Some things that stuck out on defense against ISU

1. Our defensive ends lost containment multiple times. With a mobile QB and a team running some option, that is a disaster waiting to happen.

2. Dykes has improved this season, but his lack of speed is a still a huge liability. We need to get some speed at safety. There were a few different plays that should have been 10 yard gains that turned into 20 and 30 yard gains.

3. Our LBs are still largely invisible. Jeff Smart was absolutely getting blown up by linemen on Saturday. The LBs have to get better next year or we're really going to struggle with a young, inexperienced defensive line.

4. Our blitz packages are too predictable. It seems like we failed to reach the QB on about 75-80% of the blitzes on Saturday.

Is Sipili still hurt? Is Marcus Burton hurt ,in the doghouse, or simply unable to beat out Smart? Here's hoping Katoa and Rippy are ready to play next fall.

Agree with you on #1.

On Dykes, he has improved a lot, but year he is not a big time player. I have noticed that he is directing the D a lot pre-snap. I think that is why he is still out there. He seems to know the assignments pretty well, and take a leadership role out there a lot.

I think that 3 and 4 are related. I like Mohler and Jones but we need more from the middle for sure. Smart is a heady player, but we need some power in there. Next year, I would like to see more Sipili and Rippy. They are both bigger guys who can run. Smart is a great backup to have.

Yeah, I too wonder about Sipili. Hopefully, he can stay healthy next season and help contribute. We need some speed at LB regardless. I think all three freshmen redshirting this year will get a shot at significant playing time next year (assuming Major is good to go with the knee).

Good point on Dykes KP. He is definitely a leader on the defense, I just wish we had more speed there at that position.

Linebacker next year will be just fine. It will be like the offense is this year. Young, but with some playmakers. BJ Beaty is coming on, Mohler is pretty solid, Sip will have another year under his belt and with the infusion of Major, Kotoa and Rippy we will have an infusion of speed. Safety and DL are more of a concern. I know Perkins has been playing some this year along with Manhke but I don't see the speed in them two.

Whis is it?

Will linebacker be just fine, or will it be like the offense this year?

I'm a major sunshine pumper, but c'mon!

My correlation to the offense is that we are going to be playing a few redshirt freshman at linebacker. Young but much more athletic than this years batch. So we are going to see players out of position at times but I believe there speed will make for some of the mistakes. Gotta get the speed on the field. This defense is extremely slow.

The other problem is,we are a very porr tackling team most of the time. Too many times we have a guy stopped or we are in good position to make a play and either miss the tackle or over-run the play.

Also,cu should have had 5 sacks saturday, got to wrap them up.

The secondary has played well but our tackling must be better next year.

If sip comes back healthy we'll be okay, Mohler, smart, burton beatty and then you have rip, katoa and major.

Our lb's need to be quicker and become a much bigger factor in games.

If we want any chance to win our last 2 games, our run defense has got to be better, has to.

I wouldn't count on Burton. He isn't getting ANY PT this year with the exception of goal-line D. He is fat.

This year, we are lining up Jones or Beatty at DE often in passing downs. Expect that to continue in a nickel look with Mohler and Smart at the two LB spots in this set.
