Bohn Quote of Interest

“We maybe have been guilty of building a façade that maybe didn't reveal the hole that we were in and the severity of the situation we were in associated with the program,” Bohn said.

Now is this just his way of dodging a bullet? Sounds very much like one of those excuses Dan Hawkins told us all about in his 10 wins or no excuses speech.

The more I read that quote the more I think it's an excuse for the Athletic Department more than the Head Coach. jmho.

yes, that hole was sure severe. ... played for the b12 championship 4 of the previous 5 years and won it once.

yep, damn that was a big hole compared to what we've seen the last 3 years and 2 games.

this annoys me.

The first step to recovery is acknowledging there is a problem. I appriciate Bohn's latent self-awareness.

Bohn has done an admirable job setting the table for Hawkin's success over the past four years. He has worked his marketing magic to get people to forget the pseudo-scandal and get people back into Folsom. He did his part to generate interest in the program.

But the product on the field didn't match the marketing. It has been all sizzle, and no steak.

If Bohn has a fatal flaw, it's focusing in on the "business stuff" while giving Dan Hawkins unchecked trust and authority to run the football program.

As fans, we are duped because we bought into the marketing, hook line and sinker. We were sold on tradition and progress. But when it comes to game day, the fans and the viewing public have been served up two nationally televised examples of bad football in the same week.

Any restaurant owner knows that customer loyalty starts in the kitchen. A terrible meal in a fancy dining room won't win you many customers. Leftover hamburger helper served up on a silver plate is still hamburger helper.

To shift metaphores to the movie business, Bohn has just produced and released the NCAA equivalent of Ishtar or Gigli. It's not enough to have a nationwide release. The movie has to be good, too. CSU is sitting on Slumdog Millionaire. CU fans are walking out of the theatre.

It will be hard for Bohn to trick the fan base twice. Getting his message into allignment with his product is critical for his success.

I couldn't agree more with you on this! Even after 70-3 I wasn't down on GB as much as most I guess. Yes it was embarrassing but at least we were in the game and then bowling.

And yes the facts are the facts and we were in the Big 12 CG 4 of 5 years. Can't really ask for a whole lot more in my opinion.

So he's saying he and hawk are LIARS and we shouldn't trust them? 10 wins, "passion to win".
Nobody trusts these two anymore,me thinks the players don't either.

True, but that was a pretty pathetic North division which we won in 2005 with a 4-4 conference record. Winning that was like being the valedictorian at summer school.

Barnett did leave a cupboard that was depleted but not completely bare.

I don't buy Bohn's excuse.

What i've seen these last 2 games isn't a talent issue, it's a coaching issue.

Leaving a steak on the grill for an extra ten minutes doesn't make it a better steak. Drop the hammer now!!!

But damn I would love a 4-4 Big 12 record now. Almost seems like a pipe dream, 4 big 12 wins for this team??

Most often, any façade a person has taken the trouble to erect is meant to be the thing to be looked at while hiding something rather mundane or even unsavory behind it. People do it all the time, daily as a matter of fact. Just listen to a politician or attorney then wait as the facts begin to unravel.

But to come out like that and actually say it publicly, to point at the façade and start people to thinking about that fact, is brutal honesty in my opinion. This guy has taken the first critical step in solving the problem(s) facing the program, again, imo.

Next step is to highlight those issues which he defines as "the hole that we were in" and "the severity of the situation."

I started a tread based on this quote yesterday as well. This shows only half of his statment and I find it insulting.

Classic fanny covering. Are you telling me four recruiting classes couldn't cure the problem? Four classes and you can't assemble a team that can compete, not beat, just compete, with MAC and MWC teams? If you can't you need to go.

The thing that pisses me off to no end about the bare cupboard talent excuse is that we are talking about CSU and Toledo.

Colorado State University and Toledo University.

If Hawkins really can't assemble more talent in four recruiting classes than these two scrub teams can put on the field, that alone is justification for him to be relieved of his duties.

How do the Hawkins supporters think this team is going to look like in a few years when the 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes are the juniors and seniors on the team and the players from his one good recruiting class, 2008, are gone? Do you think we are going to be top 10? Top 25? Do you think we will even go .500?

Mike Bohn really has gotten us past the recruiting scandals so that's a huge positive. He got a basketball operations center built and is in the process of securing the $$$ for the basketball practice facility which would be a huge step forward for the basketball programs.

I wouldn't give Bohn the ax just yet.

Bohn has done a great job with the other programs. BBall, Golf has a new home course. The athletic department as a whole has been run great. I just hope that he doesn't get sunk because of Hawkins.

He basically just said he was lying to everybody to give us warm fuzzies...makes HIM look stupid now.

That was my point earlier. If he's now saying that maybe they put up a facade to hide how bad things were before, what is supposed to make us think they aren't doing exactly the same thing now?

Is anybody entertaining the notion that the man might have been expressing a bit of honesty and wants to fix things?

It's been mentioned here that he's a good AD overall, elevating other CU sports just fine.

Certainly you can't be referring to either of the basketball programs.

The fact is, whether fair or not, there are exactly two sports that people care about and CU looks to be in the absolute basement in both of them.

Had he not extended Hawk before he had a winning season with a ridiculous buyout number, he'd be in far less trouble because of Hawk.

Because of that extension, we're effectively stuck with a coach that has not yet figured out how to win games in big boy football. The AD cannot afford to buy him out unless boosters dig deep and donate the money.

Win games in big boy football?

This guy can't even beat non-BCS schools on any kind of consistent basis.

Ok, what about the other notion: that the quote attributed to him that this thread was started about is an honest expression of concern and that he wants to fix things in the football program?

I don't have a problem with Bohn.

He hired guys with high character and a history of winning for both football and basketball. Then, he supported them with the administration and with boosters, marketed the hell out of their programs, and got out of the way on personnel and coaching issues. I can't critique him on his hiring, because I have to admit that I would have made the same exact choices at the time of the respective hires.

:yeahthat;

I will concede that Hawkins certainly appeared to be a fantastic hire at the time of his hiring. I thought we were on our way to seeing top 10 teams in a matter of a few years. This expectation was fueled in part by comments from the AD regarding "national championship within 3 years". I certainly didn't expect that to come true, but I expected the team to be very good by year 3. Certainly I expected in year 4 that we would be looking at 10+ wins.
