Anyone been to the practices that can comment on the D backs and safties? Had lunch with a former buff today (not my own) who says he is worried about the secondary. He also says he doesn't think the attitude is there like it was when he played. Comments?

Not sure what he is smoking but I think the DB will be the strength of the D along with the LB's. Cha'pelle was Honorable Mention last yr so I think he will be a starter at CB. It looks like Jimmy Smith, Burney, and J. Brown will battle for the other spot IMO. Anthony Perkins and Patrick Mahnke have made huge strides. Both are physically impressive

Yeah I don't see it. Colorado had the best pass defense in the conference last year and returns a lot of experience and a good secondary coach. I think things are just fine.

yeah that is a head scratcher. heard nothing but good things about the secondary.

I'm just saying what he said, I haven't been to practices so WTF do I know. This former Buff was an NFL scout for a while and apparently he thinks we lack athletes in the D backfield. Says when he played practices were much more intense. Thinks that hawk needs to turn it around this year or we need to find someone who can.

When did he play?

I'm not doubting the guy you spoke with, but from what I have seen, the Buffs have more talent in the secondary than they have had in a long time. I can't speak to the physicality of practices, though.

I agree on his assessment that this is a make or break year for Hawk, too.

i remember some scout saying our secondary would be the worst in mac last year as well. i think we'll be alright.

Yeah, I'm really surprised to hear this as well. Jimmy Smith might be the best pro prospect on the entire team. Both Browns and Burney are very solid as well. Safeties are a bit young, but Greg Brown and Ambrose have raved about them. I trust those two know what they're talking about.

If I'm ever in a fight, I want Perkins and Mahnke on my side. Those dudes hit hard. I love having safeties like that. It makes other teams account for them. The middle of the field becomes a very dangerous place.

lot of good points, may not be the most "talented" back field....but a very aggresive and physical back field.........GO BUFFS!!!!!!

It wouldn't surprise me if practices are 'less intense' - at least this season. The injuries last year were brutal, so coaches may be taking it a bit easier.

i've always heard taking it easier on the field gets you injured a lot faster. who knows, either way, ten and no.
