Chizik to Auburn???

I just read that too and immediately came here to hear thoughts, etc. Very surprised at this. Alabama gets Nick Saban one year and then Auburn gets the unproven Iowa State coach? Ouch. Where does this leave ISU?

I don't understand it, the guy has never proven to win... but anyways, rumor has it Gene is dumping the 'Clones and moving on to Auburn..

You mean you guys aren't impressed with his 1-1 record against Hawk?.

All joking aside, I don't think its that bad of a hire.. Auburn is hiring Chizik on his resume at Auburn as a DC and at Texas as a DC.. What he did at Iowa State is meaningless..

I, too, came to AllBuffs as soon as I saw the scrawl on ESPN. I was hoping that someone had some great insights.

I don't get it. I just don't get it. Chizik was 2-10 last season; 3-9 in '07. Where was the sign that this guy can be a head coach? Can recruit? Can motivate?

I can't wait to see what the Auburn faithful have to say about this. Tuberville was not a fan favorite, but he beat Alabama for what? Six seasons in a row before this year? What are they smoking down there? :canabis:

He hasnt proven he can win in the Big 12, what makes them think he can win in the SEC. I realize this year the Big 12 was better than the SEC overall, but I would bet that Auburn regrets this decision about halfway through the season.

hmm. good. maybe he can come to CU as DC to rehab after he gets thoroughly trashed at AU?

I mean I wouldn't blame Chizik, I mean I would got the hell outta Iowa as fast as I could, too.... But Auburn, what the hell are you thinking? Really, fire Tuberville, a coach is has proven to lead, recruit, motivate, WIN... and hire an unproven DC, who has proven he can not build a program in the Big 12? At least Turner Gill has proven he can build a program... Yikes, this is going to be disastrous!:wow:

I wonder what Tiger fans are saying about this.. anyone have a link to their message board?

Also wonder if Turner Gill becomes a candidate for Iowa St. with his Big 12 ties?

I quess we can assume ISU won't be promoting one of their coordinators, since they didn't have any:huh: Another year in Ames and Chizik's career would have likely been at a dead end. He must feel like he won the lottery, it will be interesting to hear the terms of the deal.

The ISU search will be interesting as well. If I were them, I'd call McCarney and we if he wants to reconcile:smile2:

:wow: this guy chizik fires a couple of coaching staff members 2 weeks ago, then demoted his OC and DC to staff coaches, now he bails on ISU to go to Auburn. Even if ISU were to hire someone like "Throatslash" or John Blake as their next HC it would be a vast improvement of what just left.....

this is really odd to me. i wonder how all the bubbas down there feel about this? i worked with a guy not long ago who was a AU fan. im guessing that boy aint happy right about now.

Take a look at the article written by the publisher of ISU's rivals page.

Auburn Can't Count

Finally. After two years of holding my tongue and being a good soldier – or shill as KXNO's Marty & Miller not so inaccurately said – I can put it all out there regarding what I've thought from day one about former Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik.

When Chizik was hired, I told some media colleagues in confidence that his stay at Iowa State would be three years maximum. Either he would fail miserably and be fired or he would have a little success and jump on the very first opportunity that came along to move back south. Now I must admit, even I am surprised at the bizarre turn of events whereby he failed miserably at Iowa State and still got to jump on the very first opportunity that came along to move back south. What the hell Auburn is thinking is anybody's guess. And who cares. Because it just unburdened Iowa State of its most unprepared, overmatched and incompetent head coach of the modern era.

The red flags began popping up almost immediately. When Chizik said that winning is hard everywhere - that it was hard to win at Texas and Auburn, too - you knew he had no comprehension of the task at hand. Chizik's resume is built on winning with superior players, something anybody can do. It's not hard to win at Texas or Auburn; it's hard to lose. When he was given the third-highest assistant coach salary pool in the Big 12 and immediately set about hiring his old buddies for jobs they weren't qualified for at a pay rate twice what he could have gotten them for, you knew he was playing head coach instead of actually being one. When Chizik told the players he inherited that he wasn't going to come down to their level, his legacy of all-hat-no-cattle sound bites was in motion. Few of those players had ever been part of anything as wretched as the two seasons Chizik presided over. He'd have been fortunate to have them bring him up to their level. And when he made the players spend 20 minutes of the first spring practice of 2007 precisely lining up their helmets, you wondered if a real life Captain Queeg hadn't taken over the ISU football program.

Why they fired McCarney is beyond me... That guy had them pretty competitive and they had two shots at the BTN title, which is amazing in itself. Chizik will get swallowed whole by Saban....

:yeahthat:

It must be what he did as DC at those 2 schools because he did nothing at ISU, one of the most meaningless BCS football programs around.

But ISU has been nothing on the national landscape over the past 20-30 years. That's what I was referring to.
Also...I think you said at some point to me that KU would not win another game after they beat the Buffs......not to be a vindictive SOB, but you were wrong, my friend.

Damn, if you're going to highlight every time someone is wrong on this site, we're all in deep ****.

Seems to me that Auburn just basically said that nobody can possibly win at ISU, that a 5-19 record is actually a decent achievement there, and what Chizik showed as a DC made him a top candidate.

Of course, if that is their thinking, you have to wonder why they didn't hire McCarney, who had a better record at ISU and has also put together a pretty good record as an assistant...

Tuberville is going to come out of all this as a folk hero among the Auburn fan base...

About 3yrs ago, Woelk wrote an article on Patton asking if anyone could name another program at a major NCAA school that had a comparable record to RP over such a long timespan. Though he was probably thinking BBall, I emailed him and offered up McCarney.

McCarney had a record of just about .500 over 10yrs at ISU. I think that is pretty impressive, especially considering what went on their prior and post his tenure. After 10 yrs of mediocrity, some people tend to forget that is better than what they actually deserve.

so, you like this hire? why?

We now have a guy with two years head coaching experience with a 5-19 record against Coach Nick Saban.

I say he never wins a Iron Bowl errrrr Bama game and gets fired in three years.

Word is this is a Dye hire and many of his old players will be returning to 'coach'. Don't expect Eric Ramsey to be there.

Actually, I do recall saying that, but what does it have to with this discussion?

And you either dug very deep to find out where I said that or else you have a very good memory. :smile2: Actually, that may have been on chat where I said that....
