CU opponents in bowl games

Hmm. 3-0 so far. And two of the three we beat. Maybe we should change our philosophy and start playing nothing but pansys in the OOC schedule.

I wouldn't schedule pansy's but I'd schedule winnable BCS teams. Including Colorado State, the Buffs could plays Syracuse, Kentucky, and NC State. They'd be name victories but also a lil bit easier than UGA, Miami, FSU, etc. etc.

So if they ever get in the national picture again.....the argument can be made that they never played 1-aa teams nor Non BCS schools (CSU insterstate game excluded)

The program needs some momentum.....maybe throwing a few cupcakes on the board every other season wouldn't a bad idea.....

Next year we have CSU, Miami of Ohio, and Wyoming in the OOC. That's three cupcakes.

We havent forgotten how we do against "cupcakes" right?

Montana State (lost).....Eastern Washington (almost lost). Lets stick with the midmajors

I'm not too sure cupcakes are completely cupcakes anymore. You can ask a few teams about these so called cupcakes that have beaten them or taken em to the wire. Also not to sure I would be calling Miami of Ohio a cupcake. They have been known to rise out of the ashes and be a pretty darn good ball club. CSU looked pretty good in their bowl and we'll have to wait and see if or how that carries them on into the next year. Wyoming looks to have a lot of work to do. If my memory serves me correct the last time Wyo came to boulder they d#mn near beat cu. I know, I know these are not the same teams. But as you are all aware of don't be overlooking these teams as they can come up and bite you in the a$$.

I wouldn't change a thing about the way CU schedules. I feel sorry for the teams that play the OOC teams that KSU used to schedule on a regular basis.

I would. Those teams you feel sorry for? Yeah they are bowling right now. And they aren't feeling very sorry for us right now. We aren't bowling...but hey we play a REAL schedule! The only thing history remembers is W-L record. Win in the Big 12 and the rest takes care of itself. I think CU would do itself a lot of good if it scaled back the OOC schedule a bit.

I understand that some people prefer worrying about the W-L record over a quality OOC, but I disagree that people only remember the W-L record. I bet some people remember the win over Michigan, or the win over Washington after Sal passed away or the win over Texas and Salaam's huge rushing total that game. Do you think he would have won the Heisman if they had played Troy State that weekend?

I don't remember the W-L record all those years, but games like those are some of the reasons I love college fb.

I'm with you - if CU had played Florida Atlantic or Florida International (like Kansas and Texas did), instead of Florida State, we would be talking about the Buffs and a bowl bid, a potential winning season, and momentum for 2009. Now we're stuck in the background talking about what might have been.

Can't change what's there - most of CU's schedule is set for the next ten years, and the 2010 schedule (CSU, Hawaii, Georgia, and Cal) is enough to make a great team cringe. The Buffs are just going to have to suck it up and get the job done.

uhhh...no it doesn't.

Just playing devils advocate, I don't think there is any question that the WVU game was the highpoint of the season. Would you have given that up for a likely loss in the Insight.com Bowl? I doubt anyone will be rushing the field at that game.

The reason CU is not in a bowl game is because the team was decimated by injuries. I give the team lots of credit for playing the way they did in Lincoln, but watching all those games in the second half of the season, this team shouldn't be in a bowl. A bowl-worthy team would have beaten aTm.

Injuries. Youth. Schedule. All of it came together for the Perfect Storm this year. The Perfect Storm is a rare thing. Except when I'm stupid enough to try to get out of walking the dogs just as the Nuggets tip off.

Some problems with your points. Those teams that played Washington and Michigan were 2 of the top 3 best teams in over 100 years of Colorado football. It is easier to do that when you have a top 5 program. As for WVU vs a bowl are you on crack? I didn't say that CU has to go all Sunbelt all the time, but it is time to stop scheduling 2 top 25 BCS teams on top of an instate rivalry game to open every year. Have you noticed how much the recruits are buying in right now because we had a kick ass WVU game 4 months ago? From outside perspective this program needs momentum bad, and getting to a bowl helps, even if it is the toilet bowl. Once the program is estabilished as a solid top 25 than maybe they can ratchet up the OOC difficulty. Until then, Colorado is shooting itself in the foot every year. Here is a homework assignment for you, go ask any fan of any team what is more important, a tough losing schedule or a bowl season built on a few cupcakes in OOC and get back to me on the number of fans for your view vs mine.

We went 3-1 OOC this year. We have a solid chance of doing the same next year. It comes down to winning conference games and some road games. We went 2-6 in conference play this year and were didn't win a single road game. Complain all you want about tough OOC schedules, but any halfway decent team should be able to find a way to win one freaking road game.

First of all, I am not a big fan of the transitive property of "look at the teams in bowl games and who we beat in the regular season". They are bowling and we are sitting home. It does lend itself to the scheduling question...

IMO, it is one of the most difficult questions facing our program. We have traditionally scheduled tough OOC opponents, but the landscape of college football has changed. With the increase of TV and number of bowl games, going to a bowl is not that difficult. Before ESPNinfinity TV, teams had to play marquee matchups for exposure. Now everybody is on TV. So why do we continue to schedule a tough OOC schedule? Because we have to.

Our lack of money in the AD and inability to draw crowds regardless of opponents have gotten us into some less than favorable OOC matchups (2 in Tallahassee, one in Boulder, etc) People say we should play second-tier BCS schools (NC State, Syracuse, Kentucky) but that is easier said than done. Everyone is looking to do that. Do you think those "second-tier BCS" schools are content being just that? They are either going to schedule garbage teams and make lower tier bowls (ala Kansas and Kstate) or try to schedule against the cream of the crop to try to beat them. If they don't, at least they generally get paid.

As Montana said, schedules are set AT LEAST 5 years in advance and it is difficult to project how a team will be at that point. I am sure when we scheduled Utah (see 2012) we weren't planning on them being a BCS team.

Bottom line is we need to continue our scheduling the way it is... UNLESS our program can prove that it will sell out Folsom regardless of who is on the other sideline. OR we improve to a point that we can consistenly beat any level of opponent. Neither of which CU has proven it can do over the last 15 years.

The other option is to become KU and relish a Tangerine Bowl bid or maybe even KjUco and when the perfect storm comes together make a title run. I will take our mediocre year and our perfect storm of young, schedule and injuries.

If won loss record is the factor in determining the bowl teams versus what are true quality teams in competition then NCAA should consider themselves a ****in disgrace.

Sorry junior, I don't think I am going to take up homework assignments from you.

As far as recruiting is concerned, the prominent schedule CU consistently plays helps us with recruiting immensely. How many kids have said they chose CU because CU plays the best teams in the nation? I bet it's a hell of a lot more than those who committed because CU played in the Houston Bowl.

As a wise old fella just commented to me, it's about the games.

I would agree with that, but unfortunately the true answer is worse--that teams are chosen based on how many fans will follow them to the bowl.

CU travelled pretty well to the Indy bowl last year. I suspect any game west of the Mississippi will get a decent turnout from CU fans.

My personal opinion is that if you expect your team to be in the mix for a national title every year, CU is probably not the team for you.

However, if you play a decent schedule, often a single loss won't take a team out of the mix. I remember Mack Brown saying after the OSU series he was through scheduling like that. Ironically, if they had played OSU this year instead of Rice, they would be the championship instead of OU.

Or if nebraska's kicker had missed that pesky field goal...

Just to throw this out there. I look forward to making a trip to Morgantown next year. And Hawaii in 2011. I'm still bummed LSU was scratched from the schedule in favor of Fresno because of the game day experience in Baton Rouge. These OOC games provide the perfect excuse to see places that I'd otherwise never visit.

Broadly speaking, the minor bowl games are fun enough, but are off campus and sometimes miss the energy and excitement of September on the road.

Bowl game weather is sometimes sketchy, and it's often not as fun as going to soak in the tradition of the storied campuses on game day.

Of course I want to see CU have a winning record, but trying to make last minute bowl plans to lower tier bowls is a poor trade off for adding more cup cakes IMHO.

CU opponents are now 4-0 in bowls. The OOC schedule had nothing to do with our missing the bowl. You go 3-1 OOC, you should be able to win 3 conference games period. The Big XII was the best conference in the country this year and our injuries (I know it is an excuse) spelled doom for this team and a bowl game. 09 will be different. We will return a team that has tremendous experience and have a very favorable home schedule. We will win more than we lose (I think it will be between 8 and 10 wins) and go to a very respectable bowl. I think we will have a good shot a winning the North next year and set up a chance for something even bigger if we can get some breaks in the CCG.

That's great and all but if we keep losing every year what's the trade off? That some fans got to go to baton rouge? Yipee, meanwhile will sit in mediocrity while teams are passing us by that shouldn't be.

I am hoping the Buffs will be competitive enough to win that game (if it was still scheduled) at LSU.

It's the fan's roll to show up and cheer. The players and coaches are responsible for W/L.

Folsom was practically a ghost town in their victory against New Mexico State a few years back. This goes to show that winning in and of itself doesn't draw crowds and certainly doesn't bring network revenue.

It's simple. Fan's want wins against quality opponents. CU's problems were hardly caused by the OOC schedule. CU had one of the worst teams in the B12, and needs to win on the road in the conference to earn a spot in a bowl.

One more thought - going to a low level bowl isn't always a money maker for the school. Throw in the cost of lodging, hospitality, travel for the band and it's sometimes hard to break even.

At the end of the day, the forces that conspire to cause CU to schedule a tough OOC is part of the CU experience. It's who we are and what we do. It's as much a part of our psyche as arguing about it and expecting winning seasons.

Or if they hadn't lost on the last play of the game in Lubbuck.

6-1 so far? 'braska, KU, WVU, FSU, CSU, and Mizzou are the winners. Okie St. the only loser so far.

Texas is all that's left. If those asshats don't beat the luckeyes, then I'll have to head down to Mack's mansion (with flat screens & all) and personally kick his ass.
