First Reggie Bush is paid off and the NCAA turns a blind eye....now further proof of their coaches paying off players a la OJ mayo.

As swift as the NCAA came down upon the Buffs I don't know how things like this are brushed aside @ USC....If no harsh violations come from this there is something definately fishy abrewing in the NCAA (as if we didn't already know that )

$$$$$ ****ing bull****.

For some reason I immediately thought of the movie Blue Chips when I read this. They'll get away with it somehow, they always do.

they got away with it up until now, HOPEFULLY. seriously, if nothing program-damning and shattering comes from this...well, i just dont know anymore.

Easy

One team resides in a major market with big money donors, excellent tradition and high ratings when they are on tv. It's not in the best interests of the NCAA to come down hard on that team

The other team doesn't have any of those amenities but has enough of a name that even when minor wrongdoing or simple negligence occurs the NCAA can pounce on said team and use them as an example of how the NCAA stays on top of big time programs......

Exactly. Myles Brand is probably already trying to smooch U$C's fanny to make sure the money boys in SoCal aren't upset. The NCAA has no credibility. OU buying cars for players, slap on the wrist. U$C, buy a house for Bush, pay off OJ Mayo, slap on the wrist. Feed a hungry guy, here are the ton of bricks CU... You get the picture.

you kids aren't machiavellian enough.

if you are usc and your super-elite football program might have some ncaa problems and you also have a mediocre basketball progam, which do you offer as a sacrifice to the powers-that-be?

go ahead, ncaa, throw the bb program into the briar patch. it will be a feel-good story about how no one is immune from the rules. but, the whole reggie bush thing will get swept right under the rug and the football program will keep on going, without losing a step.

quid-pro-quo, clarice. quid pro quo!!!

Not to pour too much cold water on this, but $1000 doesn't seem like enough to get a guy to go to your school, if he can be bought. And this accusation is being made by a pretty sleazy guy, too.

And if USC's boosters are buying players, why on earth would they have their head coach be the bagman? Does that make any sense? Not to me.

And Reggie Bush was paid by an agent, to become a client, not a USC booster. USC might have to forfeit games, as he lost his eligibility once he took money from an agent, but USC isn't going to lose scholarships, because its not a recruiting violation. Lack of Institutional Control would only come into play if it were boosters paying Reggie to come to USC in the first place.

But even if USC were paying players, which wouldn't surprise me in the least, the NCAA would indeed look the other way. I doubt they are checking too closely who owns the condos USC players live in, or what the "rent" is, for example. That's where USC is buying players, not bags of petty cash to "friends of the family."

I found that odd as well. A coach would have to be a complete sleeze or totally stooooopid to pay a player. Boosters, on the other hand.....

I believe the schools are required to explain the rules & regs to the players. However, if a school or one of the staff has any knowledge of player/agent involvement, it would be a different story. This may be what the ncaa is trying to dig up .

Yeah, if the school knew Reggie was being paid by an agent, then its different. You could plausibly say that USC arranged for an "agent" to pay Reggie to keep the school in the clear (after all, this "agent" never represented anybody, and now he's been banned by the NFLPA, i think), and the NCAA can pretty much arbitrarily say, "you broke the rules, even if the rules say you didn't break the rules."

But all that's going to happen is that they give back the heisman and "forfeit" some games. JMO.

anyone who is being critcal of this right now is a case study of instantaneous NOT being fast enough.

The NCAA takes YEARS to come to a decision. They will not get off for the Bush violation and they certainly will not get off for this.

Have some patience. It took the NCAA several years to issue CU their penalties.

I'm tending to agree with you. They take a long damned time on these matters. Also, I do not buy for one second the assertion above that if the school didn't know he had an agent, then they are off the hook. Especially since his parents of very limited means lived in an $800,000 house and flew to every game. Pretty selective "vision" by the school staff, I'd say. Not only that, a couple of players lived with Leinert for free, which is a violation. I agree, Philly, they will end up paying some sort of price for this.

Nobody said they are off the hook. But there is a difference between playing an ineligible player and recruiting violations. If USC's boosters didn't pay off Reggie, then no probation, no loss of scholarships, no nothing. Just "forfeiting" some games for playing an ineligible player.

We shall see. If you are right and that is all they get, then I'll be ****ing pissed!

I don't blame you. There have been rumors of USC players living in pretty nice condos owned by USC alums for years, and the NCAA pretty much ignores it and doesn't investigate (and they aren't investigating that stuff even now). At the same time, they take a couple of scholarships from us for letting walk-ons eat at the training table. I was just drawing the distinction between the Reggie Bush situation and cheating by USC alumni. The NCAA is perfectly willing to investigate stuff that can't really hurt USC, so they look like they are doing their jobs.
