I'm not even sure what to say or ask at this point. The best I can come up with is: where is this program going? It's too easy to say that it's headed in the right direction just because that's the "feeling" that Hawk has brought to CU football. Where are the wins? I'm sorry but what is football about if not winning? I just can't buy into moral victories and explanations about youth and injuries anymore. I get it. Everyone gets it. It's harder to win with so many injuries and young players out there but come on, is it too much to ask that we not get embarrassed on a weekly basis? How about training a quarterback to throw the ball from point A to point B without fumbling or throwing an interception every third play. Is it too much to ask the coaching staff to accept that their gameplans are worthless? They're not holding anything back, they're stubbornly hoping that eventually their playcalling will yield different results. Good luck with that. Good luck to all of us who love CU football. At least in my memories I can relive the glory years of the early 90's. I remember what it was like when CU was a national power, and was respected and even feared. I feel bad for the young fans who either weren't around or too young to appreciate those times. Now, the program is what it is. Bad.

No offense, but you sound like a Nebraska fan...living in the past. We aren't entitled to winning, just because we used to be really good. McCartney didn't exactly light the world on fire his first few years either.

Three years ago, Brad Smith's senior year at Mizzou, Tiger fans were calling for Pinkel's head. He had been there 5 years and they were still mediocre after he was supposed to turn them around. Granted they just blew a chance to be #1, but I wouldn't complain where Mizzou is now.

No offense? That's an understatement!

But I believe our offense will come around. The O-line looked slightly better yesterday. Nobody expected tooo much this season. I'm with you, give Hawk the time he needs.

Also remember we have been hammered by injuries and suspensions this year. I don't care who you are, that will take a toll on you.

What year did McCartney adopt the option as his offensive scheme?

85 I think, but I could be wrong. I know they ran it in 86 because it was my freshman year. Not sure what the point is, however. This staff would never adopt the option or even a power running game. It's not in their blood.

I'm sure I do live in the past. It was fun having a winning team. I've been a fan all along even in the bad times like 2000 and 2006 but losing becomes very tiresome. Yeah I'm sick of losing. Aren't you? You can preach patience if you like but "we'll get em' next year" doesn't mean much for me. This isn't next year. I want to see progress. What we're seeing is regress. Make of that what you will.

Oh, my point just was --- that was the year CU developed an identity. That was the year everything changed for McCartney.

I'm not sure if CU has an identity right now. I'm not sure if they will take what they've learned this year and turn it into an identity next year. I would like to be able to say that this year is the "growing pains" year and the offense will really take off next year -- but I don't see it.

I'm sick of losing too, but what exactly are we supposed to say? Uh, it was really cool back in the early-mid 90s? And?

I wasn't expecting a national championship, infact, I wasn't so sure we would even see a bowl this year with our schedule. However, what I did expect was escalation, improvement, excitement, passion, heart, something to look forward to. That is the problem. We don't compete, we aren't better, there is no passion it seems. There is no improvement, infact, I would take the '07 Buffs over the '08 Buffs in a game, and the '08 Buffs have more talent (freshmen and extra year of experience for the returning players).

I'm not ready to jump off the edge by any means, but it's hard to stay optimistic when you don't see improvement from week to week. (And quit blaming the O-Line--you need to coach'em up and stop making excuses, cuz whether you like it or not you need to find a way to win with these guys).

I didn't hear anyone saying "we'll get 'em next year" after last season. We won 6 games, knocked off a top 5 opponent, beat Nebraska and CSU... sure sounds like a successful enough season to me, especially considering the circumstances.

I don't know, maybe I'm just incapable of getting really upset about sports anymore, but I didn't see anything today that bothered me much at all. Our cadre of freshmen are now sophomores, we have about 1/8th of our offensive line intact, we were playing on the road against a ranked (overrated, but ranked), veteran opponent, and we hung with them for 3 quarters. I have seen far far FAR worse games than this.

I am curious how many wins did you expect as a "knowledgeable fan of ther Buffs"?

