As bad as we have been in the last four years (dead ****ing last in the conference). i think the D has kept us in games vs. the "Boise Playbook" horseshot we were sold.

Eric Kiesau - Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks Coach
- Very good recruiter. Jury's still out as OC and QC. Team seemed to improve from game 1 to game 2, but still only scored 3 first half points against Toledo. Cody doesn't look any better so far.

Darian Hagan - Running Backs and Returners Coach
- Very good recruiter. Mixed bag with the position coaching and personnel groups. Returners have been inconsistent. Good job with his guys avoiding turnovers.

Dan Hawkins - Wide Receivers Coach
- Excellent recruiter. Wide Receivers seem to be playing pretty well. Very questionable that the best players are playing. Lots of dropped passes but hard to tell whether that's talent or coaching.

Denver Johnson - Offensive Line Coach
- Jury's still out on recruiting. Run blocking and pass blocking both looked better in game 2. Disappointing performances in both games, though.

Kent Riddle - Special Teams Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach
- Above average recruiter. Special teams have been awful until this year. His history as a ST coach was good, though, and we seem to be better this year with the improved team depth. He might be ok here. Tight ends have been dropping passes and getting penalized when blocking. Veteran group so this shouldn't be happening. Fail so far as a TE coach.

DEFENSIVE STAFF

Ron Collins - Defensive Coordinator
- Zero recruiting. Has had some good performances as a DC (notably TTU, OU and Miami-OH). But overall the defenses have been rated among the worst in D-1 football and there have been performances (notably MU games, first 2 games this year) that scream "Fail".

Greg Brown - Defensive Backs Coach
- Average recruiter. He's pulled in some guys but he's hit or miss on recruiting (a couple DBs look like wasted scholarships). As a DB coach, he's earned accolades in the NFL and developed some players at CU from very raw recruits into stars. Seems to be a better CB coach than safety coach. Last year's secondary far outperformed expectations, but this year's has been a liability when it should have been a strength.

Brian Cabral - Inside Linebackers Coach
- Very good recruiter. He'll always ensure we get a long look from Polynesian prospects. Widely regarded as one of the top 5 LB position coaches working in college football. This year, however, our ILBs have given us very little pass rush when blitzing, have often been a liability in coverage, and simply aren't making a lot of tackles. How much of that is a defensive line that gets no pressure on pass plays and gets pushed back on running plays, I don't know. He's got the bona fides, so I give Cabral the benefit of the doubt and point the blame elsewhere.

Bob Foster - Outside Linebackers Coach
- Zero recruiting. His resume says that he knows how to coach linebackers and coordinate a defense. It's hard to see where he's helped with either. Collins looks like an even worse coordinator this year and the OLBs (Beatty & Rippy) looked better in the spring and seem to have regressed under him. Fail.

Romeo Bandison - Defensive Line Coach
- Ineffective recruiting. He has been responsible for a grand total of 0 defensive line commitments in 4 years. As a position coach, it's hard to say that Hypolite, Nicholas or Lucas improved under his tutelage. Backups didn't get game experience last year and this year we are inexperienced, lacking depth, and completely overmatched. D-linemen seem to catch blocks and don't show a wide variety of moves. Lack of stunting/twists/etc., but not sure whether that's on Bandison's coaching or Collins' coordination. Fail.

Edited.

C - Outstanding recruiter. Did a decent job as WR coach considering what he had to work with. As OC has produced two totally different game plans. CSU was a disaster. Toledo was a decent plan until the defense collapsed, but still didn't produce first half points (only 3). Can only hope he is trending upward in the OC role.

Darian Hagan - Running Backs and Returners Coach

D+ D Scott finally got to show that he is a big time back. The fact that he has spent so much time watching from the bench because he can't pass block, etc. speaks in part to his position coach. The need to rely on Sumler because the other backs don't know the offense, don't know all the facets of their position, etc. fall on the position coach. I'm not sold on Hagan.

Dan Hawkins - Wide Receivers Coach

D- - As HC or WR coach he is making the calls on who gets playing time. This puts Dustin Ebner and Jason Espinoza supplanting Andre Simmons and Will Jefferson on the field squarely on his shoulders. His coaching at the position basically gets an INC two games in and without Simas seeing the field yet, but his management of the talent is pretty indefensible.

Denver Johnson - Offensive Line Coach

D - The talent is there and healthy this year, granted they are still fairly young. They've been horribly ineffective at times, scheme issues seem obvious. It's early and maybe he'll bring this grade up, but for now his results are not good.

Kent Riddle - Special Teams Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach

D+ - Special teams have been atrocious in the past, but this year there is progress. KO returns have given good field position, Goodman has been a totally different kicker, kick coverage has been good, DiLallo has looked decent. Punt returns were bad against CSU and nonexistent against Toledo. His past failures hurt his grade here. As TE coach he, along with Hagan, are blessed with the best and deepest talent on the offense. Hands and blocking have been below their capability.

DEFENSIVE STAFF

Ron Collins - Defensive Coordinator

D- - Something in his scheme screams "beat us deep" apparently. CSU came out attacking deep immediately with an untested QB. Toledo made our D look silly in the first half. Something Collins is doing is being easily exploited. I was hopeful he had made good halftime adjustments against CSU, it appears CSU actually just took their foot off the gas....

Greg Brown - Defensive Backs Coach

C- Secondary has talent, especially at corner. Guys keep getting caught flat footed and either allowing catches by covered receivers or allowing guys to run right by them with the ball. Not sure what is up with that. But he has done it in the past, gets some benefit of the doubt.

Brian Cabral - Inside Linebackers Coach

B - This guy can coach and recruit. Apparently he can't turn Smart into a cover corner or Sipili into Alfred Williams, but that may be more on the scheme than Cabral. Plus, his Buff credentials get him the benefit of the doubt...

Bob Foster - Outside Linebackers Coach

INC - Mostly because I have no idea how to grade him. What is his job? Is he a position coach? A backup plan for Collins? A support system for Hawk?? At this point the play of the OLB has got to owe as much to previous coaches (Collins, Cabral?) as to Foster. And frankly I think the OLB have played OK, but certainly not above their talent level (we've got good talent there...)

Romeo Bandison - Defensive Line Coach[/QUOTE]

F+ - Players don't develop. Hell, not many players even sign on the DL. Can't recruit, coaching successes are a SHORT list. The + is because Abe Wright had a nice season once. So Romeo has that going for him, which is nice...

I'll rank them from whose unit is showing the best results two games in to who's not cutting it at all for me.
