I don't think we could afford Shanny...isn't he making like $2mil this year to do NOTHING except not talk $h*t about the Broncos?? (who are a complete train wreck for the first time in my life)
I see Wade Phillips getting RUN the F*** out of Dallas after a sub-par year this year and Jerry Jones bringing Shanny in at $3-4 mil a year.
But hey, who knows, like NashBuf said, maybe he'd stay in CO to enjoy the ridiculous house he just built.

Mike Shanahan would never, ever work for a guy like Jerry Jones.
But as much as I'd love to see Shanahan coach the Buffs,(although I'm expecting Hawkins to be here for a long time), there is no way we could afford him.

Exactly. Not sure he's that interested in the college game anyway after the success he's had in the NFL.
Top 10 recruiting class the first year, CU lands a bluechip QB, we get tons of national media attention, and CU wins a bunch of games. Shanny's the type of coach that returns you to national relevance before he coaches a game.

Once Elway retired, how many play-off wins did "the Mastermind" have???
And how many busts of expensive free agents, including busts of the rotten character kind did he have? Just what we need, a repeat of 2004!
Beating up on weak Western Conf. foes and winning just enough other games to show a winning record doesn't cut it at his level. We'll see if his rep holds at his next job; I'm not so sure and I'm not certain he could build a program in a place like Boulder. Alabama, FLA, yeah, sure, but Boulder?
And as long as he wasn't directly related to the Broncos, there's nothing which would draw those pro football slugs/fans up from Denver, just to see Shanny. Mac's great teams couldn't fill Folsom consistently, what makes you think a Shanahan in exile would?

Dream on! I've met him a couple of times, he's a decent guy, but I haven't been impressed with his body of work since Big John left.
Plus you Bronco fans hugely overestimate his star power outside the Front Range. Look at what Weiss did with a couple of Super Bowl Rings and a ton of pub at the most renowned program in the country...Pfffft! Been to NYC, Boston and Seattle among sports fans and these days, its "Mike Who?" That's national relevance?

Yeah, that stung. Kubiak would have been a great fit here, in my opinion.
I think Shanahan would be a great college coach, but the last few years have me doubting his ability to judge talent, and more importantly, character.
Considering Mike makes $7 mill a year doing nothing what would he want to coach teh Buffs? $8 mill?

It isn't going to happen, but I don't think these coaches are looking for the deal that gets them the most money. I mean Shanny is set for life. Hawk is here, but Shanny is one of the few I would trade him for right now if he truly wanted to coach college football and intended to do so for at least a half dozen or more years.

Shanny was great....10 years ago. i think he's an NFL guy who could make it work at the college level (unlike Callahan or Greg Robinson). but, really, Bronco fans misplaced the love for a half-dozen years with Mike. telling themselves they were "still one of the best teams in the AFC" while winning 9 games a year. writing was on the wall with Shanny for a long time.
The problem wasn't Shanahan the coach, it was Shanahan the GM.
It won't happen until Shanny's contract with the Broncos runs out. I don't think that happens for another 3-4 years at the earliest. Having said that, I wouldn't be opposed to the idea if it were ever to come to pass. You'd have to think that Shanny would enjoy the idea of continuing to coach in the area, still be interviewed as a head coach in Colorado, getting press, etc. At the point where he'd be coming here, he'd be a very wealthy man anyway, so I doubt money would be much of an issue.

He sure as hell elevated their program back to relevance and recruited a hell of a lot of good players, despite their on-field struggles.
If you don't think Shanahan being hired as HC would immediately pay huge dividends I don't know what to tell you. This isn't the 90s anymore. CU is barely a blip on the radar screen of cfb fans who who live outside the states of Colorado and perhaps Nebraska.
Shanahan is also significantly more recognizable a figure than Weiss ever has been. Weiss was not a HC in the NFL.
Shanny is making ~$7 million a year to do nothing right now. His next coaching gig will likely pay him in that same ballpark.

I don't think there are many PRO organizations out there that would pay $7mil + for Shanny outside of Dallas and...wait for it...Chicago with a Jay Cutler reunion!!

What's the common theme here: 8 out of 10 schools are getting mega-millions every year for playing in BCS bowl games each season which obviously greatly offsets these huge salaries AND makes it way easier to recruit top talent.
If Shanny is making $7mil now to do nothing, he'd want at least that to actually coach - how would CU or any other non-powerhouse (sorry, I just had to accept CU is no longer a powerhouse) pay nearly twice what schools like USC & Florida are paying? I think he stays in the NFL.
But IF he did decide to take a major pay cut to stay in Denver and commute to Boulder to take over the Buffs, I think it'd be a media frenzy, bringing major attention to the school & program. BUT as some people have mentioned, I don't think he's a very motivating or exciting guy who would get a blue-chip prospect as excited about CU as Pete Carroll does for USC or Saban does for 'Bama.

Players know that Shanny can coach offensive football. At the college level, his weaknesses on the defense might be covered up.
Shanny's biggest problem when he was the HC in Denver wasn't necessarily game-day coaching. When he set his mind to preparation for an opponent, he was usually pretty good. His problem was drafting and personnel decisions.
He could recruit on name recognition alone for a few years. If he didn't get any success, that name recognition would start to work against him. I don't think he'd be a failure at the college level, though.
Again, he won't make the move until his sweetheart deal with Bowlen runs out. At that point, assuming he's sold his house, he'll be a very wealthy man regardless. He won't need to make $7MM/Yr. I suspect he'd be perfectly satisfied making 1/4 of that so long as he's in a spot where he feels comfortable.

Depends on if his new house is paid off, or if he has a big ole loan on it, IMO.
The new house he just built is 35,000 sf. Figure $550-600 psf for building costs, and that's roughly $20 million before you factor in land costs, architect's fees, furniture, landscaping, designers, etc. He's into that house for $25-30 million. And he still owns his old house, too (the one on the market for $17mm)
His financial situation might dictate that he needs to make $5 million plus just to make ends meet.
Or he might have no debt and be in a completely different situation. But I could see a situation where he would need to work to make the big bucks.
