Okay. The last 3 quarters of the KU game was painful.

But that aside, I had a great trip to Lawrence.

My brother got me 'The Ultimate CU Experience' for my 40th birthday.
This included tickets to 3 home games and a press pass that allows access to the team that you otherwise wouldn't get. My liason to the school was none other than Assistant Athletic Director, KOA85 radio broadcaster and MVP of the nMC team Charles Johnson. I asked for something special in Lawrence, and he hooked me up with a couple of sideline press passes. I got to watch the game from the 20 yard line. Charles is a superb ambassador for the program and for the university. He is first class.

Lesson #1: When you start snapping pictures of the KU cheerleaders who are a few feet away from you, and you happen to be wearing CU attire, you will get heckled by the KU student section. I'll post a picture a little later.

Lesson #2: If you cheer on your team the same way you do in the bleachers, you will get heckled by the KU student section.

Okay. Now I can appriciate why players don't turn towards the bleechers very often. And yes, they can hear what you are yelling at them. Jeezus, fans can be harsh. I consider it karmic revenge for all the crap that has spewed from my lips over the years.

So after the safety, I turned my ass towards the KU student section satisfied with the fact that I had a better view of the field than they did. The speed of play, the sound of the hits, and the size of the players are all amplified. Oh, Aric Goodman's field goal kicking shoes aren't golden ballet slippers. They are really Nike track spikes made for turf.

The access to the players and coaches was superb. At the team hotel prior to the game, I was introduced to Jashon Sykes from the 2001 B12 championship team and Ashley Ambrose, and spent a while jawboning with Kyle Ringo. He thinks the writers at EDSBS and Barkingcarnival are genious. He hopes to improve Scout's coverage of CU. He reads the boards, he has long hours, and clearly enjoys his job.

I'm not into sports memorbelia, but I did tote a sharpie and a new football around with me. After the game, collected signatures from Cabral, CJ, Sykes, Speedy, C-Hawk, Sanders, Mohler, Smart, Dykes, Sipili, and Goodman.

Misti Hawkins was doing her part to lift the spirits of the players. Mike Bohn commanded everyone to win the next one.

All that was once in a lifetime cool.

The best part, though, was hanging out with friends at the pregame, enjoying the hospitality of the KC chapter of the CU Alumni association, meeting the travelling fans, getting serenaded by the band and being entertained by the CU Express.

I too went to Lawrence this weekend and it was just as, or more boring than the game. There was no electricity prior, during or after the game. Yawn.

Lawrence better than Austin?

Yeah, it sounds wierd. Austin is a cool city. It has Barton Springs, 6th Street, SxSW. I like Austin over Lawrence on any day of the year except game day and the night before or the day after. Why? Because not a single UT fan went out of their way to make me feel welcome as a visiting fan. Too smug, too insular, too cocky to be cool.

In Lawrence, I left with high opinions of campus police Sargent Anguiano, Professor Berghout, and the bookstore employee who all went out of their way to show us a good time. The students and fans were accomodating enough, although I could have done without the jerks with the bullhorn who were calling our band members "whores". But there are jerks everywhere. And the vibe on Lawrence's Massachusetts Ave was good. And Free State microbrewery serves better beer than anything on tap in Austin.

someone forgot to do their homework before going.

lawrence is a right sweet little college town. i love the old houses. love em. their downtown features a number of fantastic places to eat and tie one on. free state brewery. woot. their heffeweissen is seriously adequate. vailbuff is convinced it is the nectar of the gods. they will fill you up half gallon jugs. that was the sweet spot.

their campus boasts perhaps the singlemost prettiest building in the big 12 - their natural history museum. really neat. walking campus on friday, we noted that the students are friendly, the university staff are fantastically welcoming, and the school pride shown byway of wearing of colors is very high.

as for austin, it also has a number of really pretty buildings. however, i agree with skiddy that sometimes the best game experience does not involve how many asses can sit in a collection of benches. sixth street is fun, but hardly the final word in the universe.

perhaps you can share why it is you were the only asshole in lawrence without electricity? you cannot blame the city for your decision to stay in a tent. our suite had no such problems.

:lol::lol:

I meant electricity from the people, or the town that there was a football game that weekend. Believe me we went everywhere. I think we went to every bar on Massachusets, the Jayhawk and the bar across from it, I forget the name. Hell we even made a trip to Flamingos.

