2008 Colorado Buffaloes - Pros and Cons

Terrible offense. Overworked defense. Worst special teams in school history. Hawk piles up the losses. His winning percentage is now: 0.351. You decide if that's acceptable or not.

IMHO - Hawk's judgment year is next year. No QB year 1, no talent year 2, school injury record year 3.

Year 4 he, and the team, have no excuses

Cons. Win Loss record (the ultimate determination). Offensive execution. Special teams.

Pros. Youthful team. Bright upside. Lots of returning experience for YEARS. Spirited game tonight. **** nebraska.

YEARS!

Cons: our O-line was decimated and the fill-ins were shaky at best
Pros: our O-line was decimated and the fill-ins got lots of playing time.

Next year on offense:
RB: Sumler (Jr), Stewart (So), Scott (So), Polk (Fr)
QB: Hawkins (Jr), Hansen (So), Ballenger (So)
OT:Miller (So), Solder (Jr), Bahr (So), Tau (So), Givens (Fr), Dannewitz (Fr)
OG/C:Iltis (So), Behrens (So), MTM (Fr), Head (Sr), Eastburn (Jr), Adkins (So)
TE:Geer (Sr), Devenny (Sr), Deehan (So), Wallace (Fr)
WR:Smith (Jr), McKnight (Jr), Simas (So), Blackmon (Fr)

If we can recruit a couple speedy WR's we will greatly benefit from another year and all the experience gained this year! We lose little this year and nearly nothing next year. That's the best thing about this year!

right on about the offense. defense is going to be interesting next year... I am worried aobut Dline... It is going to be very very young.

i agree on both points. as painful as this year was, it can only help CU in the future. the stupid amount of injuries led to a stupid amount of people who would have not otherwise been playing, playing. that is going to benifit CU greatly in the coming years with depth and experience and these players get more time under thier belt.

i do hope some good D line people are brought in. its gonna be thin no matter what. next year may be the year we expect the O to carry the D for the first time in years. Snow is right. D-line is big in this cycle of new kids. hope Hawk can pull a few good ones in that can play right away.

Pros.
Sure hope Daniel Sanders turns pro. For as bad as the OL was this season, the snaps were the least of CU's worries. CU lost a good center today, and in this case, it wasn't due to injury.

Seniors DJ Dykes, Big George "the Rabid Goldfish" Hypolite, Brad Jones, Ryan Walters and Brandon Nicholas will also be missed. Each had their moments this season. Their senior leadership will be hard to replace.

Josh Smith piled up all purpose yards on special teams. He was fun to watch.

Chap'pelle Brown and Shaun Mohler earned a lot of respect with consistent play week in and week out.

Summler picked up a lot of experience blocking. He'll be a complete back next year. I expect him in the mix, protecting who ever is the QB.

The team didn't quit or implode after the Mizzou fiasco. The OSU and NU games showed some offensive improvement over the prior weeks. (but not enough to win).

Rodney Stewart is the surprise of the season. Can't wait to see what his future brings.

In addition to Speedy, there is a lot of stranded talent on the bench, including some potential playmakers. Polk, Cunningham, MTM, Miller, Simas, Blackman, Dannewitz, Katoa.

Cons:
- Too many bad headlines for off the field behavior. Lots of fighting, purse snatching, passed out bloody in a hall way.
- Loss of key players who chose to leave the team: Maiva & Celestine tops the list.
- Academic ineligibility. Mr. Simas tops the list.
- Injuries, injuries, injuries. Too many to name.
- Worst QB play in the B12, as reflected in blocked passes, interceptions, 3 and outs. The level of QB play on opposing teams was awesome this year, and CU was a have not.
- The kicking game needs a major overhaul.
- O-Line was out matched more often than not, and the talent was not deep enough to substitute.
- DE didn't get the pass rush needed to slow down conference opponents.
- Hawkins failed to distinguish himself as an elite coach. He was thrown into the fire this season, and has yet to come out a winner in Boulder. This has all kinds of implications on recruiting and fan support.

I do believe at the beginning of the year this year, lots of folks felt the O was going to carry the team. That didn't quite happen, did it?

It's fitting the season ended on a sack.

They played better today then I expected them too. I think the coaching staff did as good as could be expected given the injuries. The defense seemed to play pretty well. Cody's two batted balls for a pick each were not so great.

I give these coaches two more years unless they completely flop next year.

Pros
-When we actually pass to the TEs, we're decent on offense.
-We played hard all the way through a difficult season.

