Okay. The last 3 quarters of the KU game was painful.
But that aside, I had a great trip to Lawrence.
My brother got me 'The Ultimate CU Experience' for my 40th birthday.
This included tickets to 3 home games and a press pass that allows access to the team that you otherwise wouldn't get. My liason to the school was none other than Assistant Athletic Director, KOA85 radio broadcaster and MVP of the nMC team Charles Johnson. I asked for something special in Lawrence, and he hooked me up with a couple of sideline press passes. I got to watch the game from the 20 yard line. Charles is a superb ambassador for the program and for the university. He is first class.
Lesson #1: When you start snapping pictures of the KU cheerleaders who are a few feet away from you, and you happen to be wearing CU attire, you will get heckled by the KU student section. I'll post a picture a little later.
Lesson #2: If you cheer on your team the same way you do in the bleachers, you will get heckled by the KU student section.
Okay. Now I can appriciate why players don't turn towards the bleechers very often. And yes, they can hear what you are yelling at them. Jeezus, fans can be harsh. I consider it karmic revenge for all the crap that has spewed from my lips over the years.
So after the safety, I turned my ass towards the KU student section satisfied with the fact that I had a better view of the field than they did. The speed of play, the sound of the hits, and the size of the players are all amplified. Oh, Aric Goodman's field goal kicking shoes aren't golden ballet slippers. They are really Nike track spikes made for turf.
The access to the players and coaches was superb. At the team hotel prior to the game, I was introduced to Jashon Sykes from the 2001 B12 championship team and Ashley Ambrose, and spent a while jawboning with Kyle Ringo. He thinks the writers at EDSBS and Barkingcarnival are genious. He hopes to improve Scout's coverage of CU. He reads the boards, he has long hours, and clearly enjoys his job.
I'm not into sports memorbelia, but I did tote a sharpie and a new football around with me. After the game, collected signatures from Cabral, CJ, Sykes, Speedy, C-Hawk, Sanders, Mohler, Smart, Dykes, Sipili, and Goodman.
Misti Hawkins was doing her part to lift the spirits of the players. Mike Bohn commanded everyone to win the next one.
All that was once in a lifetime cool.
The best part, though, was hanging out with friends at the pregame, enjoying the hospitality of the KC chapter of the CU Alumni association, meeting the travelling fans, getting serenaded by the band and being entertained by the CU Express.
