this takes the fun out of college athletics...

This goes on at every major college that is serious about its football program.

Colorado was unfortunate enough to get "caught" for this type of behavior first. I sure hope the NCAA is reading this story, and looks into what is going on at OU and UT, and is consistent in levying any sanctions, the same way that CU was handled.

Of course it's going on at CU and NU. The NYT did a very similar piece on the recruiting of Darrell Scott last year.

The only difference is that when free alcohol and co-eds are used at CU, it brings down a coach and an entire program.

Think USC, LSU, OU, and UT will launch investigations based upon these first person statements?

Me, neither.

The NYT's editorial decission to embed reporters with highly prized recruits continues to deliver dirty laundry, with UT being common denominator. The acquisations this time around?
- Mack Brown's flat screen TV's and boasts that his home is more posh than that of Stoops
- Parties in Dallas for recruits with booze, drugs and girls gone wild
- Ploys to drive wedges between parents and recruits
- Poor coach to player ratios in the weight room.

While OU wears the white hat.
- Stoops in house visit includes ferrying food to the dinner table and chuckling with Grandma while watching Beauty Shop
- Daily e-mails with mom persistently underscoring coach as role model.

Methinks the NYT reporting is less than fair and balanced, opting to bash the 'horns at every turn.

I thought the article was poorly written. And yes, it happens everywhere.

Had the kid committed to the whorns, I bet the slant of the column would have been different. JMHO.

same writer too...... and he did the same bashing on Texas last year after DS committed to Colorado in his article..... just saying....

Yea, I have no doubts that this type of stuff happens at all big-time programs to some extent.

The thing that bugs me about stories like this is the general public perceives these sort of stories like the athletic departments and coaches are the ones organizing and funding all this type of behavior, when it reality it's the boosters. Granted, the athletic departments claim ignorance when it comes to this sort of stuff, but it's not like they're the ones organizing and funding it.

Hahaha yea was talking about this article with some friends the other day. Doesn't seem half bad to be a high end recruit.

But how could you guys miss the gold in the article? "Girls were also romancing each other."

Texass is all showboat and full of themselves and finally a year after eyes are opening. What does the NCAA do about there and obvious USC actions? Nothing for damn sure same would apply with USC and Notre Lame. The examples will always be the middlin teams or nobody's. Typical regard always to all NCAA cash cow teams in the sports they are powers in. Like the Never has been the Case at Michigan or Ohio State etc. The facade continues and always will.

My time at Michigan...of the stuff I've witnessed or heard about....they could've be on probation every year. Cindy Carlisle would have had a field day with the sexual misconducts that were going on. You then have the big three automakers right in the back yard? Come on! Lincoln Navigators, Ford Explorers (remember this is back in the late 90's when they were popular) and Yukons for everyone! It would never have come to light if Maurice Taylor hadn't crashed his SUV with Mateen Cleves (who was on a recruiting visit for Mens BB) inside (When Michigan and MSU were battling hard for the guys services)

But that's the thing......those communities support and protect their programs to the death. So yeah, folks in Ann Arbor, Baton Rouge, Columbus, South Bend, Austin, Norman, Tuscaloosa, etc. etc know what's going on but turn a blind eye to it. It's one of the necessary evils of being a big time program. USC, on the other hand, doesn't have a completely supportive community....but that's because their in the 2nd largest city in the country. And so you'll hear about crap from time to time. But they have the power players able to make any situation disappear.

Colorado is at a clear disadvantage here. And it's one of the reasons I still believe CU is NOW one of the hardest jobs in the country to win at. It is the type of university that does not have absolute community support, no power players, no traditional name recognition, no large fan bases, etc. etc. But it has enough of a name that people will pay attention when things come to light. The NCAA can prop up CU as an example of wrongdoing any time it steps out of line and won't lose anything because of it. And because of the recruiting scandal, CU probably has one of the tamest visits in the country now.

I just read the article. If half of it is true, then appalling doesn't describe how anyone should feel. Appalled at USC, UT, OU, and LSU. Appalled at the kid and his mother. Appalled at the NCAA for letting this **** go unpunished. That is if half this stuff is true.

