Or rather, they're turning Rodriguez in.

ESPN is reporting that several current and ex-Michigan players have gone to the Detroit press under condition of anonymity to lay out how Rodriguez is requiring them to practice much more than the NCAA allows as a maximum. Also, that members of staff supervised the "voluntary" 7ons over the summer.

This is going to cause a huge stink. Michigan doesn't tolerate NCAA violations and was about as clean as a program gets under Carr.

I saw that. I'm wondering if it is a case of players you wouldn't want in the program because they don't want to put in the voluntary time to compete, or if there is some meat to this. If coaches were running summer voluntary workouts, that seems to be a pretty big violation in my book.

Sounds like a case of "voluntary" workouts that are in essence mandatory. I would think that this is a fairly common practice among many I-A programs. :huh:

College football has become a year-around occupation for the players and yes the "voluntary" workouts are mandatory if a kid wants to keep his standing on the team.

That said there are rules in place by the NCAA around summer activities as well as in season practice time. No coaches are allowed at the summer practices, only an athletic trainer, and no filming of the practice may be done. Most schools have a small group of players who are put in charge of organizing and coordinating the activities. Some schools will "coincidentally" have an assistant or more in an office that overlooks the practice field "unintentionally watching" and giving feedback. Some other schools are very carefull about this even having coaches walk longer distances to avoid contact with the practice fields.

There are lots of fine hairs to be split about what is permitted and what is not but it sounds like Rodriguez has stepped way over the line of the rules. We are not talking about a Rick Neuheisel interpretation like calling from across the street but a flat out violation. Practice hours in season is the same thing. It is defined by the NCAA, schools may stretch things a little this way or that but from the reports RichRod went way past what can be explained by a little error in interpretation.

The question now is what happens. Michigan has been fairly clean in the past and as a big name school can probably look forward to favorable treatment from the NCAA under their "punishment depends on who you are" policies demonstrated by their unwillingness to do anything with U$C and some other big money schools while hammering some smaller programs with lesser violations.
 
This will divide the team in the short term, and de-focus them at a critical time, if nothing else. The prior coach was real popular with the players and RichRod walked into some issues here. Sounds a bit familiar to me....

If by "clean", you don't count forcing players to major in "athletic track academics", taking classes such as "Football Theory", "Exercise" and "History of Sports".....Don't believe me? Read what Jim Harbaugh former UM QB/Stanford HC said about that little secret.

UM and tehO$U have played that players' track crap for years on end! Remember when an Ohio St. RB ran afoul of his coachs when he wanted to take pre-med classes and they said "No"!

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of hypocrites! M go blow!

Not when they were taught by teachers who were...uh, shall we say of "limited" academic expertise/experience....such as the UM head and asst coachs?:wow:

Bo was full professor at UM and his upper-level class consisted of story-telling and anecdotes, most having been told to the players about a thousand time before!:lol: Like taking a class in your family's history taught by your boring great uncle Jake, droning over the same stuff you heard him tell you last Thanksgiving!

Since I knew someone recruited by UM last year, I followed them for a bit. (He didn't end up there, luckily.) I don't know which of these were starters last year (some left before season even began), but that program has had an exodus of sorts since RR arrived.
Here's a short list (there are more):

In addition to Toney Clemmons to CU,
Justin Boren to OSU within months of RR's arrival.
QB Ryan Mallet to Arkansas.
QB Justin Feagin dismissed from team by RR (notable because he was recruited by RR after Ryan left.)
LB Taylor Hill left team. (Rich Rodriguez recruit - went to Pittsburgh?)
RB Mike Cox threatened to leave, but changed his mind - for now.
RB Sam McGuffie to Rice.
WR Mario Manningham (drafted by NFL)


Typical fan response?

But again, it's not dissimilar from our own staff change in 2006. I actually like RR, and I don't hate Michigan, so I wish him luck. I think his deal has been raw enough already.

Actually, Toney Clemmons has said very little and nothing negative about UM and his experience there. He is lauded as one former player they think has a lot of class in the way he handled his transfer.

Former Michigan wide receiver Toney Clemons told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday night that all of the allegations reported are accurate.

"The allegations are true," Clemons said. "Nothing is fabricated or exaggerated in that story. I was there on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. or 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. depending on if guys needed treatment. You were there daylight to nighttime."

Clemons has since transferred to Colorado.

Another tidbit I'd like to quote from the link above.

"On Sunday, it was lifting, film, dinner and practice," Clemons told Schad. "I usually got out around 10:20. I truly don't want to be associated with the program back there. But I am going to help benefit my teammates back there by speaking and giving testimony."

I seem to recall his stats were miserable, he couldn't have been a starter!

He didn't gripe about being a starter, it was more like this:

Clemons, who signed to play under the previous coach, Lloyd Carr, said he didn't fit in new coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense. The sophomore spent the rest of the season assessing whether his role would change and finally realized it wouldn't.

"I knew that I wasn't the prototype in the system playing inside at the slot position in the coaching staff's eyes, and I also knew that I personally didn't like the role that the outside wide receivers played in the offense," Clemons said.

All this because the AD didn't have his cell phone with him when he went sailing, and therefore couldn't speak with Les Miles before LSU got to Miles with keys to the castle and the treasury!

Although I think Rich Rod is in trouble up there, this is not that big of a deal and I'm sure it happens at every other school in the country.. Coaches find out who's working in the summer, who's committed to the program, who's putting in extra work, etc.. Its not required to spend extra time, but its "expected" work the coaches want the players to put in. ..


And as Coach Hawk would say..... ITS DIVISION ONE FOOTBALL...

I went to one of the Michigan sites where - surprisingly - I still have access.

Suffice it to say, the article in the Free Press is a main topic of conversation - I lost count at 15 or so threads on it.

Highlights:

1. One guy thinks all the fans from his site should wear tshirts to the first game that say:
I am VOLUNTARILY here 6 hours before game time!
(okay, that was sort of funny.)

2. They are "just saying" that if they ever play Colorado in a bowl game, Toney Clemmons better watch out. (Said by fans, not players.) Note: some folks expressed disbelief they'd ever play Colorado in a bowl game in the near future because they are deluded into believing that their 3-9 record was a fluke and they are playing for the NC this year.
One poster went as far to say if they played Colorado in a bowl game, he'd be disappointed because he expects they will do better than that this year. Sigh.

3. Most take the party line that the whole story is made up by people (i.e. the media) who don't like UM. These people are convinced that Rich Rod can do no wrong, and would NEVER ask his guys to work a minute overtime.

4. To explain the quotes by current and former players, it's all players who "couldn't cut it" or who bore a grudge.

5. Pretty much did not see a single post saying "what if these guys are telling the truth, or even partial truth?" There was zero support for any players who blew the whistle, even those still on the team. I find that kind of disturbing, but I've seen CU fans do it to CU players, so nothing new there.
 
So it sounds as though Michigan fans are exactly like all other fans.

Any threads over there on CU/CSU at Invesco?