Cody needs to sit against KSU. Three reasons why in my opinion:

1) He is rattled. He has "happy feet" and locks onto one read only. Ballenger looked 100% more confident and comfortable.
2) His lack of arm strength and ability to throw across the middle are hindering our play-calling.
3) It looks like Dan Hawkins is feeling the effects of seeing/hearing Cody get criticized. Get the distraction off the field so we can focus on coaching/winning.

For what it's worth...

It is very frustrating but our O is very young. I have to admit that I'm just not sold on Cody yet either. Last year our O seemed to progress as the year went along and this year it almost seems to be regressing. While I don't blame Cody entirely I would like to see Ballenger at least share some more time and give him a chance to see what he can do much like what KU did 2 years ago with Reesing. It can't be worse can it?

I would also like to see Helfrich run the ball more. Is it me or does he seem to be a pass-first coordinator?

First of all your question (quotes and all) is pretty hard to understand both because of the way it is written and because I never said anything about being a 'knowledgeable fan'. At any rate I've said in other posts that I don't "expect" wins, I "expect" progress and there hasn't been much to speak of. This team is measurably worse than it was last year and you can chant about injuries and youth till you're blue in the face but football is a warriors game. If the players can't step up for their fallen teammates and the staff can't find a way to be competitive with the players they have then we're in a lot of trouble "friend".

Many Allbuffers have expressed a sentiment similar to yours above. That somehow, once we first acknowledge the O-line is decimated by injuries and suspensions, that the team can reasonably move on, and any further mention is simply an excuse.

But talent, experience and coaching wins this game. We never had a lot of experience on the line, but we did have some talent. Now most of that talent is gone, leaving very little to fall back on.

Here's the point: Just because we acknowledge it, it doesn't go away. CU's offense, which wasn't stellar when the line was healthier, won't likely fully recover. The line is at the heart of the problem. It's not an excuse, it's just the reality.

On the brighter side, it's my observation that the young, inexperienced guys in the reserve have done exactly as Royale suggested and stepped up. I thought the line looked okay yesterday, all things considered. I'm just afraid that they're mostly outclassed and will struggle throughout the remainder of the year.

I'm sure that you're right on all your points. I'm just frustrated as many people are that a program with this much pride and tradition could have slipped so far. I know that rebuilding is a process. It just feels like this year is a step back instead of forward. Hopefully the Buffs will make something happen in the second half of the year.

Re: Yes the way I see it...........

this program is going down the tube. AND FAST!

There is no reason to expect a win for the rest of the season.

:cry::cry::cry:

The most unfortunate thing, from my perspective, is that the team has regressed this year. Significantly. The buffs are a bad football team this year and it will take a miracle for them to make a bowl game. We will be favored in one game for the rest of the year, if that - certainly against ISU. A&M is bad, but so are we, and the game is in their stadium.

The context in which two losing seasons under DH was acceptable was the assumption that the team would continue to improve.

Instead, the team looks really, really bad right now. The offense is categorically incompetent, and the problem runs much deeper than an injured OL.

The Cody Hawkins situation is really bad for this program. How are we going to get QBs to come here when we are blatantly advertising: "It doesn't matter how bad the starting QB plays. It does not matter if he looks like he has no place being anywhere near a football field. He will play and you will ride the pine until there's 6 minutes left in the game and we are down 3 scores." Dan Hawkins has a conflict of interest and it is absolutely killing this football team.

We are still a young team that lacks depth. The hallmark of young teams is they are INCONSISTENT, especially when you throw in injuries, transfers, suspensions, etc. That means occasional bouts of regression.

Expecting constant improvement and the # of wins to climb every single year is not being realistic.

Bingo teams go up and down, ALL TEAMS! We have been good before, we have been bad before. We are bad rigt now, but we will be good again. And we will be bad again.

And to a team that is about 1 win away from being ranked.

The FSU team we faced probably would be ranked. If they had the players who were out with suspensions until they played us earlier, the probably beat WFU and would be ranked right now...

So then we can expect cu to lose every game the rest of the way because reality says we will not score more than 14 points.Okay I guess our coaches don't have to coach or do something to help out the OL or come up with any answers.

We'll just fall back on our OL is young and we have injuriwes there,we don't expect to win. Sorry, that's LAME:rolleyes:
