Leach-TTech negotiations

Documents detail talks between Texas Tech, Leach

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Contentious negotiations on a new contract for Texas Tech coach Mike Leach have stalled largely on questions of what happens if he tries to leave the Red Raiders.
Leach and his agents have taken issue with termination and buyout clauses and a provision that would trigger the coach’s firing and a $1.5 million penalty if he interviewed for another job without permission, according to documents released by the school Friday.
“It’s pretty much out of my hands. I’m just focused on coaching football,” Leach told The Associated Press late Friday.
In his current deal, which has two years remaining, Leach has no restrictions on interviewing elsewhere.
Athletic director Gerald Myers wrote to one of Leach’s agents that approval for interviews “would not be withheld unreasonably, but we want you as his agent to stop shopping Coach Leach everywhere and him not saying anything to deny that he’s looking for another job.”
The letter was among 92 pages of correspondence between school officials and Leach’s agents released to several media outlets through an open-records request. The letters and e-mails were obtained by The Associated Press.

I can't see Tech doing anything but giving Leach what he wants.

he needs to take it up a level or two before that happens. He is well liked in Lubbock and all, but needs to win the division/conference and go to a BCS bowl a few times before the above happens....

I bet the rumor of him sneaking up to UW to interview started this stipulation. I don't think it is unreasonable.

it was indicated in an article yesterday that the restrictions placed in play on this new contract offer are above and beyond those in place in other coaches contracts in the b12.

i think both sides need to tread lightly. leach at least has two years of a contract without restrictions. based on that, i think the AD was out of line complaining that leach's agents are "shopping" him around. there is no contractual leg to stand on. they stand to lose the best coach they have had if they try to put the squeeze on him - that is human nature.

Not sure about you, but I would object to these terms as well. This is bull**** and they are just trying to **** with him because they know they cannot keep him long term. Its Lubbock for christ's sake.

i would object to those terms too. now that Bob Knight has dumped his son on them....minus Leach they are looking at being the Big XII south cellar dwellar in both bigtime revenue sports for a long time.

:wow: and thats sinking pretty low if you rank Baaylor #5 in both sports....

So he is supposed to accept or reject their offer today. I really do not understand how it has come to this.

Tech really doesn't seem to be negotiating from a position of strength on this one. Leach is all they have ever had in terms of consistent football success. Who the hell else is ever going to coach long-term in Lubbock?

They should be kissing his ass, not threatening him. Leach has never had a losing season in Lubbock.

Tech fans think they can attract quality candidates because Leach has made the job desirable. I don't think they understand that just because you're willing to pay a lot, that doesn't mean you're destined to have a good head coach.

Any coaching candidate that looks at Tech is going to look at several factors: Tech will always be behind UT and A&M in the state, the way Leach was treated, and Lubbock is a craphole.

They might believe that, but they are in for a rude awakening if Leach leaves.

Personally, I think the guy is a little overrated. When Spike Dykes was coach they were in about the same position in the B12S rankings as they are now (finishing 2nd most of those years before Stoops showed up).

He gets a lot of attention because of his offense, but they won't fall far with a good replacement, imho.

The B12S has gotten a lot tougher in the last 10 years though, and before that they were in the SWC. Dykes' teams finished the season ranked only twice in 14 seasons. Leach's teams have finished ranked four times in 9 seasons, including 4 of the last 5. Leach is also 5-4 in bowls (every season he has coached at TTech) and Dykes was 2-5. I think you're underestimating how much of an improvement he was.

It's funny, but this same conversation went on the other day at Hornfans.

Here is some of the excerps, assuming they are accurate;

Leach is 29-5 in non-conference play. He is 2-3 in non-conference play against other BCS opponents, and as noted, dropped them as soon as their contracts ran out (in 2003).

Of those 29 wins, 11 have been against SMU and New Mexico. Add another 8 against D-1AA teams, and that 85% winning percentage in non-conference play doesn't look like much.

Leach is 42-30 in conference play, and 4-14 against Texas and OU.

Spike had home and home schedules with OU, Nebraska ( 2 visits to LIncoln for one trip to Lubbock) North Carolina State and Oklahoma State.

Under Spike Tech had road games at Tennessee, Georgia (twice) Penn State, Ohio State, Kansas State, and Arizona State

They also had home games with Miami, Missouri and Fresno.

Spike left home-and-home schedule with Ole Miss and N.C. State for Leach, and as soon as they were over in 2003, Tech dropped the pretense of playing anyone. They haven't had a single non-conference game against another BCS school since then.

I'm not making the argument that the program hasn't advanced a little under Leach, but I think the guy is a little overrated, and finishing consistently 3rd in the B12 at Tech is not impossible for another coach.

Leach has adopted the Snydley aproach. As Stampy pointed out, they are a 7-5 team year in and year out, with four wins against total patsies. Occasionally, they hit a homer and go 9-3. Complete cupcake scheduling is what makes Pirate Mike what he is today....overrated.

The record may be deceiving, but he has raised the profile of Texas Tech.

No argument. However, Tech is in the B12, in Texas, with a history of being competitive, and with no academic limitations.

Could they get Gary Patterson for example if Leach left? Maybe. Could he replicate what Leach has done? I would certainly think so. All I'm saying is Leach's departure isn't necessarily the death of Tech.

I don't think Leach's departure would be the death of Tech, but I doubt his successor would have the same level of success.

I could be wrong, but Tech's football history says otherwise.

I heard he's out, some deadline to sign the contract passed and the Board of Regent's are going to fire him Friday.

I don't get him crying about that clause at needing permission to interview somewhere else. I own my own company and if I find out someone wants to leave - I get rid of them and find someone else. These schools have a lot of $$$$$ tied up in these coach's and I see nothing wrong with the clause.

Football is a different world though. If they can Leach, they are going to have to buy out his contract and pay him anyway. At the same time, they'll diminish the pool of replacement candidates because there are going to be many coaches who take issue with the way Texas Tech handled the situation.

Wow. I've heard the same. They're supposedly going after Baylor's HC according to SI.com's Truth & Rumors.

That will be a huge call, that AD has balls.

Personally I'd pursue Patterson, but it's hard to argue with going after Briles, he had a pretty solid performance this year.

According to the Tech BBS, the AC's are already looking for other jobs and the firing of Pirate Mike is all but done.
