so, we've got a little over a week to go... i am sure some others have been listening to hawkins' post practice audio and all that... he sounds confident but surly.

i think he knows for sure that the bloom is off the rose in terms of expectations but i think he feels like they have a good chance to be good this year.

it is interesting to contrast the wide open funk in the trunk voodoo hawk of a couple years ago with the monosyllabic hawk of today.

all that said, i couldn't care less if he is pumping sunshine provided they win on the field. this is a really big year for the program. another losing season and thinks are going to be very grim, no matter how you slice it.

i think there are lots of reasons to be optimistic. there is more depth than we've seen in the last few seasons. and, there are far more legit big 12 players at more positions than there were 3 years ago. we still have some gaps, of course. but the talent level is way up, imho. the experience level, across the board, still isn't what you would want, but it is improving.

i really like what kiesau has been saying about the offense too--- hopefully it translates from words to deeds. the o-line, while young, looks potentially very good. and the backs, of course, also look very good. that screams for a power running game.

i honestly think this team wins at least 7 games minimum, barring disaster. i think 8 is very possible. 9 or 10 is not impossible. in terms of setting the table and such, i think 8+ will be necessary for a decent recruiting year. and it can't be an ugly 8 wins... the offense needs to look like a machine and the defense needs to look aggressive. players will come to a pro-set offense if they think it is going to be effective.

just over a week to go until the lambs get crushed. they need to just stick to the basics. CU should own the LOS against the sheep. run the ball down their freaking throats. and, then when they are sucking for air and beaten down, go right over the top of the defense for the dagger strike.

GO BUFFS!

Good **** Liver:thumbsup:

I believe the Buffs can have a great season and finally play the kind of consistent football we've all been clamoring for for the last 6 + years.

:iagree:

I love the sound of the new plan for the offense. I think if this OL is as good as it looks on paper, and with these RBs, this team should be a force on the ground. I expect 8 wins, 7 minimum if that's the case.

That said, in the past under Hawkins/Helfrich CUs offensive staff has shown the attention span of a tweaked out crackhead at a laser light show. At some point they've always given in to the temptation to drag out every bit of **** from the bottom of the playbook. I really believe that was the Helfrich influence at work and that Kiesau will make a big difference in that department. But if that isn't the case, my expectations for the season definitely get lower.

Can I nominate this sentence for some kind of award? :rofl2:

I liked Kiesau's assessment in some article this summer talking about previous years they spent trying whatever anyone else was doing rather than finding and focusing on their strengths. It wasn't even so much trying everything in our playbook, but watching too much film of other teams and trying whatever they did regardless of our capabilities.

Love the return to smashmouth and I don't think most Big 12 teams are ready for it.

there was a good kiesau interview earlier in the summer and he talked about that. he pointed to the lack of offensive identity and also said that they did too much tweaking from week to week in reaction to the opponent's perceived weaknesses. he basically said all the right things. i think there is a question about whether he will be a good playcaller--- he's not done it before, especially at this level. but, he certainly said the right things.

This. I'd rather have the opposing team's game plan revolve around ours than us around their's. Getting an established identity will boost our season's expectations.

I hope that you are right...this time of year hope springs eternal in football fans.

I want to see the Buffs play like a well-oiled machine and also play with a high level of intensity over and entire game. Too many times in the past the Buffs have played well but only in spurts and have not maintained over the course of an entire game or season.

Keys to the season in my mind.
- Better QB play. There are going to be times in every game that the QB has to make a play, in the last few years it has not happened enough. The best teams have QBs that make those plays more often than not. I believe this area will have more to do with CU success than anything else.

- Offensive line. Everyone seems euphoric over the Oline but it is also a very young line, 2 of the starters have never taken a snap at the college level - they also have a new coach. This unit has to a least be solid, quality depth is an issue.

- WR, if Simmons and Simas can come through this area should be okay but CU needs more playmaking out of the wr position.

- Offensive coaching - Two years ago I said the Buffs lacked an offensive identity and people on this board jumped down my throat now the offensive coordinator says it. CU has to find the things they can do well and build an offensive philosophy from there.

- Defensive line - we all know this area is a big question mark, we will see how it plays out. The defensive staff has to find a way to put pressure on opposing QBs, something CU has not been good at lately.

- I think the LBs and DBs will be fine, inexperience at Safety will cause some issues at times but I believe the talent is there.

-Special teams - This area has a lot of concern in my mind. CU has to do better here, ST are a third of the game and in a close contest can make the difference. Losing Josh Smith will hurt a little bit here but the coverage teams and place kicking is a bigger concern to me.

Color me cautiously hopeful. There are a lot of questions on this team and they are lucky the schedule is not too bad for them. Yes, I am one of the ones who has been very critical of Hawkins. I want him to show that he is the coach to return CU to elite status.

We're in very good shape to have success this year and we have the mindset, depth, and talent to grow on that success in subsequent years.

I'm going to love this offense (provided it is smashmouth). Finally, a scheme that fits the personnel, as opposed to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole (trying to make Cody a spread QB, running out of shotgun w/ power backs, etc, spead offense w/ no WR talent). The spread mentality in the Big 12 will make us a tough matchup for certain teams' defenses on certain weeks. I see injuries as the only potential derailment of an 8-10 win season.

I'm so damn friggin excited I want to pop the first Rammie fan I see.

This scares the everliving crap out of me. We need the ST to be good special, not short bus special.

Cool pic where can I find that?

Let's not misunderestimate the bad influence of the departed Mr Grimes on "Star Wars" Helfrich and the O-line as a whole. Grimes was all technique, reading and fancy footwork, rather than smashmouth. Other teams' defense knew more about CU's blocking schemes than our O-linemen did! :wow:

Young (read: physically immature), injury-riddled and inexperienced, many admitted they were confused by what the basic Grimes Safety-Dance entailed: Step back, read, react, but do it with refined technique there MISTER! That let the D get a running start and penetrate way too easily against our over-thinking rookies, on their way to pressuring over-thinking QBs!

Offense lives and dies with the O-line.....a crappy o-line and Bradford, McCoy and Zac Robinson are only mediocre to decent QBs! (We'll see just how good Bradford is with his re-vamped and undermanned---only 12 schollie bodies!---O-line this year.) We finally have the talent and some depth there, as well as a coach who believes the first step his charges take should be forward! You'd like more experience, but that only comes with lapse of time---there's no waiver wire in the Big 12!

The improvement of the O line, together with disappearance of the confusing, "me-too" offensive coordination, is gonna be the best thing about this team. It will even make the WRs look better.

I'm ready! I'm feeling it! We need to start off by beating the ever living piss out of the sheep. We need to make a statement from the opening gun! GO BUFFS!!