As for the campus, we stayed on campus. We got ice for our kegs from Naismith Hall. We walked through campus and yes there are very nice buildings, I like Anshutes library as well.

And yes we had electricity in our monster RV. I wish I could say the same about Lawrence.

Here's the story of my first kansas experience. I’ll put some pictures underneath to spice things up a little. I’m also going to split this up because a) it’s long and b) I want to add to my post count. Enjoy!

I can't vouch for Lawrence (which is actually somewhat unfortunate) because we stayed in Topeka. Holy s*** were we in the ass crack of you-know-what. The sum total of what was around was this: our hotel, 2 gas stations, 2 other hotels, a middle school, and a strip mall containing a mexican restaurant, vet clinic, a small liquor store, and one nasty-ass dive of a bar (which claimed to be a bar and grill). We arrived at our hotel Friday night and my girlfriend and I went to the bar looking for some food at about 9:30. The kitchen closed at nine and we didn't want to go back to the mexican restaurant and have the runs before the game so we figured we'd cut our losses and just start drinking. Fortunately the booze was cheap ($3.00 for a grey goose and cranberry) and we knew we'd be back after the game. We came back to the hotel and went to bed hoping for a better gameday.

The next day we woke up early for an 8 am departure to Lawrence for the game. After serenading our fans at pregame, we made our way into the stadium. (A brief ranting digression: I thought Kansas was supposed to be flat. That whole tailgating on a hill thing was kinda bizarre to me.) We were seated with the rest of our fans in what I imagine were the crappiest seats in the entire stadium. I won't say anything about the game, as that has been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere.

When halftime rolled around, we headed for the back sideline behind the KU bench. One thing that I noticed was that that stadium is not loud at all. Normally I have to yell at the person next to me to be heard but I could have a conversation at normal volume with no difficulty. Weak sauce.

The fans didn't heckle us, which surprised me and then we went on. People didn't boo us and there was actually some applause which surprised me even more. Then the KU band went on. They played some sort of guitar hero show and they opened with Iron Man. We do this as a pep band song and I'm not sure what version they were working from but even disregarding their parallel fifths, this did not sound nearly as badass as it should have. I don't know if anyone on this board was there but I feel like we outplayed them even though we were smaller.

After the game was over, we had to wait for a very long time to leave the stadium. Because of how things were laid out, we had to wait until almost everyone had left before our buses could get back to the stadium. I would guess we were there for an hour or so but the time wasn't a total loss. We got to sample the luxury seats kansas installed just this year. These basically consist of leather recliners on a metal platform at the south end of the stadium which were actually pretty comfy but small comfort after the game.

To make a long story slightly less long, we returned to our hotel and typical band trip debauchery ensued. Thankfully, no one was arrested or hospitalized and I had a great time. We returned to the bar (twice) with some friends and ended up at the mexican restaurant despite our better judgment (and were rewarded for our adventurous spirit with some HUGE margaritas). The pool and waterslide(!!) were enjoyed and subsequently closed by hotel staff. Finally it was time to leave and we piled on the buses back to Boulder. Overall, it was a fun trip. Would I choose to go back to Kansas again? Probably not, but we made the best of the hand we were dealt and managed to salvage quite a bit of fun out of it in the end.

I'll add some more pics if I can find them. I hope I haven't bored too badly.

You guys (the band) were great! I couldn't tell where the KU band was at all.

It is strange they don't cheer while waving the wheat.

Just for kicks and giggles, next time KU comes to Boulder, the athletic department ought to put the CU student section right behind the Jayhawk bench.

There really wasn't much electricity in Lawrence. But I'd chalk that up to the 11:30 start time. There would have been a better buzz with an afternoon start. The student section is general admission and it was filling up an hour before kickoff. I agree that the Buff band was loud and well represented.

It's odd that the team would opt to stay in Overland Park, some 50 miles away from the stadium on the south side of KC. That's kind of like picking the Tech Center as a base camp for a game in Boulder. The city of Lawrence would benefit by having more and better lodging available in town.

I have no idea what that means....

I loved Lawrence! The gameday atmosphere was a bit weak, but these are humble, god-fearing people we are talking about. We stayed on their version of the hill with a bunch of friends and tailgated all day with the Chi-O girls and their families. Nicest people in the world. The bars were legit, except for all the damn covers. Had a great time and definitely would go back.