But the one that made me feel the queeziest was good old Pentecostal mom. It was more about her than her son. She's the one who let it get out of control, starting with letting a newspaper writer follow them around. The ego's of these people is pathetic. This kid will never amount to anything in football or academics.

Also, if the OU president is gettiung involved in football recruiting to the extent this article claims, well, that says a lot about OU's priorities as a University. Higher education is certainly not at the top of the list. My dad, an OU grad, would be disgusted.

Does this go for DS and mom too?

Is it the competition that bothers you Skiddy?

I'm repentant. This happens once you've eaten BBQ'd Rusty while watching the UT cheerleaders romancing eachother in their assless chaps. Scrubing your backside with a Perrier spritz on Mack Brown's gold plated bidet while watching the RRS on the bathroom's 19 inch flatscreen has shown me the errors of my ways. IAPUWTAMAR. (Index and pinkie up with thumb across middle and ring!)

There is no fixing this problem. The NCAA was created to prevent abuses. As each new rule is created someone figures out how to circumvent the rules or they just cheat. It's a part of life.

Two sides to every story. You might want to read the rebuttal on Orangebloods.com.

I doubt the kid and his family will accept the offer extended...

Considering that Texas fans chose (and still choose)to believe some rather ridiculous and completely unsubstantiated rumors about Darrell Scott and his recruiting process, I couldn't care less what orangebloods.com has to say about anything. Why shouldn't they get treated the way they treated us last year? Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Maybe next time the shoe is on the other foot they'll keep their mouths shut, but I doubt it. If you read Texass message boards any player that ever went to another school was bought, Mack Brown is a Saint, etc.

I'm pretty sure that the NCAA's mission is to maximize revenue.

As such, every once in a while they have to punish a mid-tier University for rule violations to show they are being tough and enforcing the rules (and they can find it anywhere, as they happen every day, and everywhere).

SMU got the death penalty, while OU and others were clearly doing worse. CU got the sex and alcohol party penalties, while the top teams do much worse.

But they can't punish a top team, because to show that those teams make it to the top by cheating would show how rigged the game really is and reduce fan support and the revenue stream.

No. My recollection is that she handled herself with class. But then, I'd have to go back and re-look at the articles, since I have short term memory problems.

This story just doesn't seem to add up on a lot of levels.

The only way to put a dent in this crap is to stop allowing campus visits, as if that would ever happen. Seems like Bitsy tried something of the sort only to become a laughing stock of the evil masses.

No campus visits is ridiculous. And it would be the end of CU football.

i disagree. i think it just means that the president has to wear a lot of hats, and supporting the athletic community is one of them.

if ou did not care about academics, this colorado gal would not have had the distinction of being ou's 27th rhodes scholar. cu has a damn fine academic tradition. care to share how many of those we have?

disagree. President Boren became involved because academics is important to this young man, from his hard work in the classroom, and he and his mother are worried about the stigma that people like you and others believe and spread that OU is not a top tier university for academics. To me this kid sounds like he wants to be a STUDENT/athlete.

oh and btw, everything that was mentioned about the recruiting visits, parties, hostess, booze and stuff aren't infractions per the NCAA guidelines as it was never mentioned that the young man received "gifts" of any sorts, nor did he mention coach's slush funds from off season coaching clinics either...

yup.

this "ethos" is very much a part of Texas fans' self-identification and it goes back all the way to the SWC where (in their minds) everyone else cheated to keep up with Texas. they believe they are clean and everyone else is dirty. If a kid leaves the state of Texas, he's been bought. plain and simple.

Mr. Ketchum's response to the NYT's article is oddly similar to my response regarding the Austin Statesman's (?) accusations regarding Darrell Scott's mother.

Weren't we promised facts to back up those accusations?
Facts are not required with the Orangebloods......

Ryan Perrilloux, Darrell Scott, Jamarkus McFarland...

I'll take "pissed off Longhorns for $1,000," Alex.

Anyone see a trend? First comes the recruting trail competition, then comes the outlandish and unsubstantiated allegations against manipulative mothers with offers of loans, then comes the gratuitous stories involving sex, drugs & booze, then comes the outrage on the net, with the token challenges for someone to put up or shut up, then the final act is the Mack Brown curse which renders the prize recruit ineffective. It's like déjà vu all over again.
