In Watching GT-UM... It makes me think NU should never have left the option..

Granted, their offense is kicking ass for the most part right now... but watching this offense just destroy all the small light coverage LB's from Miami that are popular these days to defend the spread makes me think NU would be cleaning up with a decent option attack.

GT is now the only high level program with anything resembling a conventional option attack (I know its the flexbone, a specific variety). Paul Johnson is going to get the pick of the nation when it comes to option QB's for the next few years.

Now that this offense is succeeding again, how long until we start seeing it pop up all over the place?

I'd be down for CU to use it if we have the right personnel...I love the option.

I think that this is all cyclical. The defenses are starting to recruit to defend the spread and an offense like this is going to be able to blow the smaller defenders off the ball. I still contend that an offense like this will not win a national title because of defenses like USC that are both fast and big/strong. Eventually you will see teams start to go back to the power running game when the spread becomes less effective against the smaller and faster D's.

An interesting game would be Georgia Tech and Texas Tech.
Paul Johnson is certainly an interesting name... for a couple of reasons.
Is Dan watching the game tonight?

That would be a fun game to watch considering the contrast in styles.

I love the option! People say it makes for boring games, but tonight's game was just utter domination. Now that GT is the only BCS program running the option their opponents aren't really prepared to handle it. When you only see a specific offense once a year, it makes it really hard for your scout team to emulate it.

Ok, im for it, lets do the option!! Bring in another Kordell type and run the option peppered in with a few bombs downt he field every other drive!

I enjoyed watching GT. The option can work in CFB, it's just not the flavor of the month. GT will get it's pick of thoe great athletes like T. Frazier who were going to be DB's in CFB, but were marvelous option QB's.

NU never should have left the option I....

I'm wondering if the option will come back. The big thing is finding a HS qb that can run it.

I would pay good money to see that.

I watch a lot of high school football on Comcast and a lot of teams still run the option. Spond from Columbine runs it very well.

:yeahthat:

That's one of the few bad things that I think has happened to college football over the years, the downfall of the option. But the QB's who run it have virtually no future in the NFL, and that's what's on the mind of all the top recruits nowadays. Not to mention the fact that the spread offense is the flavor of the month. Air Force was one of the best triple option teams back in the 80's and they had great success with it. They had some fun teams to watch.

True, but it's not as if the spread option is going to lead top tier QBs to the NFL as high draft picks. Harrell is not projected to be the top NFL prospect. The same can be said for Tebow or Pat White or for Brennan last year. That doesn't take away from their talent, just that since the spread (option) isn't in the NFL I definitely see a lot of teams nervous about "system" QBs.

The NFLization of CFB has ruined it. Top option QBs around the nation will give GT a look. It's a damn good school for the sciences/engineering and truth be told, but a lot of players know they aren't going to be playing in the league. While the top guys want to play for a USC that runs a pro-style offense, talent is talent for most positions and the NFL has the tendency to recruit based on athleticism so fast guys at WR will always get a second look, even in an option system.

I guess you could consider me one of the "old school football fans". I really miss watching teams run the option. I also miss watching the wishbone that OU used to run back in the day. Don't get me wrong I like watching the spread offense on occasion, but it does get old watching EVERY SINGLE TEAM run it. Ah the good ole days of smash mouth football.

I've always liked smash-mouth football too. It drives me nuts when teams pass on 3rd and 1.

I don't think Nebraska would have survived the massive blowouts that they would have continued to receive if they stayed with the same system. Once 62-36 happened and then that epic failure against Miami occurred, the Nebraska option was mud to most decent recruits. Staying pat would have dried up recruiting and probably set the program back further than it's already been.

While Callahan was the wrong hire, the time for change was right. And that being said, Callahan was not a bad recruiter. He made two mistakes: 1) He was openly condescending regarding the Nebraska way and 2) He tried to force feed an NFL way of doing this to college students. If Callahan would have been a little less arrogant, Nebraska probably is back in the national picture again. But instead, that hire may keep Nebraska away from national prominence (i.e competing for the national title) for good.
