20 years ago today was an important day for the University of Colorado, and played a role in springboarding the Buffs to the top of the Big 8.

Anybody know what happened?

My guess would be Hagan committed to CU, but I'm pretty sure he committed in 1988.

Sal diagnosed with cancer? the '89 season, in which he passed, was dedicated to him and inspired the run to the Orange Bowl.

Barry Switzer left Oklahoma.

That and OU was hit with sanctions that rocked them throughout the 90s. They got caught cheating and actually served a severe punishment, unlike the slap on the wrist they'd get today. Those were the days...

This was my guess too.

That's what came to my mind also. I don't recall exactly when he was diagnosed, I just know it was sometime between the end of the '88 and the start of the '89 season.

I didn't even think of Switzer resigning, but I remember them being on probation and the OU game wasn't even on TV that year.

It was not Sal, because that happened in April of '89 right before the spring game. That spring game the team didicated the '89 season to Sal and Sal gave an emotional speech at the game. It was not Sal, I can tell you that.

The loss of scholarships, not being able to be on TV and bowl games hurt... but they dealt with that same **** from when Chuck Fairbanks was coach and OU even won a MNC under Switzer while on probabtion in the mid 70's and the next year when they werent (74 & 75)

I would say it was more because interim school president, an AD that was really wasnt able to be an AD due to the interim school president and the fact that Gary Gibbs and his inability to recruit and have a coaching staff like Barry, the hiring of Howard the Drunk for a year, and then John Blake, who could recruit somewhat but was a terrible head coach, way in over his head.

What pulled OU out of the 90's was they were able to bring David Boren from the US senate to be school president... lured an up and coming AD from Mizzou, Joe Castilogne, and the hiring of Bob Stoops, with the help of the former OU player and alum Eddie Crowder before the Iowa Hawkeyes could move on him.

Along with the hiring of Capel and Coale helped OU's Joe Castilogne be named AD of the year for 2008....
