Recruiting Injured Players

Can't recall his name, but I know we're recruiting some line man from Tenessee with known knee problems. We've also recruited Jarden who was injured his senior year. We all know the history of Mariner. Why is CU going after players with such problematic medical histories? Is the payoff any good?

  • Jarrod committed before he was injured.

  • A boatload of other programs also went after MTM hard. I was pretty surprised he came to CU.These kids are athletes who are going to get injured. In Max's case, blowing out his knee may have hurt his recruiting. But most "recruiting experts" say Max would've been a five star kid if he didn't get injured. I'll take a chance on a kid like that any day.

  • The payoff is good. Ask this kid.

  • Aren't bullet points cool? :smile2:

Rodney was injured, but managed to do well last season, before another injury (caused by someone this time). It's the nature of the game and football players are still football players. I don't mind taking a risk on a lot of these guys when we have depth and allow them more time to heal and rest up.

That's why I like the idea of MTM taking a couple of years off.

With head done and now tuioti, that depth at guard isn't so great. Quality depth that is.

MTM choose CU partly because his Uncle was the legendary and late Sal!!!!
Some of these injuries are a good risk.

CU appears to no longer be recruiting the kid from TN. I read some time ago he hadn't heard from CU in several months. I.E. post Jeff Grimes.

Sports medicine is pretty amazing compared to when I was a kid. MTM would have just been done in HS.

Sometimes a kid with injuries, particularly if it means they didn't play much senior year, is a real sleeper. CU hopes to nab some guys with huge upside that others schools have cooled on.

Others in this category (and you can decide for yourself if these are great "gets" or not after this season or next when we've seen them play healthy):

Jameson Davis, had knee surgeries prior to coming to CU (I'm putting two and two together, since this year was reportedly his fifth surgery, he had to have the others before he played for the buffs.)

Forrest West, had a great sophomore year, then tore pectoral muscle, and fell off the radar ... except CU's.

There are a couple others in the 09 class, but names are escaping me now.

And how many kids don't get injured at some point in high school now? With the weight lifting programs starting earlier and earlier, high school football is getting more and more physical. I'm not sure how you expect to recruit a full class of pristine kids anyway.

MTM, Davis, Ussery, Darden, West, etc., etc. We're going after players with injury histories because we're not in a position to win most recruiting battles and land the kids with equivalent talent who don't have injury histories. So we're taking a chance on kids with injuries (and great athletes but late bloomers who started football late such as Deji and Thornton) and getting 4* talent into the program that happen to be rated 2* or 3*.

Sounds arrogant, but when do you suppose we will get a point where we don't have to settle on such gambles?

I don't think we are settling, I think Hawkins believes in finding the player that have been overlooked for various reasons. Finding and polishing a jewel in the rough is very satisfying as a coach, certainly as satisfying as convincing a top player with many offers to come to CU. We've done both.

When we win, we will simply have more options, but I bet Hawkins continues to look for the player who is an outlier and doesn't fit the standard mold, as well as the multi-starred guys everyone else is after.

I don't think recruiting players for the primary reason that no one else is as a position that any team hopes to find themselves in. It certainly isn't something that can be spun as a positive sign for your program.
