NEW YORK -- The Mountain West Conference wants to lead the fight for a major college football playoff.

The MWC presented the BCS with a proposal Wednesday to create an eight-team playoff system that would allow greater access to the national championship game to teams outside the six most powerful leagues.

Commissioner Craig Thompson and four university leaders from the MWC announced details on a conference call and the entire 2½-page proposal was posted on the league's Web site...

Nice effort, won't pass.

It's a start, though. Fans certainly seem to be behind the MWC on this one... voters in the poll they have on that article support their proposed playoff structure 92% to 8%.

Yes, ESPN polls are dumb, but still...

If there's an 8-team playoff they have to take what most consider to be the best 8 teams over the course of the season. Whether that's done by the BCS standings or by a committee, it doesn't matter. The one thing they absolutely cannot do is award automatic bids to conference champions.
