

A lot of kids quit after Hawk arrived. Others couldn't cut it. GB left the cupboard pretty bare. Those chickens have come home to roost. Hawk talked about this last year or the year before when he stubbornly refused to start some redshirts because he needed to build up the teams depth.

It is a part of the equation, but we're going to hear the same things about the defense next year. At some point, it's not too much to expect a winning record out of this coaching staff.

Sure. Next year gets a little easier with Miami of Ohio and Wyoming on the slate. But were at Texas and At WVU

The hurt OL is a huge issue. but even healthy, running a spread with a slow QB with below average arm strength is suicide. Especially with the schedule we have. Cody is not good enough to compete in the B12, especially in the spread. There it is. Period. He was the best QB last year, and improved last year--he is doing nothing of the sort this year. So unless we want to live in the past with the OU win, we have to do what it takes to get CU headed in the right direction. I think that takes a mobile QB with more height and better arm strength. Better OL would be an option, but grades and injuries make that something we can't do alot about. A QB change is something we can do, as there is a more mobile, taller (much taller) and stronger armed option available. personally, I think Hansen is the answer more than Bally from what I have heard, but don't think burning a redshirt halfway through a season is the right thing to do. unless it is Baylor, in which case I think it would be ok for one play to burn an entire season. (Sorry--I still can't get over Barnett doing that to Klatt-- 06 would have been a much, much better season with Klatt back!)

In 2011 when we have a butt load of juniors we play CSU, Cal, Hawaii, Georgia, Baylor, TT, OU, and the usual north teams. That could be a good year for us.

Sometimes I think he's putting Cody out there because he knows all this and he also knows that were not going to be very good. He's still building for the future.

and today? We are regressing.

In 1984 CU, led by coach Bill MacCartney hits rock bottom, going 1-10. "We had to die to get better", says Mac.
In 2006 CU, led by Dan Hawkins, goes 2-10.

In 1985 CU goes 7-5 and loses a bowl game.
In 2007 CU goes 6-7, losing its bowl game.

In 1986 CU goes 6-6 which includes an 0-4 start to the season. (Oh ****....they REGRESSED....MY GOD.....THE HORROR.....FIRE MACCARTNEY!!!)
In 2008 CU starts 3-3 and ends up ????

In 1987 CU goes 7-4
In 2009 CU goes ????

In 1988 CU goes 8-4, again losing its bowl game. (That's it....****ING FIRE MACCARTNEY, HE CAN'T WIN A BOWL GAME!!!!!!!)
In 2010 CU ????

In 1989 CU goes 11-1 and plays in the Orange Bowl with a shot at a national tidal.
In 2011 CU ????

Yes, it does take that long to rebuild a program, especially when your predecessor leaves you an entire roster full of subpar recruiting classes. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat, or perhaps NOT repeat it, in this case....

If we're waiting until 2011 to get good....... well, yikes.