Cons
-The linebackers. People keep worrying about the defensive line, but I'm worried about this group. They have played out of position for about the last two months. Yikes.
-The special teams. Our guys on kick coverage do not understand gap assignments. At all.
-Play action passes on about 80% of our passes. For the love of God, please cut that number in half. Please.
-Making the same type of mistakes in Game 12 as in Game 1.

A big pro is that Missouri and Kansas should be weaker. Both of those games could be winnable next year....KState may take one more year to get back With Snyders JUCO's leading the way..IState probably remains weak because it's so hard to recruit there. I can see CU winning three of those four games.

A big con is that Neb also has a lot of talent in Freshmen and RS Fresh next year..I think 58 out of the total squad or something like that. They also are putting together a good recruiting class. While I think Pelini was outcoached (the fake FG was a classic)...that guy can coach, and he has the intensity to win.

The circle is completing again. The big 12 N is going to fought out by the Buffs and Huskers, and the North winner is going to be one of those two teams 4 of the next 5 years...........that's a prediction.

Pros: Speedy, Defensive Back Improvement, Backup Offensive Linemen got a lot of experience, extended recovery period and strength/conditioning for offseason

Cons: Overall lack of team speed, Missouri ownage, Defensive Line Coaching (or lack thereof, unrealistic expectations, still trying to find identity

Looking forward, 2009 should show some improvement but there will still be a lot of green issues to deal with (wr's, oline, dline).

The schedule is tricky to me. On the surface it looks like the kind of schedule you could hang a dream season on but something doesn't sit well with me.

I see:
4 guarantees: CSU, MOH, WYO, KSU
3 competitive coin flips (will be close) UNL, TAM, WVU
3 No shots: UT, MU, OSU
2 possible guarantees or potential meltdowns: KU, ISU

I see a winning season, but whether it will be 6,7, or 8 is anyone's guess.

MU loses a lot with Daniel, Coffman and Maclin (most likely) leaving. If we bring the same scheme we lose, else I think we are going to have a chance with a green QB.

They do lose a lot with these dudes leaving, but losing 103-10 over a two year period is a complete team domination in all aspects. This isn't a Todd Reasing and being a play here/ a play there from beating Kansas type of situation. This isn't a four year lose to Nebraska by single digits type of thing. This is an epic fail worse than Texas and Oklahoma lay down on the buffs.

The game will be closer (like 37-20) but you're going to be asking a lot for a team that's going to be lacking on the defensive line to stop an offensive system that's merely going to be retooling. Unless Hawk and Co are hiding something or planning on addressing immediate help in this years recruiting class there's no one on this team that's going to replace Hypolite, Lucas, or Nicholas. And they couldn't get it done at all!

In this case, I hope I'm wrong!

Pros - 3-0 start, lots of playing time for back-ups and Frosh. IMO, the future looks bright.
Cons - Injuries (duh), 2nd goal at the 2 end around against A&M, maddening drops seemingly lack of concentration.

I can't remember exactly, but before the year I either predicted 7-5 or 8-4 and yes, I'm disappointed we couldn't do it, but I'm not completely pissed or let down.

We had some very rough patches this year with losing streaks, blowout losses, injuries, quarterback controversies, bad execution, stupid play calling, terrible mistakes, and overall disappointment about some games or decisions, BUT, this disappointment came because we are fans.

Fans of every school out there have lists of complaints about their team, no matter the level of success they reach in a season. It's part of the ride. Just remember, through the good and the bad, we are all still cheering for the same team that has been working all year for our entertainment and between the pros and the cons, we all know they will be back next year, and if they end up winning 8 games and a bowl game, we will still be here complaining about something. It's all good though.

Go Buffs.

Cons - the record and the injuries

Pros - the injuries. A ton of playing time for young buffs who will only build off of this experience. I am frustrated like everyone with the loses and no bowl, but we will be much improved next year. The playing time these kids got this year will pay in spades next year and in 10. The contributors in this game were mostly, if not exclusively, recruited by Hawk. The foundation is in place for a very good season next year and some special seasons in the future. It hurts now, but that will fade over time. Maybe not until we pound the Ewes next Sept, but it will fade. The team will be hungry next year.

Overall, the future is looking good. Great young talent with more on the way.

Go Buffs!

Pros: Got to see 3 games in person this year, and see most of the rest on TV. A ton of experience for people we weren't expecting to see for a couple of more years. Playing and being competitive against 3 of the top 5 BCS ranked teams in the last year(ish).

Cons: INJURIES!!!!! 2 of the 3 games I got to see we lost. Getting shut out. Fire the coaches talk (give them a chance).

Thanks Seniors for the guidance this past year and for playing your asses off the past 4-5 years. Thanks to the rest of the players for working and playing hard and never giving up. Go Buffs!!!!
